International Baseball Update: Rosters for Baseball World Cup start arriving

The Baseball World Cup, the second most prestigious tournament in international baseball competition, will be later this year in Panama. Some (at least preliminary) rosters are starting to be released.

Japan’s is made up of players from the Industrial and College leagues. NPB players generally only play in the WBC, (formerly) the Olympics, and maybe the Asian Games.

Australia’s includes former big leaguers, and all of the roster has at least some professional experience, either in North America or in Australia’s new pro league.

While Team USA doesn’t have a full roster out yet, it has been confirmed that Cubs prospect Brett Jackson will be playing for Team USA in both the World Cup and the PanAm games.

Cuba released their preliminary roster (which will have cuts in it) a few weeks ago.

Really? Not that I pay that much attention, but I don't think I would have heard of this if it weren't for Gaming Boy. I'd have guessed:

1. Olympics
2. Little League World Series
3. WBC
4. Pan Am Games/other Continental/regional type tournaments
5. Other

Baseball's not in the Olympics anymore, bumping the Baseball World Cup up to fifth, behind the ones you mention and the Can-Am League playoffs.

Ah, that's right, not even the Olympics...

Considering Olympic baseball doesn't exist anymore, and Little league is played by 12 year olds, I'm going to have to side with Gamingboy.

SouthsideRyan basically gets it. Olympics no longer has baseball (Stupid Europeans), LLWS is 12-year-olds. Also, the LLWS isn't a national team competition, it's merely teams from neighborhoods around the world.

Baseball World Cup is basically, well, the World Cup of Baseball. However, it never has been able to get much traction because it never has had MLB players, and even the NPB doesn't really bother with it. And, for years, there weren't even any minor leaguers or anything, since it was technically an amateur event until near the turn of the 21st century. As a result, the Cubans dominated up until a few years ago, when the US started sending some higher-quality Minor Leaguers to it.
