THT: Is Clayton Kershaw Worth the Hype?

Breaking down the mechanics, injury risk, stuff, and numbers of Clayton Kershaw…

“Clayton Kershaw’s curveball scares children”

“Clayton Kershaw’s curveball is public enemy number one”

“Clayton Kershaw is straight filth”

Just a couple of the high heaps of praise that surround Dodgers pitching prospect Clayton Kershaw, known by many to be the best pitching prospect in all of baseball.

I suppose one is worthy of such praise when his curveball looks like this…

One thing that Alex sort of glosses over in the discussion of Kershaw's arm action is how Kershaw finishes his pitches. I think it warrants noting that his finish is absolutely outstanding; you won't see very many pitchers get through the release point and follow through as aggressively and cleanly as Kershaw does. Dodger fans should be very excited about this kid.

"Clayton Kershaw's curveball scares Troy Glaus."

That was a big league YELLOW HAMMAH he dropped on Glaus in the first inning tonight. Wow!

That was also a big league YELLOW HAMMAH that Pujols dropped into left field for an RBI double in the first. I know that you have to leave a curve belt high to get it called a strike these days, but he was throwing them belt high down the middle of the plate and he's going to occasionally pay for that.

Yes, he made some mistakes. Yes, he has room for improvement. But he's 20 years old. He's got all the tools to be a special pitcher at the highest level. And after giving up the double to Pujols, he did throw a number of curves outside the hitting zone. It's a wicked pitch, and it looked like he was varying the speed on it a bit as well. He was getting >20mph separation on his fastball versus his curve. That's very, very good.
