Indians get three-time All-Star Josh Donaldson in trade with Jays

Would that I could be as optimistic as Chris Antonetti seems to be…..

The Toronto Blue Jays on Friday traded third baseman Josh Donaldson to the Cleveland Indians, who are hoping the 2015 American League MVP can bolster their lineup and help them get back to the World Series.

The Blue Jays will receive a player to be named later.

“This is one of the most dynamic players in the game on both sides of the ball when he’s healthy,’’ Indians president Chris Antonetti said late Friday night. “We think there’s an opportunity for him to get to a point this month where he’ll be playing in games regularly and has a chance to impact us in the postseason.”

Seems like a smart bet - probably won’t work but if it does.....

There probably isn't a major player that I have less certainty of performance on than Donaldson. I wouldn't be surprised if he comes out and plays like an All-Star. Also wouldn't be surprised if he's complete toast.

I've heard elsewhere that the PTBNL will vary depending on how much Donaldson plays...

I guess the Jays figured this was preferable to a qualifying offer (or had decided that they simply weren't going to offer one).

If he doesn't get at least $50M contract, Jays get only a third rounder. Unless he shows he is fully recovered from the injury, chances are he would have taken $18M, tried to get in form in 2019 and be FA without QO afterwards.

Babe Ruth is the greatest hitter in the game when he is not dead.

So the Jays certified him "healthy" for the purposes of clearing waivers, the Indians claim him, then put him back on the Disabled List because he's not quite ready for prime time. Is this what is called gaming the system??

paul hoynes @hoynsie
Josh Donaldson just hit grand slam on his rehab for Class AAA Columbus.

Sounds career-ending.

You can't go on a rehab assignment if you're not on the DL.

And I don’t think you can be traded while you are on the DL (though they may have changed that rule). In this case it’s hard to think the Indians were getting screwed here. It’s not like they weren’t aware that he’s missed the majority of the season.

If the playing time is the determining factor on the return I wonder if post-season counts. The Indians have the central wrapped up. They could just use him for a few games at the end of the season to make sure he’s ready to go.

That's not the case.

The player is a person on the Indians 40-man roster that didn't clear waivers. Both sides have said (through the media) that it's a specific player, and almost all indications are that it is Merryweather.

He's done this before.

He came back from his original shoulder injury this season and everyone realized he still couldn't throw the ball. He also had two previous attempts to come off the DL for this calf injury, and re-injured it in the final stages of rehab.

Besides, hitting home runs is the easiest way to avoid running full tilt...

Merryweather seems to be confirmed. I understand that Donaldson is very risky, but that seems worse that offering a qualifying offer.

The DL restrictions on trading players are likely to prevent teams from stacking their 25-man roster by having other teams trade them disabled (or more likely, "disabled") players. Because Donaldson was taken off the disabled list, he had to take a space on the 25-man roster of the Blue Jays, which required them to make a space for him. If he was still on the DL, then they wouldn't have needed any space on the 25-man to make the trade. I think that is the gaming the system that the rule is designed to prevent.
