WILL THE RED SOX EVER LOSE ANOTHER GAME?

Relax. They lost Saturday. Their win streak is an astounding ONE GAME.
   4. Bote Man Posted: June 26, 2018 at 01:24 PM (#5699874)
The Nationals manage to put 2 runners on base (without a hit, mind you) and hand over a free out to the Rays when they put on a double steal, but Eaton changes his mind leaving 2B while Harper puts his head down and charges into 2B safely. You might say that was "heads-down baserunning". Ramos held up the throw and just ran out to tag Eaton who was dead to rights near the SS position. When things go bad, they go very bad.

Edit: Nats hitless through 5 innings. It's a nice day outside, hmmm...

Dan Kolko @masnKolko
In Scherzer’s last 31 innings of work, the Nats have scored two runs. A talented lineup that just can’t find consistent production lately.
   6. Bote Man Posted: June 26, 2018 at 02:44 PM (#5699952)
Kevin Cash must have caught something left in the manager's chair by Joe Maddon. Having just walked Bryce Harper, Alvarado is moved from the mound to FIRST BASE so that Chaz Roe can throw righty to Rendon. Jake Bauers to LF, other odd changes which will no doubt be undone after Rendon's AB. Nats trail 1-0 in the 9th.

Managyrations happening.
   7. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 26, 2018 at 02:45 PM (#5699953)
Rays are rotating their left-handed pitcher to first base, with a runner on, to bring in a right-hander, with 1st baseman to LF.. Hmm.

EDIT: An over-managed beverage to #6.

Jason Collette @jasoncollette

Your up-to-the-minute ERA leaders since the Rays started the Jonny Bullpen games on 5/19:

Rays: 2.95
Yankees: 3.03
Dodgers: 3.19
Red Sox: 3.28
Cubs: 3.37

Rays have played vs BAL, OAK, SEA, TOR, NYY, HOU, WAS in this run (collective .536 winning %). 24 last 27 vs teams > .500

Follow-up tweet says TB's ERA is now 2.87 after today. This really isn't related to my other tweets, but I was under the impression the Rays had been burned more often than not by doing this.
   12. cardsfanboy Posted: June 26, 2018 at 03:49 PM (#5700020)
According to St Louis Cardinals, they won their 10,000 game in their history last night. But I'm not sure what they are counting by. If you go by since 1892 and trust bb-reference, they are at 9996, so there is some discrepencies going on between the counts. Other NL teams with 10,000 wins include the Cubs, Dodgers, Braves, Giants, and Pirates, at least according to one article.

Well, Blake Snell has a 1.47 ERA over the last 30 days, so he's helping a lot, and has nothing to do with the "openers".

The "openers" themselves have been a mixed bag. Stanek has been excellent, Romo crappy, and Andriese Meh.

Alderson out on medical leave, effective immediately. Ricco, Ricciardi, and Manaya to "split the role".

That seems like a recipe for disaster.

Not today.
HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!
   16. Howie Menckel Posted: June 26, 2018 at 06:50 PM (#5700130)
Mets GM Alderson's "medical leave" is a recurrence of cancer. And while the Mets haven't admitted he's out of a job, Alderson conceded that a return - even if he can get healthy enough - was "not warranted," given the shitshow of the last 60 games.

I'm paraphrasing

Will Pujols hit two homeruns to the streets of Boston and later, get thrown out at first after a Green Monster DOINK ricochet?
I doubt it. The first part at least.
When I think of Price pitching @Fenway, I always think of a comebacker to his chest. Dunno why.
I also doubt that happening.

   18. Walt Davis Posted: June 26, 2018 at 07:00 PM (#5700137)
And how many have been "Jonny Bullpen" games vs "6th inning reliever pitches the first inning instead then 5th starter takes over" games?

5/19: Romo for 1 (0 runs), Yarbrough for 6.1
5/25: Romo for 0.2 (1 run), Yarbrough for 7
5/31: Stanek for 1.1 (2 runs), Yarbrough for 5.2
6/6: Venters for 0.1 (5 runs), Yarbrough for 5.1
6/11: Yarbrough for 6
6/16: Stanek for 1.1 (0 runs), Yarbrough for 3.2 (4 runs),
6/22: Stanek for 1 (0 runs), Yarbrough for 3.1 (0 runs), Castillo for 1.2 (0 runs)

So as suggested above this is an "opener" model, not a Jonny Bullpen model. The openers have given 5.2 innings and 8 runs ... or 5.1 and 3 runs if you drop Venters. That's not very good. Starting with the 5/19 game, Yarbrough has given them 7 non-starts for 37 innings and a 3.99 ERA which is pretty nice from a 5th starter. In 4 of those games, he pitched to 25 to 27 batters so he wasn't even saved from going through the order 3 times in those games. In 2 of the games he likely was saved from facing the top of the order for a 3rd time (21 and 23 BF).

Now if we want to push the starting date later, we might have more examples. Two SPs are on the DL and a third is back in AAA, leaving just Snell, Eovaldi and a 28-year-old guy named Font (4 GS, 1.64 ERA, 4.11 FIP). That seems partly why Yarbrough got some regular starts. So there are a few other dates to check:

6/7: Stanek for 1 (0 runs), Pruitt for 7 (5 runs)
6/12: 6 relievers, 1 run (Pruitt was the 2nd reliever but went just 2.2, 1 run)
6/18: 7 relievers, 5 runs
6/24: Andriese for 3 (3 runs), 2 RP for another 2 (2 runs), Nuno for 4 (1 run ... that's a tough blown save), onto extras, eventually using Yarbrough for the win.

So since the Archer injury they have implemented a bullpen day, starting on 6/12 so they've had 3 of them (maybe 1 or 2 earlier too). Ignoring the extras, those 3 games they've given up 12 runs which is solid enough.

The Rays are way out in front on "relief" innings with 346 (LAA 2nd with 292), roughly half of their total innings. Of course that's counting a lot of Yarbrough's innings as "relief" and a smidgen of relievers' innings as "starts" so it's really probably closer to the Angels' total. Their "starter" ERA is 3.95, their "reliever" 3.59 and that gap is right in line with the league average gap (0.34).

Coley Harvey, ESPN Staff Writer

At Triple-A, infielder Brandon Drury continues to get reps at first base. Aaron Boone said that giving Drury 1B reps in order to play it soon at the MLB level was "not something on the front burner with us." It's more of a long-term play to make Drury even more versatile.

I suppose managers have to say stuff like that, rather than say that Neil Walker's job is in jeopardy. Greg Bird, too. Those guys need to pick it up a bit. Drury is hitting very well at Scranton.

weird play in the Mets-Pirates game.

3-3, top 8th, 1st and 2nd with 1 out. forceout at 2nd, Harrison with a clean slide into Cabrera to help break up a DP. Mets hothead Familia tries to call out Harrison, who rightly gets ticked off.

Cabrera comes over to hug Harrison and pull him away as the benches clear because - well, MLB is too dumb to simply eliminate that. nothing happens, as nobody other than Familia was upset.

somewhere in his mom's basement, Ruben Tejada wishes Harrison had taught Chase Utley how to slide into second cleanly and effectively.

ok, another weird Mets-Pirates play.

3-3, 1st and 2nd, 0 out, bottom of the 10th. Mets have their RBI leader Cabrera (43) up - and he tries to bunt. he sucks at bunting because ... it's 2018. pops it up just behind the catcher - who fumbles it away.

incredibly - wait, it is the Mets - Cabrera bunts AGAIN. this time it's an easy popout to the pitcher. wow

with 2 out, here comes fan favorite Wil Flores. and there is a single.

Mets have a paltry 3 walkoff wins this year. the runs have been driven in by Flores, Flores, and Flores.
