Jays’ McDonald not debating demotion

Hey…it’s not like he trumped Mark Belanger’s 1970 Triple Crown loser season….1—36—.218

It is his own fault, he says. Yes, the Jays shunted him aside by signing a veteran shortstop, David Eckstein, and a utility infielder, Marco Scutaro. But the way McDonald sees it, he paved the way for his own demotion.

“I hit .250,” he said. “I mean, this is the big leagues. Things don’t get handed to you. People look and say, ‘He played pretty well, he played good defensively, I like him, he’s a nice guy. But he hit .250.’ “

“A lot of the disappointment lies in myself for not playing better last year, for not hitting for a higher average, being more selective at the plate,” he said yesterday before going 1-for-2 against the Phillies. “I felt like I took care of what I wanted to do defensively, but my offensive capabilities have still got a ways to go. That’s where the disappointment lies.”

He admits he loves playing defence, perhaps to a fault.

“I think I took so much pride in my defence that I allowed my offence to not matter as much, which is the wrong approach,” he said. “I know I’ve carved out my own niche defensively, and I’m going to make sure that doesn’t go anywhere, but I also need to raise up my offence.”

I think I like the Minister of Defence.

It must be hard to be that self aware as an athelete. I know we get on people for thinking they can still play after their prime, but what's the alternative?

The whole article is terrific in terms of what he's said. So good in fact I'm sure agents are emailing it to their clients to ring off parts when things don't go their way. The part at the end in regards to finishing 2nd or 3rd is great.

Given how many groundballers the Jays have I think the Eckstein deal was very bad. The Jays would be just as well off imo starting McDonald for Halladay, Burnett, McGowan, and Janssen/Litsch with him having his day off and Scutaro getting playing time when Marcum is pitching.

Part of the Eckstein deal is lineup construction (to the extent you believe in such things). The Jays need someone with a decent OBP to bat leadoff. I think McDonald is going to get lots of playing time later in games as the Jays have a decent bench and can use the Stairs/Stewart/Johnson platoon to do lots of double-switches later in games to minimize McDonald's bat while maximizing his glove. I expect a lot of shuffling (even at catcher).

I like the idea of a lineup that will change during the game - it gets the Jays back to their 1985 roots.

Why not just use Aaron Hill leading off? Hill 2B, Rios RF, Wells CF, Thomas DH, Overbay 1B, Rolen 3B, Lind LF, Zaun C, Johnny Mac SS.

Save what was paid to Eckstein and put it towards whoever they'll end up paying to replace AJ Burnett in the off-season.

FWIW: Hill has a career OBP of .341, just entering his prime. Eckstein has a career OBP of .351, clearly exiting his prime.
