HOW WILL THE CARDINALS OR CUBS LOSE TODAY?!

Why is there one game today? Is it a makeup?
   3. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 19, 2018 at 02:01 PM (#5712630)
Hell yes it's worth an Omnichatter. It might be just cardsfanboy on the play-by-play and me on color commentary, but we'll have fun with it.

It's a new thing by MLB in response to people complaining about two days off after the All-Star game. It's essentially this week's "Sunday Night Baseball". It's supposedly written into the CBA that a team can't play in this game more than once every few (three?) years.

And it should happen every year, dammit.

Right, it's like a spotlight/national game, so it'll always be a game like this or Yanks/Red Sox.

Funny thing is the Cubs and Cards do have a makeup game on Saturday, meaning a DH and 5 games in 4 days. I know the Cubs complained a little about how this scheduling turned out, I bet the Cards probably did too.

I'll throw in a comment or two, possibly contrasting a move by Schild with how I imagine Matheny would have responded.

I am genuinely curious to see if he has a "style" that can be discerned over just a few games.

Even in his first game, he distinguished himself from Matheny in several ways -- the defense-first lineup; batting Yadi 2nd and Wong 6th; using Martinez as a pinch-hitter in the 4th inning ("Your spot may be in the 4th or 5th inning for your best pinch-hitter. Don't let it slide by."); not letting the injured Bader talk his way into staying in the game; pulling Mikolas after 4 struggling innings, short of what he needed for a win; letting the cruising Gant pitch 4 innings in relief. All very un-Matheny-like.

Edited to add the Mikolas bit.

sadly this game is on ESPN, I don't get to see the second day of the Shildt era.... The golden era of Cardinal baseball, where we get a combination of Herzog, TLR and Kissell all rolled into one.

Well, Pham got to *that* fastball ...
   11. salvomania Posted: July 19, 2018 at 07:42 PM (#5712789)
I think Pham's homer may have hit the facade of the building across the street on the fly...
   12. cardsfanboy Posted: July 19, 2018 at 07:51 PM (#5712797)
batting Yadi 2nd

Not sure it's a good thing to bat Yadier, a gidp machine, second, but he has started batting second 21 times in his career, of which 19 of them were with Matheny managing, and two of which were with Matheny managing this year. So what you meant to say, was he juggled the lineup a bit, which is of course something Matheny did a lot.

Wong 6th
Wong has batted 6th for Matheny 5 times this season and 48 times in his career, of course not really seeing the significance of that move as he has batted all over the order depending on how he has been playing, as his bat has been coming around for the past few weeks so he was going to be moving up the lineup soon no matter who was manager, as he has posted a .314/.379/.549/.928 since June 24th.

   13. cardsfanboy Posted: July 19, 2018 at 08:03 PM (#5712803)
letting the cruising Gant pitch 4 innings in relief.

unless there is something special about 4 ip over 3 ip, Matheny has allowed his reliever to pitch 3 or more innings 6 times this season alone, here are the NL teams that have fewer long relief appearances than the Cardinals, see if you notice a trend...

51-45 Rockies has done it 4 times.
48-48 Nationals also 4 times

55-43 Brewers 5 times
55-38 Cubs 6 times
53-43 Dodgers 6 times
53-42 Phillies 6 times.

I'm not sure why you would think that is a hallmark of a good manager, when the data shows it's not something that happens to good teams often.

One thing I hate about the ESPN broadcast, not only can I not watch the game, but they also don't upload videos to mlb.com of the highlights during the game. So a total blackout.
   16. Walt Davis Posted: July 19, 2018 at 08:07 PM (#5712810)
Geez, that took an embarrassingly long time for a producer to finally feed Olney the names of some Yanks' prospects that he should have known off the top of his head.

   18. cardsfanboy Posted: July 19, 2018 at 08:20 PM (#5712820)
Pham made a claim he wanted to be the first Cardinal to ever get 30/30, and the other teams know that he is going to try to stretch his luck. Heck I don't mind him failing with the pitcher up to bat.

You know it's possible that this is an extra inning game that goes past midnite right?
   20. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 19, 2018 at 08:25 PM (#5712828)
According to the centaur in the booth, Pham's pickoff "energizes" the entire Cubs team because it convinces them that the Cardinals don't really want or deserve to win the game.

Mm hm.
   21. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 19, 2018 at 08:26 PM (#5712830)
Ooh. Now the centaur is saying that Harper's HR Derby victory will have a "reverse effect" from the usual jinx, propelling him to an MVP-level second half.

I guess in his defense, he does have an unusually large ass to pull things out of.

All-Star Yadier Molina with a 3 hit night so far today(it's the 5th inning, still has a chance to get the triple and homerun for the cycle.)

Remember what I posted several days ago about Maddon having to use relievers in much higher leverage situations than desirable? Well, Duensing is warming up.

   28. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 19, 2018 at 08:49 PM (#5712846)
It's Maddon and Hendricks. A quick hook is if he pulls him halfway through warming up in the bullpen.

Was this an NBA game 6 final in which the team with only 2 wins got the call?

I mean I don't really expect any sport outside of the NBA and maybe world cup soccer, to have such blatant incompetence.

Am I missing some sarcasm? 113 pitches in 4 2/3 inning doesn't seem like a quick hook at all, if anything it's a delayed hook.

One of those 12 games will have a 26th player, so that should help a bit.
   32. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: July 19, 2018 at 08:52 PM (#5712852)
Hendricks has 110 pitches in less than 5 innings had given up 9 hits. He was very clearly out of gas.

I did click the link, I was making fun of how bad the call was, it is something you would expect in the NBA finals, it's such a blatant bad call, that even Shoeless Joe would think that it was corrupt.

Wow, there are a lot of players exhibiting humility these days, in the days of yore, few players not named Rose, were willing to jump around, nowadays every team has a few.

exact quote by A-Rod on Bryant (I have game on DVR): "He is the ideal Joe Maddon player - a superstar who is good enough to win an MVP and a World Series, but with an ego that can really float around anywhere [in the field]. I cannot tell you how many superstars would say, 'I am NEVER changing positions.'"

I was going to send A-Rod a gift basket, given that all 2,674 games in the field by Jeter were at SS.

then I realized that Jeter never won an MVP. so surely A-Rod is thinking of someone else.
:)

(and I'm not at all sure A-Rod was thinking about that. but too good to pass up)

They showed some stat earlier where he's either first in the NL or mlb in BA against fastballs. Might just be since he came off the DL.

ARod has been horrible tonight. I didn't even mention all the small-ball fellating, including praising Zobrist for doing "exactly what a cleanup hitter is supposed to do, playing small ball" in hitting a sac fly.

[72] Started the game late ... just reached that point of the broadcast ... had to rewind to listen to it again just to make sure I didn't mishear the madness.

That's as stupid as the article from the Trade Judge thread that's up right now.

Seriously ... the Yankees are going to trade Sanchez and roll with Romine and Higgy?

A little perspective from RAB:

Since Sanchez’s injury Austin Romine and Kyle Higashioka are a combined 13-for-70 (.186) with six walks (.250 OBP), and opponents have gone 18-for-21 stealing bases in 20 games

Yeah, that's going to happen.

I know Arod's gotten some praise for his panel work in the post season before, but as an in game analyst (or whatever the hell he's supposed to be)? He's ####### awful.

Yeah, that was bizarre, to the point where I was questioning what I saw. They were saying it was a perfect throw, and it looked to me like it was way to the OF side of the bag. I was wondering if I was crazy.

This is the kind of stuff I mean when I say that I usually think A-Rod is decent. He's a reasonably astute student of the game, and he throws out a lot of non-ridiculous comparisons like this. He just seems a little coked up tonight.

Still, Mendoza is literally telling him to dumb it down right now.

...and we're back to "batting average is more important than underlying metrics." Sigh.

Here's a serious question: does batting average gain importance relative to OBP in an environment where fewer balls are put in play? It seems like it ought to.

Schwarber would have had that...

Ha, was just thinking, "Zobrist just made the kind of play people imagine Schwarber making."

Yes, probably? But what they were saying is that BA is more important than exit velocity, which is pretty much the ultimate outcome-over-process fallacy.

Well, he's decent at the playing side of things. When he talks about hitting, fielding, some stategy and the like, well, he's talking from experience. It's absolutely everything else where he's gawdawful.

Yeah, don't misunderstand me, I'm not defending them (honestly I had tuned them out and missed what they said about BA in the first place). Just been thinking a lot the last couple years that BA has become underrated in general among stathead types.

Which in itself makes him a gigantic upgrade over most ex-player analysts who are incapable of saying anything that isn't a cliche they memorized from listening to coaches or reporters.
