J.D. first to win 2 Silver Sluggers in same year

BOSTON—J.D. Martinez had such an impressive offensive season that he pulled off an unprecedented feat on Thursday, becoming the first player to win American League Silver Slugger Awards at two positions in the same season.

The right-handed-hitting masher, who helped the Red Sox win the World Series, received Silver Slugger Awards at designated hitter and outfielder.

The announcement came just three days after many were stunned when Martinez was not selected as one of the top three finalists for the AL Most Valuable Player Award, which will be announced next Thursday.

Well, there has to be a first for everything….

I'd love to complain about how stupid this is, and there probably was a better outfield selection, but Martinez genuinely mashed in his 57 games there. It's hard to say that Mitch Haniger (or whoever) got robbed.

It's pretty stupid.

This may prompt some redrafting of bonus clauses now that the multiple award window has opened.

I always thought that Nicolas Cage should have won Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for Adaptation.

I always thought that Nicolas Cage should have won Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for Adaptation.

Barry Fitzgerald was nominated for both in Going My Way. He only won Best Supporting Actor, and then the Academy changed the rules to where a performance had to be in one or the other. Spoilsports.

Janet Gaynor won the 1st Best Actress Oscar for her work in three films in ‘29: “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and Murnau’s “Sunrise.”
