Ingredients for winning require rare mix

TAMPA, Fla.—He’s a man defined by the rings he’s won in October. But the quality that really separates Derek Jeter from the masses is the unstoppable force that drives him from April to September.

We know it as energy. But it’s more. Or focus. But it’s more. Relentless concentration. But it’s more. What Jeter really has is an ignition with no “off” switch.

Derek Jeter doesn’t believe in taking plays off or not giving a full effort—“I’m not one who believes you can turn on and off a mindset,” he says.
It’s there in his first at-bat on Opening Day. It’s there in the ninth inning of Game 162. And it’s always pumping—every day, every inning, every pitch in between.

—-this article is a big “Winners” thing.  The problem that is never addressed by things like this,  is it never mentions players who are leaders on losing teams.  Doesn’t anyone think Brian Giles didn’t have it,  or Jim Thome?
They just never got their World Series rings.  Annoying.

@2: Simply hilarious.

Let it please end the thread.

we spoke with three players who exude the kind of hyper-energy we're talking about -- Jeter, Chase Utley and Johnny Damon

The same Johnny Damon who showed to camp in 2007 overweight and burnt out? The one who thought about quitting Baseball?

Maybe the writer meant Johnny Jeter.

TAMPA, Fla. -- He's a man defined by that porn stache he never should have shaved off. But the quality that really separates Jayson Stark from the masses is the unstoppable force that drives him from Spring Training until whenever he stops writing.

We know it as the second person plural. But it's more. Or the "royal we." But it's more. Relentless disregard for grammatical convention. But it's more. What Jayson Stark has is REALLY ####### ANNOYING.

Jeter struck out in the top of the sixth inning of Game 162 last year and was replaced by Jerry Hairston in the bottom half. Even on the bench in a meaningless game, "it" was still there for the last three innings.

A rare mix of things that includes the highest paid group of teammates in professional sports history, but Jeter's drive and leadership are undoubtedly the most important ingredient.

BTW, I agree about Stark. Shaving that stache aged him 10 years.
