Instead of waiting for the real Chris Sale, maybe we should redefine what that means

We’ve recycled the phrase since his first start, but it has grown as stale as his fastball. Perhaps it’s time to stop waiting for “the real Chris Sale.”

Maybe we’re looking at him.

On Sunday, Sale delivered another flawed outing in a 5-2 loss to the Rays that dropped the Red Sox to 11-17 and Sale to 0-5. He probably deserved slightly better—he limited Tampa to four hits and two earned runs while striking out eight over seven innings—but let’s not get carried away. He pitched well enough to take a no-decision instead of another L.

As far as avant-garde plays about current members of the Red Sox go, Waiting For The Real Chris Sale doesn’t hold a candle to either Six Players In Search Of The Injury List or The Hirsute Closer.

I was at the game yesterday, and Sale really didn't look right. Fastball was 89-92 MPH, pretty much no changeup, relying heavily on a slider that came in at 74-80 MPH. He got hit hard in the first couple of innings- Diaz absolutely teed off on both his double and triple- and walked three.

At the same time, he should have been out of the second without any damage. And he finished strong. I was shocked he came out for the 7th, but it was his best inning. 11 pitches, 1 K, no baserunners.

I think Sale may be at that stage of his career where he needs to adapt to not being the pitcher he was. While being almost completely opposite in body type I think CC Sabathia is a really good comp. CC was 32 when he had his first down year in 2013. I think Sale can adjust, he's a smart pitcher with great secondary stuff so I think/hope he will get there. The Sox as a team need to get it together. Sale's struggles wouldn't be so glaring if the rest of the team were performing to ability.

At 5 years and $145 million committed going forward (including this season), the Red Sox really need the old Chris Sale to be the real Chris Sale, and this new Chris Sale to be a blip on his way to a HOF berth. I do believe he is much better than this, but sitting at 20% of his season in the books (6 starts, on the way to 30 starts, or slightly more than his career average), he is at -0.3 WAR. Older guys need to hit or exceed their contract value in year 1 of a long term deal, and b]he will need to turn on the jets to get to his contract value, this year.

I actually meant #8, and I'd forgotten that they had 4 contestants on TTTT. Sorry for buzzing in early on that.

Which is not a TTTT thing, but whatever.
