Inside Baseball | Picking Jake Arrieta’s New Team

The Wizard doesn’t want you looking behind the curtain.

Anyway, Boras sees analytics as a management excuse to keep salaries down. He says Hosmer brought that same kind of “prestige,” meaning championships, leadership and intangibles. In his way of figuring, Arrieta beats Darvish badly in what Boras calls “prestige” value.

Arrieta has Cy Young votes three of the last four years (Darvish hasn’t had Cy Young votes since 2013), and he won one Cy Young, in 2015. He beats good teams, and he beats them often in the playoffs (his 3.08 lifetime postseason ERA is much better than Darvish’s 5.81).

“Analytical evaluation is incomplete,” Boras said. “It needs to include prestige, the human element, a leadership dynamic. It also needs to include postseason performance. Analytics are void of that.”

Unless of course, your client does not have "prestige", in which case hard analytics trump all and intangibles (such as prestige) are meaningless. Really, Boras just has highly refined legal skills; you argue to your strengths and diminish the importance of your weaknesses. There is nothing wrong with that, just as there is nothing wrong with an owner/GM ignoring the noise as well.

Isn't this the same guy that brings huge portfolios/binders full of stats to contract negotiation meetings?

Those aren't analytics, though. Those are stats that say things like the only pitchers in MLB history with exactly 432 walks, more than 1300 strikeouts, at least one 20-win season, a full manly beard, a World Series ring, and a dog named Chester were Jake Arrieta and Walter Johnson. Therefore Jake Arrieta is basically Walter Johnson and should get paid like the greatest pitcher in baseball history.

Actually, I believe Walter Johnson's dog was named ChesterFIELD. Sorry, but I couldn't let that slide.

I'll take, "Crap a Desperate Boras Says" for $1000, Alex.

I'm sure if Jake would announce that he'd play for Walter Johnson's 1924 salary he'd have plenty of teams in the bidding.

Cherry-picking! Johnson got a 66% raise in the 1924-25 offseason despite turning 37. And if we adjust for inflation, Johnson's 1925 salary would be worth $28 M today (give or take a magnitude of 100).

Also Johnson never won a Cy Young ... he'd probably have felt insulted if he had. You really want a guy like that on your team? No prestige value whatsoever.

Johnson also never had a beard at all, let alone anything comparable to Arrieta's. Although I know for a fact that Jake styles his beard extra-bushily for games, I would assume for intimidation purposes. He and his wife came into the bar where I play guitar one Friday night this past summer, and he had it much more combed down.

Was it still prestigious?

Why did they call it the Cy Young award instead of the Walter Johnson award? Because it rolled off the tongue better?
Cy Young was just a compiler (just kidding) and he wasn't even elected to the HOF on the first ballot (just kidding, I know why he wasn't).

Arrieta to the Brewers for like 4/90 seems like the no-brainer of the off-season.

Hell yeah. It projected a quiet confidence- 'In a regular social setting, I don't need to be super bushy to be awesome.'
