Jacob deGrom vs. Pitchers at the Plate Is the Most Lopsided Matchup of 2018

From article—
That’s one successful sacrifice bunt and an 0-for-33 batting line, with 22 strikeouts and a grand total of three balls hit to the outfield. Collectively, pitchers have recorded a batting average of .000, an on-base percentage of .000, and a slugging percentage of .000.

He’s one of only a handful of pitchers in league history to strike out at least 64 percent of opposing pitcher-hitters in a season, and he already ranks fourth all time in most batters faced (34) with a .000 OPS allowed; Ron Villone (36 in 2001) and Frank Pastore (39 in 1981) are both within reach, while Masato Yoshii (57 in 1998) is likely too far away, as dwindling starter innings in 2018 mean deGrom simply hasn’t faced pitchers frequently enough to catch Yoshii.

Let the DH discussions begin!

I'm more interested in whether this should affect deGrom's WAR or other value measurements. Should beating up on pitchers to an inordinate degree affect a pitcher's value, or is it too small a sample that will wash out over the whole season, or does it not matter?

If only the Mets didn't hit like a gaggle of pitchers every time deGrom took the mound.

The absurdity of deGrom's season has not been getting enough attention. Anyone who hasn't looked at his game log should.

On May 18, deGrom beat the Diamondbacks to improve to 4-0. Since then, he has started 13 games, throwing 95 innings with a K/BB of 104/19 and an ERA of 1.89. His record in that span? 1-7.

What is the best season for a pitcher with a sub .500 record? (for a starter, not reliever). Nolan Ryan lead the league in ERA in Houston in 1987. 8-16 record, 2.76 ERA, 5.4 WAR.

Any others like that?

there were a bunch of dazzling-looking ERA seasons between 1963-68 (especially 1968) by pitchers with losing records.
Bob Veale 1968 2.08 ERA 13-14
Joe Horlen 1968 2.37, 12-14
Horlen 1966 2.43 10-13

and many more

In 1949, Dave Koslo of the Giants led the NL in ERA at 2.50, but had an 11-14 record. He led the league in WHIP & W/9IP, and had a 6.0 WAR.

I found Ben Sheets in 2004 too. 7.2 WAR 12-14 and 2.70 ERA. 162 ERA+

Joe Magrane in 1988 led the league in ERA with 2.18 and finished 5-9--he barely qualified, though, with only 165 IP. His average run support was 2.56

No one who qualified for the ERA title has ever had an ERA+ as good as deGrom's current 206 and finished with a losing record. In 1880, Tim Keefe set the all-time record for ERA (.86) and ERA+ (293). He went 6-6 over 12 games. Everyone else ahead of deGrom had a winning record.

Highest WAR, losing record

Jon Matlack 1974 9.1 13-15
Phil Niekro 1977 8.9 16-20 (deceptive of course because WAR is a counting state--his ERA was 4.03)
Rocket 1996 7.7 10-13
Bump Hadley 1933 7.6 15-20 (see Niekro above)
Dave Roberts 1971 7.4 14-17
