It turns out Sandy Leon wasn’t the savior after all, which reminds us of Doug Mirabelli

Theo Epstein doesn’t regret much about his tenure as Red Sox general manager, but bringing back Doug Mirabelli is an exception.

In 2006, Mirabelli famously received a police escort to Fenway Park after being reacquired from the Padres to once again serve as Tim Wakefield’s personal catcher. The Red Sox had shipped Mirabelli west that winter for second baseman Mark Loretta and acquired Josh Bard from Cleveland to handle Wakefield’s knuckler.

It was a disaster. Bard allowed 10 passed balls in five starts, and Epstein panicked. He brought Mirabelli back on May 1 in exchange for Bard and promising reliever Cla Meredith.

Wondering what this line of thought suggests about the theology of Red Sox fans….

Meredith, of course, is about to have his number retired in San Diego.

just kidding. he followed with ERAs of 3.50, 4.09, 3.99, and 5.40 before ending his MLB career

Worse yet, finally free from the oppressive Red Sox regime that totally derailed his career, Blake Swihart is swinging a hot stick in the desert (.083/.154/.083).

What does this mean for Leon's HOF case?

I forgot about Cla Meredith. I thought his name had been misspelled by his parents. However it is actually an abbreviation and he now seems like an elite southern gentleman.

Olise Claiborne "Cla" Meredith III (/ˈkleɪ/; born June 4, 1983), nicknamed "The Claw", is a former Major League Baseball relief pitcher. He previously played for the Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres, and Baltimore Orioles.

More information:

Post-baseball
Meredith currently resides in Richmond, Virginia with his wife and 3 children. He is a professional firefighter for Henrico County.

He's about to turn the corner!!!

At least his downward trend has been consistent. Leon's batting and slugging averages the last four years have been .310/.476, .225/.354, .177/.279, and .091/.182. I'm looking forward to next year's negative batting average and positive, but sub-.100 slugging.

But, in the three full seasons the Red Sox have won the division all three times and have a World Series as well! Count the bannerz and ring!

Ten days later, where do we stand?
Always a great vantage point for analyzing whether a trade was a hasty overreaction to a small sample.

Olise Claiborne "Cla" Meredith III

Shouldn't it have been abbreviated as "Clai?" Or, you know, just "Clay" (the abbreviation should match the sound rather than the exact spelling).

Ol' Cla would have been even better. Gets both names in there *and* doubles the southernness.

I looked for the thread on the Mirabelli trade, just to see how the comments held up, but didn’t find it. Perhaps those with more skill or patience will have better luck. My recollection is that the BBTF reaction was similar to that elsewhere - previously panicky pants pissers expressing great relief, with others noting it was an overpay - but I could be misremembering.

I couldn't find it either but for some reason the search "bbtf" mirabelli trade did pull up an image of Adam West as Batman so maybe Google has hit the hard stuff.

“Previously panicky pants pissers”
That’s a catchy phrase that needs to be restated more often as the occasion demands.
Though I am hardly qualified to do so, here’s a coke to the Yankee Clapper for cheering my gloomy morning

It got us a reprise of Dougie's Going Deep, though, so not entirely a one sided deal.

My in-laws are from Richmond and their last name is Cliborne (so, minus the "a", but probably a spelling variant of the same name) and "Cla" is absolutely the way my father-in-law pronounces the first syllable of his last name.

Here you go. Most of it is Yankees fans whining that Boston got him for nothing as usual.

Speaking of "setting the market" did the Sox do that for SP's with the Pedro extension after they traded for him? I think it might have paved the way for the K-Brown deal and Randy Johnson pimple-greasing his way out of Seattle.
I have no I idea what I was trying to say, but I said it in style!
