HOW WILL THE ANGELS REST TODAY?!
   2. PreservedFish Posted: April 11, 2019 at 12:37 PM (#5830823)
Today I'll watch Chris Davis for the first time this year. Very excited.

Random Mariner fact of the day: When Haniger hit a HR in the 9th yesterday, the local radio announcer said that the team had tied a record, and set a new one. The tie is for HR in most games to start a season, at 14. OK, reasonable enough.

The new MLB record held by the 2019 Seattle Mariners? They've scored 6 or more runs in 12 of the first 14 games of a season! This apparently eclipsed 11 of 14 accomplished by the Yankees in the 20s. The color guy chipped in "move over, Ruth and Gehrig!"

It's really quite ridiculous. Oh, and for those who care, Vogelbach's OPS has slipped to 1.683.
   4. PreservedFish Posted: April 11, 2019 at 12:41 PM (#5830827)
Are the Mariners actually good?
   5. PepTech Posted: April 11, 2019 at 12:43 PM (#5830828)
No.
   6. Master of the Horse Posted: April 11, 2019 at 12:48 PM (#5830831)
I thought the Crew made a terrible trade involving Domingo Santana, I acquired Santana in my auction draft even knowing that Safeco crushes righty power, and I think Santana will totally outhit Braun and Gamel combined this season. So no idea about anyone else on the M's but I am a Domingo Santana BELIEVER.
   7. PepTech Posted: April 11, 2019 at 12:58 PM (#5830837)
The M's might maybe be "good" by next year, we'll see. A lot has to develop in the pitching arena before then.

Their defense sucks. Hopefully some of these guys will grow into it, or the prospects they acquired will be able to hold a glove in the proper hand. Right now it's brutal, particularly in the infield. When Jay Bruce is your best defensive 1B, you know you're in trouble.

For the moment, though, they're fun to watch, that's for sure. It's more like a little league game than MLB, but what the hell, we'll enjoy it while it lasts. Which will probably be until this weekend, when Houston hits town. They have been fortunate not to run into any pitchers (at all) who were having a good day, except Trevor Cahill (and somehow squeaked it out 2-1).

Santana does look to be the steal of the winter, as far as the many moves of Dipoto have turned out thus far. Most won't be gradable until 2021 or later.

Chris Davis hit a ball hard into the RCF gap. It was caught, of course, and he had to smile about it.
   9. cardsfanboy Posted: April 11, 2019 at 01:19 PM (#5830843)
Cardinals have a getaway lineup against the Dodgers today...in some cases it's a break even... No Ozuna, Fowler, Carpenter or Molina... Instead you get O'Neil, Martinez, Gyorko and Wieters.
   10. PreservedFish Posted: April 11, 2019 at 01:26 PM (#5830845)
Khris Davis has the 6th highest HR/AB of all time.
   11. cardsfanboy Posted: April 11, 2019 at 01:34 PM (#5830852)
Damnit Freese.... 2-0 Dodgers... they are on pace for a 9+ run game.

Buehler with a hr to make it 3-0

7- I like what Seattle is doing though, just putting out its best offensive lineup regardless—see which of these guys has the bat to play their “right” defensive position later on.

Ryon Healy has no future at third base. But play him there now, to see if he can hit enough to be an everyday DH.
   14. cardsfanboy Posted: April 11, 2019 at 01:41 PM (#5830856)
So far two homeruns for the Dodgers today.... it's 2 outs in the second innning.
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: April 11, 2019 at 01:51 PM (#5830862)
Cardinals score a run with a bases loaded no out hbp.... 3-1 right now... Wieters has a chance to gain a lot of goodwill right here.

He'll fit right in with Encarnacion and Vogelbach and Bruce.

17--No MLBTV only the greatest streaming of all time??
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: April 11, 2019 at 01:56 PM (#5830868)
I disagree with McCarver here, even though it turned out he was right...

Bases loaded no outs 8th place hitter up to bat a deep fly ball to left field, in which the man on second could have probably tagged and made it to third...... he argued the pitcher is going to sac anyway so he didn't need to go.

and I'm thinking.... but that is a force at third now.... but Wacha made a decent enough bunt that it worked exactly as McCarver predicted.

Nice play there.... Bader scores from second on a wild pitch, Cardinals up 4-3 now.

Dejong with an automatic double..... he currently leads the team in ops and has been killing the ball lately...and has hit in 12 straight.

For the record, the weather in St Louis according to the app on my phone is "wind advisory in effect until 7:00pm." The balls in the air are going to be helped by the wind. 20mph with up to 36 mph gusts.

TDF, trained monkey Posted: April 06, 2019 at 12:01 PM (#5829172)

Despite playing 5 of 7 games at GABP, the Reds are 2nd in the league in RA (just 21) and 1st in HR allowed (2). Last season, they allowed 44 R and 9 HR thru 7 games. Unfortunately, they've only scored 11 runs in those same 7 games - 5 on opening day. They haven't lead at any point in any game since opening day (only twice, for 5 innings total, have they even been tied at a score other than 0-0), and are currently on a 28 inning scoreless streak. Thus, the 1-6 record.
From the time I made that comment until now (2:23 ET, Miami has hit in the 6th inning) the Reds have scored 30 runs while allowing 14. Entering today, they were 1st in the league in RA/G by half a run (3.18, which looks to improve more as they're shutting out the Marlins) and have improved to 4th worst in the league in RS/G (3.68, which will also improve as they've already scored 4 runs today).

So I guess I did jinx them.

I don't know if this has been commented on, but, Jesse Winker, he of the -14 DRS in only 586 innings between RF and LF last year, is starting his 2nd game of the year in CENTER FIELD.

He didn't make an out! He didn't get a hit, but, he didn't make an out! And, ultimately, scored a run! Progress!
   35. Khrushin it bro Posted: April 11, 2019 at 02:51 PM (#5830903)
Chris Davis hasn't looked terrible and has hit a few balls hard. He just needs a little luck, hopefully next series once the A's leave town.
   36. Master of the Horse Posted: April 11, 2019 at 02:52 PM (#5830906)
10--And the Brewers traded Davis because he tried first base and hated it, his arm is super terrible so even left field was considered a stretch and the Brewers felt they had better options. I think between trading Davis and Santana Milwaukee will look at 2019 and go holy #### we traded away 80 homers for nothing.
   37. cardsfanboy Posted: April 11, 2019 at 03:13 PM (#5830913)
Bases loaded no outs for the Cardinals with Gyorko, Bader coming up.
   38. cardsfanboy Posted: April 11, 2019 at 03:14 PM (#5830914)
Cardinals have yet to get a base hit with the bases loaded this season...after Gyorko's strikeout they are 0-7 with bases loaded.

More than likely O'Neil will be a starter next year..... Plays three positions, plus power, speed, and defense... can't really judge him as he has played this year since most of his at bats are late inning replacement(facing relief pitcher), pinch hitting etc.

if it was later in the game, that would have been called defensive indifference.
They didn't hold him, didn't try to throw him out etc.

just for fun.. I fully expect in the year 2024 the 3/4 hitters for the Cardinals will challenge 100 hr in a season (O'Neil/Gorman) and of course I realize that it's a truly ridiculous thought, but man do those guys have big time power.
   50. cardsfanboy Posted: April 11, 2019 at 03:42 PM (#5830942)

WHIT’s 31-game hitting streak
Has anyone started calling it a Whitting streak yet?
   60. Davo cant be eatin thirty hot dogs every day Posted: April 11, 2019 at 03:52 PM (#5830955)
0 for 5 for Whit. :(

But there’s still hope, if the KC bullpen can blow the lead and send this to extras!
   61. salvomania Posted: April 11, 2019 at 03:52 PM (#5830956)
By my reckoning, this is the 9th time this year (in 14 games) that the Dodgers have allowed 5+ runs. They've also allowed four runs in three more games (all losses).

If the Dodgers lose today, it will be the first time they've lost when scoring more than 4 runs (are currently 8-0 with 4+ runs).
   62. cardsfanboy Posted: April 11, 2019 at 03:55 PM (#5830957)
Just judging by Gameday descriptions, but Dodgers sure do seem sloppy today...

The error by the second baseman was him trying to alligator the ball into his glove and it glanced off the top of his fingers.

Jose Martinez double hit the base of the wall, the right fielder was playing about 40 feet in from the wall.

The first wild pitch that allowed two runs deflected off the catcher up the first base line, the catcher goes and chases it, I don't know where the first baseman was.

Wieters stole second base because they just didn't bother to even pay attention to him.

Martinez scored on a wild pitch from second base, in which he should have been out going to third but the catcher made a bad throw, and the third baseman didn't want to concede the base so stood his ground longer than he should before moving to catch the ball.

And I'm sure I'm missing a couple of other plays...sloppy doesn't describe it well enough.

   67. cardsfanboy Posted: April 11, 2019 at 04:23 PM (#5830970)
as long as Dozier doesn't get caught stealing or something stupid, and the Royals don't score, Whit is guaranteed another pa.
   68. cardsfanboy Posted: April 11, 2019 at 04:25 PM (#5830971)
Miller looking much better the past two appearances.

I'm actually pretty sure there was an article addressing this exact issue at the time, and I think they determined it was like the second most unlikely streak... I don't remember the most unlikely though, but I think it was someone in the 60's when considering run environments and quality of hitter.

But googling for that study doesn't seem to bring up anything.

78- Just a guess, but Sandy Alomar Sr? Career .245 hitter, had a 22-game hit streak in 1970.

I was just going through the list of longest hitting streaks of that era, he looked like the worst hitter (to me).

I remember looking at Uggla's streak in particular because his average was .173 when it started; he improved his batting average in each of the first 27 games of the streak, which I have to think is a record. (He went 1/5 in game 28; it was his fourth 1/5 of the streak, but the other three all came when he was still below .200.)
