Got to love me some Rajai Davis, I guess.

I just love the fact the Mets are forced by cruel circumstance to bat .211-hitting Todd Frazier 3rd.

Rajai Davis's current OPS+ (not his OPS) is 1202. (For comparison, Cody Bellinger's is only 230).

They're only doing that to get under Adam Eaton's (thin) skin.

Speed on the basepaths, as Wilson Ramos leads off the Mets' 2nd with a base knock.

Some stats that will make Mets' fans morning.

In 12 games against the Nationals' pen:

The Mets have scored 37 runs (36 earned) on 46 hits in 35.2 innings.

Sean Doolittle vs. the Mets: 5.1 IP, 10 H, 6 ER

The Nats have blown 5 saves vs. the Mets.

The rest of MLB has 3 vs. Mets

Jacob Resnick @Jacob_Resnick
17.1% of the Mets’ total runs have come against the Nationals’ bullpen.

There aren't a lot of times when I can honestly say, "I can do better than that major league player," but I could honestly say that right there.
   22. Bote Man Posted: May 23, 2019 at 01:47 PM (#5845004)
The Nats should be put in a clinic--on baserunning.
   23. Howie Menckel Posted: May 23, 2019 at 01:48 PM (#5845005)
I just love the fact the Mets are forced by cruel circumstance to bat .211-hitting Todd Frazier 3rd.

well, he was 7 for his last 17 and got a hit his first time up and then got a walk.

not too late to get back on the TFraz bandwagon!

Nats have 10 hits and two walks in 6 innings - and on top of that, they even scored a run!
   24. Howie Menckel Posted: May 23, 2019 at 02:18 PM (#5845016)
Aaron Altherr, recently DFA'd by the Phillies, joined the pitiful Giants outfield.

he batted once, struck out - and the Giants were so impressed that they DFA'd him, too.

well, AA is now a Met.

Bases loaded, 2 strikes, Urshela lays off a borderline sucker pitch and then laces a 2 run single. 3-1 Yanks. Bundy looked great through 5, but that 3rd time through the lineup did him in.
   26. JJ1986 Posted: May 23, 2019 at 02:26 PM (#5845032)
Davey Martinez very mildly badgering the umpire until he gets run and then half-heatedly throwing a tantrum.
   27. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: May 23, 2019 at 02:29 PM (#5845034)
You could say that the Nats are a little bit frustrated, eh?
   28. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 23, 2019 at 02:29 PM (#5845035)
Lester is not sharp so far. He'll have games where he's bad in the first and then figures it out, and games where he just stays bad.
   29. Howie Menckel Posted: May 23, 2019 at 02:31 PM (#5845037)
Howie Kendrick ejected for arguing over a check-swing strikeout - well, mainly asking why the home plate ump didn't check with the ump at first base.

then Nats manager Davey Martinez - in what appeared to be the first phase of his exit interview - gets tossed as well.

the good news is that he showed flawless form in tossing his hat to the ground and getting it to bounce up. I mean, it could be part of an instructional video on how to do it properly - that's how good it was.

his dirt-kicking didn't awaken memories of Lou Piniella, though.

and speaking of DFA'd Giants OFs, there's Gerardo Parra with a 2-out, 2-run single to give the Nats the lead in the 8th.
   30. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 23, 2019 at 02:34 PM (#5845038)
Oof, really bad passed ball there by Contreras. Doesn't look like the signs were mixed up, he just tried to backhand a low and outside (not in the dirt) pitch and missed it.
   31. Banta Posted: May 23, 2019 at 02:39 PM (#5845045)
This is a joke. Diaz should have been in this Mets game. Gsellman, pshaw. He's like Aaron Heilman but less accomplished.

Callaway doesn't have the managerial sense about him. This game is important.
   32. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: May 23, 2019 at 02:40 PM (#5845046)
The Nats are trying desperately to give the Mets the sweep...apparently, the Mets don't want it.
   33. Dog on the sidewalk Posted: May 23, 2019 at 02:43 PM (#5845048)
Callaway is not good at bullpen.
   34. Banta Posted: May 23, 2019 at 02:44 PM (#5845051)
Well, Dom Smith Magic before I could even predict it.
   35. Dog on the sidewalk Posted: May 23, 2019 at 02:48 PM (#5845055)
Great to see Diaz warming up to protect that 1 run deficit.
   36. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: May 23, 2019 at 02:49 PM (#5845056)
With Alonso up, it might not be a deficit for very much longer.
   37. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: May 23, 2019 at 02:51 PM (#5845058)
Or maybe it might.
   38. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 23, 2019 at 02:52 PM (#5845060)
Lester will probably be lucky to make it 5 innings today. 47 pitches thru 2.

   40. Banta Posted: May 23, 2019 at 02:53 PM (#5845063)

The Mets might have never had him when he was good but I'll take that.

I now see Callaway's genius here. Give up the lead to completely demoralize the Nationals when you come back yet again. He's actually a cruel, calculating man.

About the Nationals' bullpen: Flirting with history, as @PaulHembo notes:
Worst ERAs in the modern era (since 1920)
1. 1930 Phillies 8.03
2. 2019 Nationals 6.89
3. 1936 Browns 6.88
4. 1950 Browns 6.81
5. 1936 Philly Athletics 6.61
6. 1930 Pirates 6.53
7. 1929 Phillies 6.43

Heyward isn't good enough to be getting picked off first base.

Another inning or two from Lester and it's not going to matter.
   50. Howie Menckel Posted: May 23, 2019 at 03:16 PM (#5845087)
per post 45

1930, of course, was the historic NL season when the LEAGUE hit .303. the Giants hit .319, led by Bill Terry's .401. if you hit .350, you didn't even make the top 10. but a 4.22 ERA was good for 10th place. Carl Hubbell was second at 3.87 (to Dazzy Vance's dazzling 2.61 at age 39. he went 17-15).

the Phillies' overall ERA was 6.71, and only Phil Collins (insert music joke here), had an ERA+ above sea level - 114 off a 4.78 ERA. Phil went 16-11, the rest of the Phils went 36-91.

#Nationals this season in games started by Max Scherzer

Max Scherzer: 3.41 ERA, 71.1 IP, 68 Hits, 27 ER, 16 BB, 96 K, 6 HR
Nationals bullpen: 13.14 ERA, 24.2 IP, 39 Hits, 36 ER, 20 BB, 24 K, 10 HR

The current crop of Nationals beat writers are a gift:

Barry Svrluga @barrysvrluga
Man, both these teams are terrible.

Jesse Dougherty @dougherty_jesse
Gerardo Parra singles up the middle and the Nationals now lead 4-3. Take them off the brink, at least for a moment.

Jamal Collier @JamalCollier
Gerardo Parra pinch-hit, two-run single puts the Nats ahead 4-3. Maybe Davey should just get ejected everyday.

Jesse Dougherty @dougherty_jesse
Here comes Wander Suero for the eighth. The Nationals have a one-run lead and, dare I say, they need this one.

Sam Fortier @Sam4TR
Gerardo Parra is the life raft of this Nationals season.

Jesse Dougherty @dougherty_jesse
Carlos Gomez hits a three-run home run off of Wander Suero and the Nationals trail 6-4 after climbing all the way back.
Unbelievable.

Jamal Collier @JamalCollier
I…I don't even know what to say.

Brittany Ghiroli @Britt_Ghiroli
This team just cannot win. Unreal.

Sam Fortier @Sam4TR
What is an antonym for "life raft"?

Noah Frank @NoahFrankWTOP
OK, but if the Nats single-handedly revive the careers of both Rajai Davis and Carlos Gomez in the same series, it'll be the most impressive thing I've seen this year.

Dan Steinberg @dcsportsbog
Looks like the Nats are 12 games under .500 for the first time since the last day of the 2010 season.

Brittany Ghiroli @Britt_Ghiroli
The Nationals have 31 losses, which is as many as the Marlins.
This was a team people picked to win the World Series, swept in a four-game series against the Mets.

Noah Frank @NoahFrankWTOP
Max Scherzer allowed 118 earned runs in 421.1 innings between 2017-2018.
The Nats bullpen has allowed 115 earned runs in 147.1 innings this year.

I'm watching and not listening, but I think that the Cubs may have been screwed out of a run. I think Heyward beat Rodriguez to the bag (the one angle from CF sure looked clear to me), but then he overran it so Rizzo's run should count and Heyward is still the 3rd out. Cubs challenged and lost.
   66. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 23, 2019 at 05:11 PM (#5845141)
This game isn't over. But that run, and the unearned ones from earlier might haunt the Cubs here.

Just tuning in from Portland, Maine. Is Joe OOGYing Ryan again? And why the hell didn’t Caratini go to the bag at third?
   72. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 23, 2019 at 05:37 PM (#5845149)
Heyward just looked like a little leaguer in CF. Oof.

The bench has been emptied, guys are all over the place, and this bullpen can't get outs.
   73. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 23, 2019 at 05:38 PM (#5845150)
No, Ryan is pitching himself off the team. He's been bad for a bit now - he's had his chances.
   74. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 23, 2019 at 05:38 PM (#5845151)
Kind of Ryan to make that lost challenge irrelevant
   75. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 23, 2019 at 05:39 PM (#5845152)
The strike zone has also magically gotten smaller this inning - it had been a big zone all game.
   76. Brian C Posted: May 23, 2019 at 05:39 PM (#5845153)
And why the hell didn’t Caratini go to the bag at third?

Because he rightfully wanted the double play, and didn't have time to go to the bag and then throw to first?

I mean, obviously if he knew he was going to make a bad throw to 2B, he should have gone to the bag at third.

   77. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 23, 2019 at 05:40 PM (#5845154)
If the Cubs can store about 10 runs this inning, they might be able to pull this one out.
