Japanese team won’t extend Valentine’s contract after 2009

It’s a wrap…

The Chiba Lotte Marines have decided not to offer Bobby Valentine a contract extension after his current four-year deal expires at the end of 2009 season, the former New York Mets manager said Sunday.

“They just wanted to go in a different direction,” said Valentine. “They wanted to change things and I certainly understand that.”

The 58-year-old Valentine guided the Marines to the franchise’s first Japan Series championship in 31 years in 2005 and became a fan favorite, but the team missed the playoffs with a fourth-place finish this season.

Of all the candidates shown in the papers, only one puzzles me. Anybody have any idea who the guy with the lens-less glasses, the bulbous nose & the funny little mustache is?

Wait, so he already knows he'll be gone after 2009 but they are still bringing him back? That's interesting, people in US sports abhor "lame-duck" managers/coaches, to the extent that most teams will give a contract extension to a guy they know they are likely going to fire in order to avoid that situation. Maybe Japanese teams don't worry as much about the power balance between players and coaches.
