Japan’s oldest baseball club in turmoil at top

An in-depth look at turmoil that has hit the Yomiuri Giants. Let’s just say this: It involves GMs suing, the corporate owners beings called tyrants and all of that fun stuff.

A high-profile mudslinging battle is raging at the very top of Japan's oldest and arguably most popular professional baseball club

Arguably most popular? Is there any doubt that the Giants are the most popular team in Japan?

I'm not especially knowledgable but I assume that the Giants are similar to the Yankees as both the most popular and most hated team in the sport in their respective countries. Depending on how much you ding them for the hated aspect of it perhaps another team is more "popular."

More likely it was just a writer avoiding making a blanket statement without being able to verify it.

#2 - I believe that something like 50% of the country supports the Giants. The Yankees are not a good equivalent.

I think I read that the Yankees aren't so much the Giants' equivalent so much as they are the Yankees and Red Sox combined.

The Giants, often called "the New York Yankees of Japan" for their nationwide fan base and historical achievements, have won the Japan Series title 21 times, but have not added to their trophy cupboard since 2009.

Man, tough crowd.

Kiyotake built his career as a hard-hitting city news reporter for the newspaper, covering police and tax administration beats.

In 2004, he became the Giants' "kyudan daihyo" (club representative), a post equal to general manager in US major league terms.
I'm trying to imagine Jimmy Breslin, or the Los Angeles Times reporters who recently exposed the corrupt dealings in the suburb of Bell, becoming GM of the Yankees or Dodgers.
