The Free Hugs With Harold perk has moved from ESPN to MLB Network.

One of my friends took one of those jobs right out of college, and now he's built a very successful career for himself at ESPN.

Back when I was a TV sports producer, absolutely nothing made my life easier than having a really good intern. When we had a competent, reliable intern, we went out of our way to help him/her get a job after school.

90% of the time, the interns were trainwrecks who made our jobs harder than they already were. But the ones who are reliable, consistent, and talented - if we couldn't hire them, we did our best to get someone to do so.

Internships are valuable. It sucks to work for free, but people notice the good ones.

Careful. A while ago we had an internship thread and several primates basically equated the practice to slavery.

Why not? Literally all of what 3 just said would still be true if minimum wage was paid.

It's happening again!

Won't somebody please think of ESPN's shareholders?

My cheap-ass newspaper in Little Rock always paid our summer interns, presumably minimum wage, even back when it was really, scandalously cheap-ass. (The apparently cheaper-ass daily here in Montgomery, despite being bankrolled by Gannett, did not.)

My internships were always paid, and quite well at at that. Then again it was engineering stuff, and I guess that tends to be a bit differentthan other fields.
