too much of a space cadet for ss.

He'll be a youngster well into his 30s. Baby faced, too.

I don't want to get too excited too early -- they're beating up on mediocre teams -- but the Yankees look solid in every aspect, and have a great pen.

And doing that without starting SS Didi Gregorius, for the entire season, and starting catcher Gary Sanchez, for most of it; while Greg Bird has only recently broken out of what had been an awful start to the season. Some reasons for optimism here.
   103. Jesus Frankenstein Posted: April 19, 2017 at 08:57 PM (#5438581)
Yanks haven't missed a beat with Sanchez on the shelf. Romine is solid all-around.

Judge's homer (448 feet) was the hardest hit in NYS since statcast. 115.5 mph two ticks higher than Stanton's record blast.

Also, Elias says Judge is the biggest non-pitcher ever.

Biggest tooth gap for sure.

Besides soon-to-be-gone Kozma, no weak spots otherwise. I'm sure they're will be some guy in the pen I don't want to see, but I haven't identified him yet.

Gsellman would have been as effective if he still couldn't swing a bat.

I would get a Bruce shirt for the sole purpose of taunting you if you were going to be at the BBTF softball game.

Do you think they set up a mic next to a Victrola for GBA?

BTW, if anyone is watching the Giants, please don't spoil the misery for me. I want to watch the condensed game misery tomorrow.

No promises, mate. Do you also plan to flood omnichatter tomorrow while delay-watching today's game, Ray-T@AT&T?
   112. The Yankee Clapper Posted: April 19, 2017 at 09:13 PM (#5438593)
Braves let Julio Teheran pitch to Harper again with runners on 1st & 3rd; WP lets runner on 3rd score, poor throw by catcher lets runner on 1st get to 3rd; and Harper is then walked intentionally. That's the best the Braves have done against Harper in any of his ABs tonight, by far.
   113. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: April 19, 2017 at 09:14 PM (#5438594)
Well pitched by Gsellman, 7+ pretty good innings.
   114. vortex of dissipation Posted: April 19, 2017 at 09:14 PM (#5438595)
Ichiro homered today in what will probably be his last AB ever in Seattle.

Apparently he really can homer whenever he wants to.

I went to that game specifically to see Ichiro, hoping he'd play. He is my all-time favorite baseball player, and I'm pretty sure this will be last time I'll ever see him play in person. When he hit the home run, I pumped my fist in air and yelled "YES!". Even though he was an opposing player, virtually the entire crowd gave him a standing ovation. It's as emotional a moment as I've ever experienced at a sporting event, up there with Kelsey Plum's 57-point game when she broke the NCAA career scoring record...

Rick Porcello is only pitching well to make you feel worse when he blows it, Jose. Be strong!
   122. Jose is El Absurd Bronson Y Pollo Posted: April 19, 2017 at 09:30 PM (#5438609)
Nah, Sandoval is the one who blew it. Well, him and Moreland but since Moreland is hitting over .200 and doesn't have three errors already and had the decency to arrive at camp in shape I'll let it go.

Jason Grilli gets out of a jam, and gets the Jays through a scoreless 8th.
Not many opportunities so far this season for Grilli to pitch and protect a lead.

If you care about such things, Grilli is active in the community. Throughout the month of April, baseball fans attending games at Rogers Centre can purchase grilled cheeses at a stand called "Fire Up The Grilli", with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Jays Care Foundation. Here's a link with Jason flipping the sandwiches.

http://jaysfromthecouch.com/2017/04/14/toronto-blue-jays-jason-grilli-grilled-cheese-rogers-center-mlb-news/

I never followed Grilli's career too closely, but he seems like a good dude.

Thank Christ, we finally won a game.
   129. JJ1986 Posted: April 19, 2017 at 09:47 PM (#5438622)
The Mets have 4 relievers they trust (maybe 4.5) and their starters aren't allowed to go long. Not a recipe for a fresh bullpen.
   130. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: April 19, 2017 at 09:52 PM (#5438625)
Snowboy, anyone who played for Italy in the 2006 World Baseball Classic can't be all bad, right?

Russlan, I'm on board with your counter jinx shenanigans. It's not like Bruce is Eric O'Flaherty, who was so bad that my mother who watches probably 120 Mets games a year totally blocked from her memory.
   131. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: April 19, 2017 at 09:52 PM (#5438626)
Who are the trustworthy relievers? Familia, Reed, and Blevins I assume. Maybe Smoker? Perhaps Salas if he isn't pitched everyday? Robles against righties for the most part?

I think you are hoping that Lugo can help at some point, but it's going to be a problem.
   132. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: April 19, 2017 at 09:54 PM (#5438627)
Salas has to be in there. But still, 4 halfway reliable relievers is better than almost any team can say.
   133. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: April 19, 2017 at 09:55 PM (#5438628)
I actually think Bruce sucks. He's on a hot streak right now but he's a mediocre hitter with limited defensive value who is 30 years old. I'm not expecting a lot from him the rest of the year.
   134. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: April 19, 2017 at 09:57 PM (#5438629)
I view him as a non-defensively skilled Jackie Bradley Junior. For a month he'll look like Mickey Mantle, for a month he'll look like the corpse of Mickey Mantle, and it averages it out to a 120 OPS+.
   135. Jesus Frankenstein Posted: April 19, 2017 at 09:57 PM (#5438631)
Grilli's been around forever, a top prospect of the Giants (4th overall pick) who never panned out as a starter (injuries, I think), remade himself as a reliever, and here he is, 20 years later.

Great parlay tonight, if only I'd thought of it beforehand: Yanks, O's, Jays, Nats, Wizards, Caps.

See if Kershaw can get the Dodgers back on track. Injury bug already biting. Logan Forsythe took a pitch off the (broken) toe last night.

Beats a broken sholder blade.

The "non defensively skilled thing" is pretty important. Bradley's younger and has been getting better. Bruce is 30 years old, plays RF adequately not well, and has a career OPS+ of 110.

Mets fans have to be some of the unhappiest in baseball.

I really love watching this starting staff, and I really like most of this team.

Incidentally, C.B. Bucknor had another "CB Bucknor Moment" in the Nationals-Braves game that I didn't see remarked upon in the Omnichatter so far. Thankfully, this time he was immediately overruled by the rest of the umpiring crew.

Details?

Crazy ending with the Rays beating the Tigers in the 9th. K-Rod loaded the bases in a 7-6 game with nobody out, got Steven Souza on a controversial check-swing (but the correct call). Then he got an easy DP grounder, but Iglesias stumbled on second and his throw got away, giving the Rays two runs. Unfortunately he also took a knee to the face from the sliding baserunner and seemed to get knocked out. He eventually walked off under his own power.

Details?

Bonifacio slid feet-first to catch the ball, which landed about 6 inches in front of his glove. Twitter video.

In other news, vague reports are trickling out of the Nats clubhouse about Bryce Harper roundaboutly admitting that he played most of last year with a hurt right shoulder. I'm assuming he's close to 100% healthy this year based on his monster offensive numbers thus far. May he stay healthy all year long! Look out Mike Trout!

Excerpt from Tom Boswell's weekly chat:

Harper needed to show he's Harper again. He is, with 2 homers, 4 walks, and a .976 OPS. On Opening Day I asked him alone if he'd hurt his shoulder making an awkward catch and banging into the wall. He replied, "Oh, I'm OK. It was the other one." And he nodded his head toward his right shoulder as being "the other one" that, I'm assuming, was BOTHERING HIM LAST YEAR. Thanks, Bryce.

Live, I thought Goodface caught it bc his body was shielding the glove , but Bucknor was looking right at the play. He obviously didn't see it, and was guessing.

Buy that man a dog.
