Indians draft infielder convicted of burglary

Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins!

The Indians selected an infielder Thursday in the baseball draft who was kicked off his college team for stealing electronics from a dorm room.

Lonnie Chisenhall pleaded guilty to burglary and grand larceny and was sentenced in February to six months’ probation. Chisenhall and a former South Carolina teammate were arrested in March 2007 for stealing a flat-screen TV and a PlayStation 3 system from a resident advisor’s dorm room.

Indians scouting director Brad Grant said the club did extensive background checks on Chisenhall, who was selected with the 29th overall pick.

``Everybody we have talked with is convinced that Lonnie’s incident was a case of him being at the wrong place at the wrong time and it will not happen again,’’ Grant said.

Well, duh. He's going to be able to afford his own PS3.

I guess when they say he's a threat to steal, they'll mean something else.

Stealing from an RA's room?

Ballsy. Stupid, but ballsy.

"damn, how'd I get in my RA's dorm room--I seem to be the wrong place at the wrong time!"

*RA knocks on Lonnie Chisenhall's door and he opens*

RA: "Hey Lonnie, i'm trying to find my flat-screen TV and PS3. Do you know anything abo--Hey, what's that stuff behind you? a new TV and PS3?"

Lonnie: "Yeah, I got it for a good price. It was a steal"

RA: "Wait, your TV has my stickers on it"

Lonnie: "Oh ####!"

Yeah, he just accidentally stole that Playstation 3 and flat-screen TV. In fact, he didn't even steal it - it just fell into his pocket, and he didn't notice when he left the room. Really, the quote should read "... at the wrong place at the wrong time, doing the wrong thing..."

While he may never do something like this again, to pretend that it's just a trivial matter is insulting.\

As a side note, do any of the lawyers here have a guess as to how this would impact his ability to play in Canada - either in the minors or majors? I mean, I know that various athletes have been convicted and still been allowed across the border, but that's largely been for DUI/DWI, drugs, or assorted traffic violations - grand larceny and burglary are viewed with a slightly different level of seriousness.

This guy has nothing on Ron LeFlore.

I also remember in the late 1970s that announcer would make a big deal about Jim Norris having been signed out of prison. I don't know what he was there for, and in any case there is not much to discuss about Jim Norris, a generic non-descript outfielder.

As Kevin sort of alluded to above, Clay Buchholz got busted at McNeese State for breaking into a school and stealing and reselling ~30 laptops, and he was able to pitch in Toronto last season.

I hear he refuse to sign any of the laptops at card shows, though.

I see. I don't remember hearing about that one.

It just stuns me that people could be so stupid to think that no one would notice that:
a) They seem to have acquired a Playstation 3 and flat-screen TV at the same time that one of each just vanished from down the hall, or
b) They suddenly have exactly the same number of laptops that vanished from the school just down the street.

I suppose I should be happy that so many criminals are that stupid....
