Will Chris Sale be too hungover to pitch tonight?

Will Chris Sale be too hungover to pitch tonight?
And will he pitch anyway?

Some one on Reddit has figured out how to have the maximum playoff chaos:

Two-team tie for the NL Central, and an EIGHT-team tie for the NL East, NL West, and second wild card.
   5. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: September 21, 2018 at 04:25 PM (#5749141)
So how many days will it take for that scenario to collapse? I'd go with one.
   6. Random Transaction Generator Posted: September 21, 2018 at 04:42 PM (#5749152)
There is some wiggle room to move wins around, but yeah it probably collapses to a 5 or 4 team scenario after tonight if things don't work out perfectly.
WSH has to run the table, and ATL and LAD can only win one game each for the rest of the season.
   7. Spahn Insane Posted: September 21, 2018 at 04:46 PM (#5749155)
Okay then. Today we get batting practice Quintana.
   8. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: September 21, 2018 at 04:48 PM (#5749157)
Yeah, it would be a good day for the offense to do its thing for the Cubs.

Whew only gave up 3. Hopefully thats all for the day.

   12. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 21, 2018 at 05:24 PM (#5749186)
It goes without saying that the Cubs cannot afford to be losing games in late September to a 90-loss White Sox team.
   13. Spahn Insane Posted: September 21, 2018 at 05:32 PM (#5749192)
Quintana sucks.

XM runs various interviews as filler on their play-by-play channels. I just heard them asking Cal Ripken about shifts, defensive positioning, and the Phillies running Assdribble Cabrera out there and Cal gave some very thoughtful responses. That is all.

The game, not the World Series. They are due again in 2087.

Back from dinner and was gonna cut on the Mets @ Nats game, but based on the tweets from the beats I shan't bother.

Upon further review, deGrom is pitching so maybe I'll see what all the C.Y. fuss is about.
   28. Random Transaction Generator Posted: September 21, 2018 at 08:22 PM (#5749268)
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. has now hit a home run in 3 straight plate appearances.
He hit one in the 9th inning last night in the 7-run come-from-behind inning, and he's hit one in his first two plate appearances in this game.
He's going to cost the Jays $19.5million (in total) over the next 5 seasons, and he's only 24.

   29. phredbird Posted: September 21, 2018 at 08:37 PM (#5749273)

HOW WILL THE CARDINALS KEEP ME HANGING ON?

time for them to fatten up their record a little before going up against the brewers and cubs next week.

wong already showing some glove early ...

and now a score against mad bum with two out ...

Mark Zuckerman @MarkZuckerman
deGrom through 5 innings of 1-run ball on 78 pitches. Ross back to the mound for the 6th, also at 78 pitches, trailing 4-1.

If they both have thrown 78 pitches, shouldn't they be tied???
   33. phredbird Posted: September 21, 2018 at 08:53 PM (#5749280)

oh mama, gant caught bumgarnderner expecting something different, struck him out with a sneak attack fastball with runners at the corners to end the inning.

HOW MANY WAYS WILL THE PHILS TRY TO GIVE THIS GAME AWAY?

[X] Wild pitch
[X] Errant pickoff throw
[X] Flop a curve on the outside of the plate to allow Freeman to poke a single through the big empty shift space to drive in a run
[X] Boneheaded steal of third with one out; of the "slide off the bag and get caught by replay" variety
[X] Bobble ball on ground in the OF
[ ] Passed Ball
[ ] Catcher throwing error on steal
[ ] OF breaks wrong way on fly ball
[ ] Hoskins can't get to ordinarily easy out
[ ] Santana can't get to ball at third
[ ] Asdrubel Carrera can't get to ball at short
[ ] Some utterly bonehead play that no one can conceive of before it happens
[ ] One of the n relievers (as n approaches infinity) that Kapler uses just doesn't have it and gives up 4 runs
[ ]
   35. phredbird Posted: September 21, 2018 at 08:57 PM (#5749282)

huh, bumbgaerdner complains to the ump about the call, a pitch down and away.

now he's pitching and he's getting some gift calls on the outside corner ...

i see what he did there.
   36. cardsfanboy Posted: September 21, 2018 at 09:02 PM (#5749284)
Madison Bumgarner has to be considered the best hitting pitcher in the game right now, year in year out.... but of course that made me look up the history of great hitting pitchers in bb-ref pi.

I did a pi search for players who played 50% or more of their career as pitcher, a minimum of 10 homeruns..... and I ended up with 76 names.... I included ops+ just to see how good of a hitter some people were.. .and there are a few from the non-real baseball years that top the list, but among the modern game, you have Ken Brett... (ust behind Wes Ferrel) ... Bret has a career line of 95 ops+... with a slash line of .262/.291/.406/.698 over 373 pa. And you have to wonder why he spent the last few years in the AL.

   40. cardsfanboy Posted: September 21, 2018 at 09:13 PM (#5749289)
During the Cardinals broadcast this year, the Cardinals broadcasters have had interviews with several national writers...and McLaughlin always asks "is Yadier a future hofer"... and every single one of them has said yes... unhesitatingly ... I don't know the guy talking now, but Rosenthal, Costas(no vote) and a couple of others.
   41. cardsfanboy Posted: September 21, 2018 at 09:15 PM (#5749290)
This guy was asked who is the mvp in the NL, and he claims it's a two person race between Baez and Yelich.
   42. cardsfanboy Posted: September 21, 2018 at 09:17 PM (#5749292)
bases loaded walk to tie the game... ugh..

One of the things I do like about Shildt, is he has no qualms about pulling the pitcher in the early innings.... That is one old school feature that I do miss in the modern game.
   43. phredbird Posted: September 21, 2018 at 09:17 PM (#5749293)

man, that's a quick hook.

i know he walked in a run and all but it's just 1-1 in the third, mike.
   44. cardsfanboy Posted: September 21, 2018 at 09:18 PM (#5749295)
It's probably going to backfire of course, because every time I compliment Shildt for a good move, he gets hammered.
   45. cardsfanboy Posted: September 21, 2018 at 09:19 PM (#5749297)
The guy that I was talking about who thinks Molina is a hofer right now, was John Paul Morosi... no clue who the #### he is.

edit: apparently he spells his name Jon.... never trust a john without an h in their name.
   46. phredbird Posted: September 21, 2018 at 09:20 PM (#5749299)

great, now the new pitcher can't find the zone.

hey cfb, you don't trust jon hamm?

he's a cardinal fan, dude.
   48. cardsfanboy Posted: September 21, 2018 at 09:22 PM (#5749302)
Dude... Jon Hamm is too good looking to be human, we know he's an alien designed to seduce all of our women. (but he does have good taste in sports team... maybe it's a subliminal message that the aliens are going to continue Cardinal NL dominance for the next century---and to the women, mating with a Cardinal fan is the way to really make the world better)
   49. phredbird Posted: September 21, 2018 at 09:24 PM (#5749304)

well, he is famous for playing a guy who stole another guy's identity ...
   50. cardsfanboy Posted: September 21, 2018 at 09:29 PM (#5749305)
I thought he was famous for looking great and wearing great suits... I literally have never seen anything with Jon Hamm in it as an actor. (okay, after looking at his imdb... I did see Wet Hot American Summer/Sucker Punch/The A-team/Charmed.... but I have no clue what you are talking about the role that made him famous--I assume Don Draper, but I didn't realize there was any duplicity in that role)
   51. phredbird Posted: September 21, 2018 at 09:40 PM (#5749310)
hm, you've led a sheltered life.

do you have netflix? if you do, stream 'Mad Men'. that's the show that made him famous.

the first three seasons are sublime, the best show i've seen that explores the 60s in the U.S.

season 4 is really good in spots but begins to falter, and then 5-7 are OK, but not what i was hoping for. the storylines lingered too much on characters i did not care for until it began to resemble a soap opera, and did not focus on what made the show interesting, which was the mechanics of advertising and how it has become this ubiquitous intrusion on our lives to the point that we are almost unable to make the meaningful choices we need to make as a society.

also the fact that it was produced on a limited budget begins to show. lots of verisimilitude with costumes and such, but on the whole you become very aware that almost everything was shot on a cheesy soundstage.

Acuña with the VERY Rookie of the Year move:

David O'Brien @DOBrienATL
Acuña totally misplayed a fly ball out into a double, came in when he didn't need to and it sailed over his glove. 2 runs score on the play. Brutal. Phillies up 3-1 in the 7th, 1 out.

a show about immoral people with no protagonist worth spitting on even.... not really my cup of tea... it's 'greed is good' and let's see how bad the world was in the 50's.

Outside of the girl from the west wing and the big titted red head, there is nothing worth watching on that show.

Shows I have zero interest in seeing... Mad Men, Soprano's, Breaking Bad, Orange is The New Black, the serial killer show, the Spacey President show that I can't remember... sorry shows with no redeemable characters have zero appeal to me

you couldn't be more wrong. the real world is a place of shades of moral behavior, and just because someone does questionable things, doesn't mean they aren't looking for a path to redemption.

you don't have to identify with a character in a movie, book whatever to glean useful aids for critical thinking.

I loved The Shield...great show etc... but at some point I just got tired of having a show featuring characters that I could not relate to. I would rather watch 10 episodes of Big Bang Theory than one episode of Breaking Bad. I just gave up on shows in which the show is not about a positive concept and more about the moral gray or even less...

3-1 Cardinals... that throw toasted Gyorko, if the catcher held onto the ball.

   65. phredbird Posted: September 21, 2018 at 10:34 PM (#5749341)

i get it, but mad men had very good writing and you could empathize with the characters in spite of their foibles. at its best it rang true to life.

it wasn't some cartoon violence police show, most of which bear no resemblance to real life. i remember the shield and i watched it, but i knew it for what it was. it's apples and oranges when you compare it to mad men.

i'd still suggest you give mad men a chance. you might be surprised.

Let's put it this way: Cubs and the Brewers basically have the same schedule the rest of the way - 3 games against the Cardinals, 3 games against the Pirates, and 3 games against a weak AL team.

Games aren't a given no matter the record of the team, but the Brewers are going to be in a great position going into the final weekend if they can maintain or improve this space with the Cubs until then. I live in Michigan. I've seen a lot of Tigers baseball this year. We don't want to pin our hopes on the Cubs' division hopes on the Tigers that final weekend.

Rangers beat the Mariners in a rain -shortened game. Adrian Beltre hits his 476th home run to pass Stargell and Musial for 30th all time. Five RBI give him 1,703, passing Thome and Reggie Jackson for 25th.
   82. cardsfanboy Posted: September 21, 2018 at 11:52 PM (#5749378)
Cardinal broadcast is really pushing "8 games to go"

I get that it's a fight to the end, but I just never feel comfortable talking about "wild cars magic number" or pushing how short the remainder of the season is...

This mantra of 8 games is all about being a wild card team... but there is still a very longshot that they win the division..(it would require that the Cubs more or less lose out)
   83. cardsfanboy Posted: September 21, 2018 at 11:56 PM (#5749379)
I honestly didn't realize this, but during the broadcast, the announcers said that the Cardinals have scored the most runs in the second half of the season.... and I finally looked it up... and in the NL that is true, although the A's are ahead of the Cardinals...

A's.. 315 runs since the all star break... Cardinals 307... Nats 301, Yanks 289, Mets 288.(not kidding) Bos 283
   84. cardsfanboy Posted: September 22, 2018 at 12:11 AM (#5749380)
Again... there is absolutely one thing I love about Shildt....and it's not a knock against Matheny or any other manager currently playing.... but I love his decision to pull the starter early.... now it helps because of the bullpen he was handed(something like 4 minor league starting studs that were told that they were going to be relievers)

I've seen too many games where the game is 3-0 in the third inning or so, and the manager keeps the starter in, and watch it become 5-0 and a mop up game.... Shildt is pulling the pitcher before that happens... and I think this is brilliant...and it's a major reason why the Cardinals have been winning under him... games are not getting out of hand under him, so everyone is still trying. (note this isn't a knock against Matheny or others, it's a comment of how the current bullpen usage has created a situation where teams are stuck with pitching a guy until the fifth inning)

The team in the lead is the one in great position. If their pace is the same until that last weekend, the Cubs go into that weekend with a Magic number of either 1 or 2 (the Cubs have an extra game against the Pirates), which of course to you means the Cubs get swept and the Brewers sweep the Tigers, right?

My point, which stands, is that you have a really skewed perspective, that appears to only include the current day's game (or the last couple, but only when it's a loss) plus anything that happened 4 or more years ago.

at some point I just got tired of having a show featuring characters that I could not relate to. I would rather watch 10 episodes of Big Bang Theory

I bet your guy is Sheldon?

re: team scoring post all star game:
Well, the Cards ahev PLAYED more games than most teams since the ASB (60 for STL, 56 for TEX and BOS for example). Thier team OPS is 4th in the NL since the ASB. They have bunched their runs together better than the 3 ahead of them (Mil, Was, LAD).

Last night's Mariners-Rangers game was shortened, and it kept raining all night in Arlington, with a forecast of rain all weekend. It will be interesting to see how they handle the next two games of the series. I have a ticket for tonight's game but there's no way I will use it, because they're likely to start the game at 9pm, delay it again at 11pm, and finish it at 2am or whenever the curfew is these days, while the couple of hundred fans there get wetter and wetter. (And drunker and drunker, because the genius of the late, late rain-delay game is that they keep serving beer through the seventh inning, which could well be early tomorrow morning.)

The game technically matters because the Mariners can tie for the wild card if they win all their remaining games and Oakland loses all of theirs. Yeah, right, I know, but you gotta play the games. In any case, both teams will play 162 this year because the Rangers finish the season in Seattle, and at very worst they can convert one or both of the games into doubleheaders there over next weekend.

Okay, in the second half, the Cardinals have averaged 5.2 runs per game... I didn't know they were scoring that well, compared to the A's at 5.65, Nats at 5.22, Yanks at 5.16, Mets at 4.87, Texas/Bos at 5.18, Dodgers at 4.91, etc... so they have been the third best scoring team in the second half instead of second best like I had stated.... thanks for correcting me for just restating a comment that the broadcast mentioned that I didn't know.

As far as them being fourth in ops and them bunching it their runs together, it might have to do with the fact that the three teams ahead of the Cardinals have grounded into a few more double plays, (44 for the Dodgers, 39 for the Nats and 41 for the Brewers compared to 27 for the Cardinals, in more games as you pointed out) that alone probably compensates the slight difference in their ops (.017 difference between the fourth and first team on that list) gap.

Of course it's not really indicative of anything, at least in comparison to the season total, but it's still an interesting piece of trivia to me.

Early 1-0 lead in the second inning for the Cardinals as Wainwright drives in a run in the second.

I see Bader is batting 7th and I'm thinking "he should bat higher up in the order." and then I look at the lineup and I'm not seeing a spot to move him up.
(My lineup might be different than Shildt's but I don't see anything wrong with what he has... I probably bat Molina third and have Bader 6th in front of Dejong 7th... but that is just re-arranging the chairs and not really making any substantive difference. )

dangit....two out single to tie the game up for the Giants..

Cardinals take the lead, but it sure as heck looked like Carpenter missed third base when he was rounding it...probably just the camera angle though.

Cardinals game is on Fox local and I have probably said this before, but AJ Pierzynski is a good broadcaster and is probably going to be the next McCarver or whatever you think as the biggest name national analyst in a few years.

Great play by Longoria for a 5-4-3 double play. There is no doubting the quality of that play, it was impressive. It's not like Ozuna is a slow runner.
