How will the Mets lose -- to the Phillies, yet! -- today?

It can't be any worse than last night, right? RIGHT????

Watching Rod Carew's press conference for the American Heart Association - man, he looks great. Godspeed, and I hope he has a lot of time left to get people on the organ donor list and save lives.

In each of their last three games the Red Sox have allowed multiple runs in the first inning (3, 2, 2). They have won all three games. Anyone know how to look up how often that has happened?

HOW WILL C. B. BUCKNOR COST A TEAM THE GAME TONIGHT??

Sorry Jose, looking in PI, I don't see a way to do that type of search.

Thanks. I tried to figure that out too but no dice. I'm sure it exists but where I don't know. Oh well.

I seem to say this every omnichatter this year, but Jose Martinez just hits baseballs. I see his ML career average is only .457, but I'm not sure I've ever seen him go more than two consecutive at bats without a base hit.

I use splits to find team seasonal numbers, so I was hoping that would be a nice way to get around it, but since it's seasonal data, it didn't help out. And game finders, surprisingly doesn't have an option for centering on an inning specifically, if it did offer that one feature, then you could at least get the number of games won in the course of a season where a team allowed more than one run in the first inning, and from there you could manually try to figure that out, but it doesn't have an inning option.

I imagine inside of five years, that they will have that ability, it seems like something that people would ask about (how many games has my team allowed x amount of runs after a certain inning or something like that)
   9. salvomania Posted: April 19, 2017 at 02:23 PM (#5438259)
I see his ML career average is only .457, but I'm not sure I've ever seen him go more than two consecutive at bats without a base hit.

And with that single his career OBP is now over .500. I know it's only 39 plate appearances, but still, a line of .457/.513/.543 is impressive.

Now if he could only field his position.
   10. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 02:23 PM (#5438260)
Cardinal announcers are interviewing Scott Terry about a kids fantasy camp/clinic type of thing for kids, and he's talking about all the former major leaguers in the clinics.....and he's listing off their name "Danny Cox, Tom Lawless, he's out of baseball now so he enjoys doing this, McLellen...name, name........and Mike Crudale." (he must be at least a lurker here)

   11. salvomania Posted: April 19, 2017 at 02:27 PM (#5438264)
Hey, Dex Fowler with his first Cardinal home run. "Fowls" up 1-0 in the 3rd.
   12. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 02:27 PM (#5438265)
Fowler with his first Cardinal homerun, surprised no curtain call.

Cardinals-Pirates entering the fourth, on pace for another sub-2:30 game...
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 02:33 PM (#5438274)
I didn't realize until today that Nova had a complete game (78 pitches) .
   17. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 02:34 PM (#5438276)
It wouldn't be the Cardinals, if they didn't allow a run in the immediate half inning after scoring.
   18. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 02:44 PM (#5438284)
Now a walk for Martinez..... I'm just looking at this guy and for some reason thinking Edgar Martinez, obviously not as good, but a professional hitter, who just does what he can with the pitches he gets.
   19. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 02:47 PM (#5438292)
Jim Edmonds just said the most negative thing he's ever said about another player, as an announcer. (and it wasn't really that negative)

They are talking about the even keel nature of Dexter Fowler, and how his slow start hasn't changed him as a person, and Jim responded, "that even keel nature out of your superstars is important, I remember when I was in Milwaukee, and if Prince was not in a good mood, the rest of the team was skittish, if he was in a good mood, everyone was in a good mood."
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:00 PM (#5438299)
Fowler will definitely get a curtain call for that second homerun of the day. Although day crowds are often usually a bit more timid.
   21. salvomania Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:06 PM (#5438305)
Entering the sixth, on pace for a 2:24 game.

Curt Gowdy would never speak ill of a player while calling a game.

Curt Gowdy would never speak ill of a player while calling a game.

Jim Edmonds has been over the top positive...he claimed Votto was one of the best defensive first baseman he has ever seen.... From a guy who played on the same team as peak Albert Pujols, Adrian Gonzalez and Derek Lee.
   24. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:14 PM (#5438316)
Cubs game will start at 2:15, after a 55min rain delay. The temp has dropped like 20 degrees since this morning. What an odd spring we've had so far weather wise.
   25. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:20 PM (#5438320)
Pirates defense has no holes.
   26. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:21 PM (#5438321)
So the Brewers bats are impervious to weather. Who the #### would have guessed they'd be this super slugging team?

BTW, Thames looks like an absolute beast right now. He'll cool off, but it's kind of hard to picture what that'll look like since he's absolutely battered the Cubs so much.
   27. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:24 PM (#5438326)
Okay, this is a weird decision, but I'm assuming it's an tweaked issue, but Martinez was pinch ran for by Grichuk.. Yes Grichuk is a better runner and defender and not a bad hitter either, but it's only a 2-1 game and it's very probable that Martinez lineup spot will come up again, if the Pirates tie it up, and if so, then I would like to have Martinez in the game.

Only hitters on the Cardinals worth a crap right now is Martinez, Piscotty, Garcia and Gyorko...with Carpenter and Fowler looking better than their numbers appear, and Grichuk being a difference maker...but the only guy on the roster that I currently like seeing at the plate, is Martinez.
   28. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:25 PM (#5438329)
Is Kyle Hendricks Randy Wells now?
   29. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:27 PM (#5438334)
Martinez is just this year's Hazelbacker, down to the hot start (same age at the time), right?

   30. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:30 PM (#5438338)
Wait, both Bryant and Rizzo popped out on the first pitch?

The difference is that Martinez has hit(for average) throughout his career in the minors... Hazelbaker is a better overall player, (better defender by a significant amount) Martinez is not going to be the second coming of anyone, but he doesn't look too bad being compared to Ludwick, with a tad less power.

Mind you, hazelbaker had a 104 ops+ last year, and is starting strong in a bench role this year. Martinez is not going to be a rookie of the year candidate or anything like that, but if he puts up a 90 ops+ as a bench player everyone would be happy, if he puts up 110 it would make him one of the best bench bats in baseball.
   32. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:40 PM (#5438344)
Didn't Hendricks not allow a HR at Wrigley until like August last year?
   33. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:41 PM (#5438346)
After a two homerun game, Fowler has raised his season ops to .568.....
   34. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:52 PM (#5438353)
I know the Cardinals don't look like a contender right now, and I shouldn't care what other teams do, but of course I'm an optimist, and I'm hoping the Reds and the Brewers keep playing well enough to think that they are contenders, and beating teams that they shouldn't beat. I think at the end of the season it's going to look very much like what pre-season picked, and with the loss of Marte for 80 games, it's very unlikely the Pirates will be a surprise team either.

So go Brewers, beat the Cubs... (again I don't actually care about the standings at this time of year, but I want my team to win as much as possible and hope the other contender doesn't win many)

Defense has killed us....
   37. salvomania Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:57 PM (#5438359)
Cardinals' defense has really sucked in 2017.
   38. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:58 PM (#5438360)
I will say this, it's one of the few times I'm going to pick on Matheny, but he should have double switched Diaz for Garcia last inning.
   39. salvomania Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:58 PM (#5438362)
They seem to have a lot of trouble with grounders toward first base.
   40. salvomania Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:59 PM (#5438364)
According to Gameday Bell's fly out was to the wall in left---a three-run jack after two errors woulda been a killer.
   41. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 03:59 PM (#5438365)
It was about 10 feet short of the warning track, it had no chance of going out.

edit:maybe 15-20 feet short, Grichuk basically took three steps back. (and it had a low arc, the big deal was it could have advanced the runner because Grichuk was moving back when he caught it)
   42. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 04:02 PM (#5438367)
We needed CB Bucknor on that pitch.... walked the bases loaded...
   43. salvomania Posted: April 19, 2017 at 04:03 PM (#5438370)
That's nine walks in five innings for Siegrist. To be fair, one of them was intentional.
   44. salvomania Posted: April 19, 2017 at 04:04 PM (#5438371)
I'm not sure Siegrist is the guy I'd want pitching with the bases loaded and a one-run lead...
   45. salvomania Posted: April 19, 2017 at 04:06 PM (#5438373)
My god have the Cardinals relievers been dodging some bullets the last couple days...

If this holds it will be back-to-back-to-back games with a final score of 2-1.

Rescheduled as 17Jun D/N doubleheader, per Twins official twitter
   47. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 04:19 PM (#5438386)
Cardinals luckily got out of a jam of their own making.
   48. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 04:20 PM (#5438387)
I read an article by an idiot on Redbird Rant(yes I know they are all idiots) but anyway, he literally made the claim that the Cardinals won the first game of this series against the Pirates because of Mozeliak, who basically came into the locker room and said nothing, yet this idiot gave him credit for benching Peralta, Yadier and ending the Adams in the outfield situation....

I just hate all the Cardinal blogs, the average iq for those sites have to be below which ever political party you hate average voter. We got beat the first two games and won the games. You can't claim credit for luck. We got lucky these first two games. This is the only game where we were playing better than the opposition, even with the mistakes.

As a Blues fan, I have seen people talking about how the Blues are going to kick ass because of the first three games.....umm in the first three games there were 10 periods, in those 10 periods, the Blues got their ass handed to them in 7 of them, they might have actually won 1 period, and the other two are toss ups... the fact that the Blues are up 3-0 isn't a testament to their quality, it's a testament to their luck, and Jake Allen being godlike right now.

The point is, you can't brag when you were beat and managed to win anyway.
   49. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 04:22 PM (#5438388)

Funny thing is that this season feels like almost every game has been a one run game, but when I looked it up yesterday that wasn't the case , only 6 games---3-3---have been one run games, yet it feels like there was more, but that is because almost every game was close going into the 7th inning or later, no matter what the final score ended up being.
   50. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 04:27 PM (#5438393)
Nice sweep for the Cardinals.
   51. salvomania Posted: April 19, 2017 at 04:27 PM (#5438394)
Not bad, a three-game sweep after getting swept by the Yankees, all 2-1 games, average length 2:29.
   52. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: April 19, 2017 at 04:28 PM (#5438395)
The "everything's for sale" attitude of the Cubs is really getting disgusting - they now have a local attorney reading the "this telecast is copyrighted and may not be rebroadcast etc." disclaimer, with his ad afterward. That's right - the disclaimer is sponsored.
   53. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2017 at 04:41 PM (#5438407)
I asked before, but how much of that is the Cubs and how much is The Score?
   54. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: April 19, 2017 at 04:46 PM (#5438411)
This is on WGN (I'm working from home today), but since the Cubs own the rights to the TV and radio broadcasts, I would think they are the only ones allowed to sell advertising during the broadcasts themselves. Might be different between innings. At least that makes sense in my head, anyway. Plus, it fits with what the Cubs are doing with Wrigley - every inch of that place has been sold, and they're always trying to find ways to squeeze more out of it. Even the replay reviews are sponsored, and there are ads touting the "bathrooms of the future" designed by the official water efficiency partner of the Cubs.
   55. Man o' Schwar Posted: April 19, 2017 at 04:46 PM (#5438413)

Umm... go Cubs.

I think there is going to be a honeymoon period where the owners can get away with this, but I'm fairly confident that at some point there will be enough backlash to reign it in a bit....not a lot, but a bit.
   57. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2017 at 05:02 PM (#5438427)

A few days ago I looked at the Cardinals rank in runs allowed and runs scored and in one category in the NL they were 2nd from the bottom and the other the bottom.... I think that now they are probably at the bottom of the league in scoring, but runs allowed has probably moved closer to middle of the pack. (just looking at bb-ref and that isn't quite the case, but heck we are moving)

Maybe I'm too easily placated, but short of having a Marlins-like fire sale, the Cubs have enough slack with me for quite a while to do as they please.
   59. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2017 at 05:19 PM (#5438440)
Same. I don't care about those ads at all.
   60. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2017 at 05:30 PM (#5438449)
Why does it feel like Montgomery is pitching too much? This is only his 6th appearance, and if he finishes this 2nd inning, it's only 10IP on the year. In my mind, he's pitched at least double that.
   61. The Honorable Ardo Posted: April 19, 2017 at 06:14 PM (#5438476)
Play Albert Almora every day! He drags out a 10-pitch PA, striking out on a sharp breaking ball that could have been called either way. Earlier he hit his first home run of the season.
   62. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2017 at 06:23 PM (#5438485)
Yeah, we all expected his defense to be spectacular, but his hitting has impressed me. Not just the results, but the approach and the contact. Heyward has been hitting some, and you're not gonna sit Schwarber, so this means one of Javy or Zobrist should be sitting more often, which their bats right now warrant.
   63. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2017 at 06:54 PM (#5438497)
Well well well. Look at those comeback, walk off Cubs. And RP Carl Edwards with the game winning run.

Russell destroyed that pitch.
   64. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: April 19, 2017 at 07:17 PM (#5438505)
That was fun.

I'll be seeing the Cubs in person for the first time as defending champs on Friday; I was debating whether to wear my Russell road jersey or the world champs under armour long sleeve tee. My decision may have been made.

Gotta feel pretty good about winning 2 of 3 in a series where the Cubs led for a combined total of, like, 2 innings.

EDIT: OK, 2.5 innings. They took the lead in the bottom of the 6th last night and held it. They never led Monday, and didn't lead today until they won it.

also, Mookie Betts didn't strike out and Gsellman didn't suck in the first inning. I really wish I could get the Red Sox on my MLB.tv subscription out here in Western MA, but getting every Mets game with the SNY booth is worth the price of admission.

That was a great, great relay throw to get Cespedes at home plate. I like Cespedes's aggressiveness there. It's early, it's 2 outs, and anything less than a good throw from the OF followed by an inch perfect throw from the relay man and he scores.

I've seen snarks about Starlin Castro, but he looks fine at second and good at the plate.

Kinda.

Hahaha!

I always liked Castro. But he was not better than the younger options.

The last time I saw back to back homeruns by the Yankees was like in 1984 or something.
I should watch more.

OMG Judge crushed that.

BTW, if anyone is watching the Giants, please don't spoil the misery for me. I want to watch the condensed game misery tomorrow.

To be fair, people get frustrated with all-star prospects who don't live up to expectations. Castro juzt turned 27. He'll never be an all-star, and his fielding can be shaky, but that last AB showed great patience, and he didn't miss the 3-0.

He got the Yanks only RBI last night with a bases-loaded walk when it would have been tempting to swing for the fences.

The cleanup spot apparently agrees with him.

I don't want to get too excited too early -- they're beating up on mediocre teams -- but the Yankees look solid in every aspect, and have a great pen.

We'll see next week against the Red Sox and Orioles.

Dont understand the replay on that one. Too close to reverse.

Castro started hot last year too. Think he was too much of a space cadet for ss.

Probably wasn't Joe West who made the call...

And why is Jake Gyllenhaal pitching for the White Sox ? Is he preparing for a role ?

Donnie Putnam 2 ?!
