   101. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 19, 2018 at 10:36 PM (#5712951)
Just been thinking a lot the last couple years that BA has become underrated in general among stathead types.
Sure. But thinking a little more about it, it would only be by a small margin - basically the difference in value between a walk and a single, no?

Oh, FFS. Now that it's a Save Situation, gotta make a pitching change for the last out. Managering.

ElRoy is exasperated by pitching change in 3...2...1...

ETA: I mean -1...-2...-3...

Nicely done

One step ahead of you, man.

Fowler tried.

Well, I don't know. But I thought all year last year that one of the Cubs' big problems last year with RISP was that they didn't have anyone who could hit for average. Like, walks are all well and good, but sometimes you just need a damn hit, you know?

Right, because a hit would advance runners more than a walk, maybe lead to an extra base on a bad throw, etc., which is the difference in value between a walk and a single. To the extent that BA is underrated, it would be in failing to distinguish from OBP.

Which in itself makes him a gigantic upgrade over most ex-player analysts who are incapable of saying anything that isn't a cliche they memorized from listening to coaches or reporters.

AJ Pierogi and David Cone on last weekend's Sunday night broadcast were a MUCH better (color) broadcast team* than what we're getting tonight.

* Never thought I'd say that about AJ, but he was surprising good (Cone I already know and like from YES broadcasts) and he and Coney just kept asking interesting, knowing questions of each other, from pitcher to catcher and the reverse.

[edit] It wasn't the Sunday night game, it was a few days before. Doh!

Happy 96th birthday to the glorious Rachel Robinson, Jackie's widow - and so much more.

it's a consolation that at least she has lived long enough to see even more progress.
I have met her a couple of times, and there is something about her - we used to call it "a state of grace."

a brilliant and successful woman in spite of the times (and she put Jackie in his place when necessary on that) - and if you have seen some of the documentaries, she remembers everything and handled the crap she got handed with plenty of dignity, too.

long may she reign. it's a good thing for younger people to realize that the woman who married Jackie even before he reached the majors in 1947 still walks among us (she and Jackie got married the same year as my parents did, and mine lived in Brooklyn). it's not THAT long ago.

Clint Frazier was removed from tonight's RailRiders game for precautionary reasons related to possible concussion symptoms. He'll see a doctor soon. RailRiders not yet sure whether a DL stint coming.
