[Javier] Lopez, Giants agree to two-year contract

Hey, that’s more than Javy Lopez got for 57 homers and two All-Star games!

The Giants have agreed to a two-year, $8.5 million contract with reliever Javier Lopez, who will receive $4.25 million per in 2012 and ‘13.

The deal, first reported by The Associated Press on Sunday afternoon, has yet to be officially announced by the team.

Since coming to San Francisco via a trade from the Pirates during the Giants’ 2010 World Series championship run, Lopez has posted a 7-2 record and a 2.38 ERA in 97 appearances. This season, he registered a 2.72 ERA while averaging 6.8 strikeouts per nine innings—numbers that were going to make him a popular option on the open market.

I see we wasted no time finding out this year's Joaquin Benoit.

EDIT: Well, Lopez signed for a year less for a million+ less a year than Benoit. But it's still more than I thought he'd get, and it'll set the tone for the rest of the middle relievers.

They also exercise Jeremy Affeldt's $5M option. If I squint real hard, I can see why they'd want to be sure to keep one of them, but both? I don't get it, unless they're planing pretty serious payroll hike (which would fly in the face of all the rumors surrounding Neukum's ouster).

Why not?

Well, that saves the Yankees from adding him to their collection of oft-injured/not-very-good lefty relievers (Marte! Feliciano! Logan!)

Isn't 6.8 K/9 sort of crappy for a $4 million reliever???

Yup, it is sort of crappy. And his 4.4 BB/9 is definitely crappy.

His shiny results are based on allowing zero HR and a 77.5% strand rate. His xFIP is 3.94.

Really dumb signing.

don't forget about the fact that he usually only pitches to a batter or two, and often comes into the game with outs already recorded.

And that he's a lefty specialist who pitches half his inning in the park that's the toughest in baseball for lefties to hit it out of.

Yeah this is a bad signing. I don't think hes superfluous with Affeldt though. Affeldt has had very little platoon split over his career.

You don't have to sell me this is the idiotic signing of the off-season. SOLD!

I'd start cooking my own food. Or at least try a professional.

With any other team I would have assumed the reliever, not former catcher. But with the Giants I wasn't sure.

Don't all Red Sox players just have fried chicken delivered to the clubhouse?
