HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?

Some fallout from the Mets 25-4 loss last night; as might be expected, somebody is out of a job . . . the Nationals Shawn Kelly Designated For Assignment for a glove-throwing temper tantrum after giving up a HR, apparently unhappy that he'd been asked to pitch in a 25-1 game.

I forget the save eligibility rules; is 24 runs too wide a margin to qualify?

Funny to think the Mets could have batted around twice and the margin would still be too wide to qualify for a save.

Gray vs. Cobb. This should be good, and by good I mean terrible.

Cole Hamels gets his first start as a Cub tonight...

Fire Sonny Gray into the sun. Seriously. This is just a #$&!*& joke.

Helluva find here on R/baseball

Jake Diekman will be the first player ever to play for the Rangers and Diamondbacks in the same season, and Tommy Pham the first to play for the Cardinals and Rays. Of a possible 435 combinations, 433 have now happened - only Marlins-Brewers and Marlins-Indians remain

Mets Matz to be evaluated for "forearm discomfort":
Manager Mickey Callaway said Wednesday that Matz reported the pain after he failed to get out of the first inning in Tuesday night's 25-4 loss to the Washington Nationals. Matz threw 32 pitches, faced 11 batters and allowed seven runs on eight hits. Callaway said the 27-year-old was experiencing tightness and a "dead arm."

At least it's not an agricultural STD.

You had the opportunity to deal him for Chatwood.

Well, maybe you still do...

Another shitshow start from Sonny Whitson ...

Sonny Whitson smiles as he's booed off the mound.

What a disaster he's been.

I like Torres, but he's got a LOT of learning to do to reach his potential.

He barely moved towards 2nd on that play and most likely cost the Yankees another run scored ...

apropos of nothing, some Bob Dylan lyrics from "Idiot Wind":

They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy

and when she died it came to me

Mets making it exciting before inevitably losing 5-4.

Edit: 5-3 then. Excitement over.

Apparently Phil Nevin has been playing bad cop in the Yankees dugout. Whatever.

the Nationals Shawn Kelly Designated For Assignment for a glove-throwing temper tantrum after giving up a HR, apparently unhappy that he'd been asked to pitch in a 25-1 game.

Shawn reported that the umpires were rushing him, which led to him surrendering the home run. I mean, he has surrendered plenty of home runs without umpire interference so I don't know what was so special about last night.

Good riddance, I say! Clean out that haggard bullpen full of tired old horses and fill it with young horses who can't pitch any better.
   20. rconn23 Posted: August 01, 2018 at 04:23 PM (#5719250)
That's about the most non competitive game I've seen the Yankees play this year.
   21. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 01, 2018 at 04:34 PM (#5719259)
Shawn reported that the umpires were rushing him,
I would f***ing hope so, in a 25-1 game.

EDIT: Wait...what??? From TFA:
Kelley allowed a home run to Austin Jackson after he had been told to slow down by the plate umpire.
I f***ing hate baseball in 2018.
   22. KronicFatigue Posted: August 01, 2018 at 04:41 PM (#5719264)
Twice in the past week I've seen 1) position players pitching and 2) hitting a batter on an "offspeed" pitch where 3) the batter makes ZERO attempt to avoid the pitch. I know avoiding the pitch is almost never called, but come on, how is it not called in those situations? I hate when batters turn their back to "avoid" a pitch (but in reality are increasing the surface area and decreasing the chance of injury), but at least you can kinda sorta squint and think they didn't have time to avoid the ball. but in these cases, the hitters are practically laughing as the ball is coming in.

Well, that's that, rally killing 3 run homer by Gleyber!
   25. Davo and his Moose Tacos Posted: August 01, 2018 at 05:15 PM (#5719276)
Jose Ramirez currently leads the AL in both homers (32) and steals (25).

He’d be the first player to lead in both categories in like.....86 years, I think? Chuck Klein’s 1932 still the most recent, isn’t it?

That's about the most non competitive game I've seen the Yankees play this year.

Try this one or this one, if you haven't suppressed the memories. That second one has one big thing in common with today's fiasco.

does he lead the Orioles in Wins and ERA?

This an unbelievable inning. Cubs have 4 runs on one ht. Only 1 ball hit out of the infield.

Cubs getting all 1,000 cuts in against the Pirates in the first inning tonight.

4 runs, 3 hits, 2 errors, BB, HBP, WP, 51 pitches. 1 ball hit out of the infield.

IBB in the second inning to anyone but pitcher should *always* come back to bite you.

Especially to Happ - who makes you throw a strike.
   39. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: August 01, 2018 at 08:04 PM (#5719320)
OK, I've never heard of this before. In the first, Baez took off early for 3rd, the pitcher had him dead, but threw the ball into LF. Baez scored. Len is now saying that Baez was charged with a CS. I've never heard of a CS when the runner wasn't put out.
   40. Zonk is a Doppleclapper Posted: August 01, 2018 at 08:05 PM (#5719322)
This game feels like it could easily be 10-1.... or 0-0.
   41. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: August 01, 2018 at 08:07 PM (#5719323)
Would have liked to see Schwarber be a little more patient there. He's hapless against lefties, and the pitcher had just thrown 6 straight balls with the bases loaded.
   42. Zonk is a Doppleclapper Posted: August 01, 2018 at 08:07 PM (#5719327)
Hamels also seems to work fast... which is always nice.

Something like that.

He did the anthem for them recently and the tatoos were distracting during it.

Home plate umpire out of the game. We are an hour and a half in, and it's the top of the third.
   47. Brian C Posted: August 01, 2018 at 08:35 PM (#5719337)
Just saw that Fall Out Boy and Rise Against are playing at Wrigley next month. I wonder if there's a theoretical concert I'd want to see less.

Also, we're an hour and a half into this game and only in the top of the third. It's going well so I'm not complaining, and it's in the Eastern time zone so it probably won't run too absurdly late here in Chicago, but still. I'm not someone who's concerned generally about length of games but this still seems like a ... well, not quite a crime against the game, but at least an affront to it.
   48. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 01, 2018 at 08:39 PM (#5719338)
It's a strange world where pitchers are nibbling and walking against Kole Calhoun with Mike Trout on deck.
   49. cardsfanboy Posted: August 01, 2018 at 08:43 PM (#5719341)
Cardinals posted their first losing July since 2008.... Good thing we fired the manager who has never posted a losing month in July, August or September....

Sonny Boy
"Sonny Gray’s awful day apparently extended to social media.

As the Yankees righthander was struggling through a 7-5 loss to the Orioles on Wednesday, his Twitter account briefly went private. After the account again became available to the public, it appeared that what could be interpreted as a racist tweet had been deleted.

Gray explained the potentially offensive tweet, from 2012, when he was a minor-leaguer in the Oakland Athletics’ system, as an inside joke with a close friend.

“I’m not sure,” when asked whether he had taken his Twitter account private. “I’ve had a lot of issues with that. I’m not even in control of that.”

Gray’s Twitter account has not been updated since Jan. 8, 2013.

It would be nice if I could get one Cardinal broadcast where the broadcasting team would stop begging for weak groundouts from the Cardinals.

I mean they hide their begs by saying "this guy would be better if he didn't strike out so much." which is of course code for "I want the guy to expand the strike zone and slow his swing down to hit weak ass ####### ground balls."

The Cubs have scored 6 runs in 4 innings almost exclusively via weak grounders. Don't knock the weak grounders, man.

were they weak grounders because they were trying for weak grounders or just poor contact on hard swings? That is a huge difference.

Hmmm...off the top of my head - Soulja Boy and whoever does Despacito. Or Maroon 5 and Taylor Swift. Or anything involving the Black Eyed Peas. There are many. That being said, that's also pretty terrible.
   56. cardsfanboy Posted: August 01, 2018 at 09:11 PM (#5719362)
It would be hard to tell this was a baseball broadcast if you were listening to it, it's been about 10 minutes, and there has been maybe three sentences related to baseball, and something related to some other past time. Tiger is involved so it's probably sex olympics or golf, I couldn't tell the difference, kept talking about wet grass...

Does anyone ever try for weak grounders? And if so, why would they still be in the major leagues?

Yes, that is pretty much everyone who complains about players striking out instead of putting the ball in play is arguing for them to try. They might be too stupid to realize that is what they are asking for, but basically complaining about strikeouts instead of putting the ball in play is arguing "expand the strike zone, so that you don't get a called strike(and of course a called ball), and slow the bat speed down so that you have a better shot of ensuring contact"

I'd rather see the Soulja Boy and Despacito guys, although I admit it sounds vaguely tortuous. I dislike Maroon 5 as much as either Fall Out Boy or Rise Against, but I'd much rather see Taylor Swift than either of those two. I'm not a Black Eyed Peas fan, but I'd go to one of their concerts every night for a week before Fall Out Boy/Rise Against.

So I'm afraid you're 0-for-3, sport. But I respect you for giving it the old college try.

Nice but seemingly painful catch by Happ in CF. Watching without sound but maybe just got the wind knocked out of him.
   61. cardsfanboy Posted: August 01, 2018 at 09:20 PM (#5719369)
I seriously do not want to ever hear a Cardinal fan complain about Matheny, Shildt is utter garbage and has the shortest hook of any manager in baseball over the past 30 years. The guy couldn't manage a bullpen if he had peak Eckersley, Hoffman, Gossage, Rivera and Fernando Salas in the pen.... Salas would get the bulk of the high leverage innings.

I guess it's a bit easier to manage in the minors when you have actual decent(relative to league) starters in the pen.
   62. Meatwad Posted: August 01, 2018 at 09:20 PM (#5719370)
Javy is now a 20-20 guy up next 30-30 and an outside chance at 40-40
   63. cardsfanboy Posted: August 01, 2018 at 09:22 PM (#5719371)
Mclaughlin is bending over backwards to argue that pulling Weaver there is the right call....

They took the SB away. Which is fair because it really wasn't one. But then again, neither was his CS.

If there is an error called on the play, then it's up to the scorer discretion to give them a caught stealing. I'm assuming the CS happens more often when the hometown is pitching....

I get the concept. I've just never seen it before. When a guy tries to steal second and the catcher throws the ball into CF, they never score it a CS and an error. It's always a SB.

Can't say for sure if I've seen it or not, I know I've seen caught stealing on errors, but usually then the error is attributed to the fielder not the catcher on the throw.

I love the fact that Yadier is making my argument against him batting 2nd look completely wrong. He's had one gidp since he's been doing that, and is fairly consistently delivering. His overall numbers haven't changed, but they haven't gotten worse either.
   72. cardsfanboy Posted: August 01, 2018 at 09:33 PM (#5719382)
Cardinal announcers "this game has turned on a dime, and that dime was Shildt bringing in Poncedeleon." (and no, I'm not kidding that is almost a verbatim quote from Rick Horton)

For the record, two outs top of the second, men on second and third with the score 2-0 at the time that they pulled Weaver..... Brought in Poncedeleon, got the out then the Cardinals score a run the next inning, and that is when Horton makes his comment...
   73. cardsfanboy Posted: August 01, 2018 at 09:38 PM (#5719385)
Now the Cardinal announcers just went under the table to give Shildt a bj.... "That is his M.O.... being aggressive, it amps up the players juices by being aggressive..." (they are talking about him running the runners with a 3-2 count and one out...something that was pretty normal for the most part the better part of the last decade)

I'm actually starting to think that I hate Fall Out Boy more than you guys. But seriously, have you heard "Centuries"? That's a far more painful listen than "Mambo No. 5".

I've heard of one of those three, and don't hate the one I have heard of... I mean Fall Out Boy is ten times better than some ancient dead scroll like Aerosmith.

I have horrible tastes, so I might end up liking them. I'm the only member on this entire board who doesn't like Pavement..... Add in I do like the Macarena.... (along with the hokey pokey and the duck dance, it's one of three things I know the dance moves to.)

   81. Brian C Posted: August 01, 2018 at 09:52 PM (#5719400)
Like a lot of mega-hits, "Despacito" is too generic sounding to be that hateable.

I saw Aerosmith in concert back, uh ... almost 20 years ago, I guess. 1999? Whatever, they were fine. Not something I need to ever do again, but not at all hateable. They do not have a single song in their catalog as remotely horrible as "Centuries" or "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark" or "Sugar, We're Going Down" or actually any Fall Out Boy song I've ever heard. They are a uniformly terrible band with no output that is even listenable.

Black Eyed Peas seem to balance out really horrible stuff with stuff that's actually not bad for what it is. "Boom Boom Pow" and "Let's Get It Started" are terrible. "Where Is the Love" and "I Gotta Feeling" aren't so bad.

Add in I do like the Macarena.... (along with the hokey pokey and the duck dance, it's one of three things I know the dance moves to.)
There is something objectively wrong with you.

By the way, just so that you guys can calibrate my tastes, I'm listening to and enjoying British Sea Power's Let the Dancers Inherit the Party as I'm typing this.

Plenty, Macarena, Gangnam style is my jam, and Pink Floyd is utter garbage. :) I don't deny it. I like what I like and dislike what I don't like.

No ####, he's a cards fan.

ehh even that I'm different on. Most Cardinal fans are stuck in the 70's.... Aerosmith, Boston(for some ####### reason) are among their gods of music pantheon... And the love for Hagar regardless of whether he was Hagar or screwing up Van Halen has no boundaries in St Louis.

My tastes suck, I admit that. It won't stop me from still admitting them to you all.

And the bottom of the 7th begins, a mere 2 hours and 50 minutes into the game.

omg... this broadcast sycophantic love from the Cardinal announcers is disgustingly bad. I don't think porn movies say as much love for something as McLaughlin and Horton right now are giving Shildt... for basically routine events, doing the exact same thing that has been going on in the previous decade.

You really should not admit that in public.

I hope everyone realizes javy is hitting .303/.336/.577 and is an honest to goodness mvp candidate while also being the most fun player in baseball.

This argument is still going on in St. Louis?

Sammy Hagar is a borderline god in St Louis. (St Louis has a few weird gods... some I like "They Might be Giants"....some I don't understand "21 Pilots" but Hagar owns them all)

I like what I like. I have no problem with that.

I saw a kid at work today wearing a shirt(she was maybe 7 years old) that said "in a world of horses, be a unicorn." later on in the day while her mom was in line waiting to be checked out, she's just randomly dancing in the aisles, not at all to the music on the overhead. And that girl is one of my heroes. Be who you are and don't care about what other people think. This is something I instilled in my nieces and nephews--with their mother's permission, since she was the one who instilled/helped me accept/ it in me....

And oddly, MLB.com live stats have him still at .300 despite going 2-3. All the other players seem to have been updated.

Well, Twenty One Pilots are big in lots of places. They're probably the biggest rock act going these days.

Can you please bring all this Fall Out Boy stuff into the culture thread?

The Black Eyed Peas were actually once a respected alt-rap group. I bought one of their albums, around 2002 or so. Then they hired Fergie in what must be one of the most overt sell-out movies in music history. And good for them, just think about how much money they've made.

No. Fall Out Boy is not culture.

not sure that word means what you think it means... biggest music group maybe, but rock? not really sure how they qualify there, they have some nice ditties, but not really anything you would call rock that gets mainstream play.

That thread has taken off so fast that I didn't even get a chance to read the first page... I would be lost in the morass of that convulted web. I'm a fan of the culture thread, but if you don't participate in it soon enough, you are too many pages behind. (and as admitted by me, I don't have any culture, I like what I like which is pretty much stuff that people around here don't like or it just mirrors their comments on the big stuff....)
   99. Brian C Posted: August 01, 2018 at 10:18 PM (#5719426)
There's a culture thread? Oh yeah, I see it in the sidebar. I'll be damned.

Anyway, Contreras hit a homer. That's cool. Agonizingly long games aren't so agonizing when the Cubs have the game well in hand.

I looked it up and they've had 9 top-10 songs on the Billboard mainstream rock chart, including 3 number ones.

The world's moved on from Van Halen, dog.
