ITD: Jackson: Andruw Jones has torn cartilage in his right knee

Or as Joe Torre said…“He has a cranky right knee.”

We learned after the game that Andruw Jones had an MRI today, that the MRI showed fluid and torn cartilage in his right knee and that if it isn’t better by Thursday or Friday, he’ll have arthroscopic surgery that will sideline him, according to what Jones says the doctors told him, for four to five weeks. My experience has been that they usually don’t even TALK about surgery unless they’re fairly sure it’s going to happen. But he is going to get treatment and try to make it work. ... By the way, if you get an early edition of tomorrow’s paper, you won’t read about Jones, because we didn’t know until after the game.

I don't know if I should be happy or upset about this development.
On the one hand, $18m on the DL is nice. On the other hand, I prefer Andruw Jones in the lineup.

It is beginning to look as if AJ's pretty clear case for the HOF is now looking very murky, now that he has a 2 year hole blown in his career (as he isn't going to have time to get counting stats or enough AB's to get his average up from .170, even if he returns in 4 weeks and then has his normal year, the rest of the way).

He wouldn't be the first superstar Atlanta CF to go from sure HOF to not quite good enough. His career is starting to look very Murphy.

More likely just wear and tear, of two distinct varieties. Murphy came up in the organization as a catcher and had the requisite years of catching in the minors on his knees. He also played in Fulton County Stadium which was probably less than optimal. Andruw just ran the crap out of his legs from the day he entered the org. If this is something that was building for years his case is more of the "don't jump up against the outfiedl wall like Spiderman or fall onto your belly and knees to catch would-be singles every day, every game, every season, for 10+ years."

Added weight is never good for the knees either. If he's trying to run around at a heavy age 30 like he did at a light ago 20, tearing stuff up isn't that surprising.

I hate to say I told ya so about Andruw, for among other reasons the fact that I've always rooted for him. But this guy had "early decline" red flags all over him.

Presumably (and hopefully) he'll make it through this, and start hitting something better than .170. But I agree that the HOF case is looking awfully shaky right now.

Arthroscopic surgery is pretty far to go to make your let's-try-something-else-for-a-while phantom injury look legit. Why didn't they just go the Zito route and move Andruw "to the bullpen" in order to not play him for a week or two? Or diagnose "dead arm" as is traditional in these cases.

Weight jokes aside, Andruw has played a lot of games over the past 10 years. That kind of wear and tear gets to anyone.

Has there ever been a question of his age being legitimate? This may be an overdone topic, but I honestly don't remember it. He's got some of the red flags.

Indeed, just as I suspected, Andruw Jones has played more games than anyone else in MLB since the start of the 1997 season.

Although he's from Curacao, he's a Dutch citizen, I think. It's possible that he's older than his listed age but much more unlikely than someone from the DR.

Fluid doesn't accumulate within the knee without structural damage to cause it. If they were just making excuses to get him out of the lineup, this wouldn't be what they'd settle on.
