Jeff Francoeur to Be Braves New TV Analyst

Joe Simpson is going to be (mostly) out as the TV analyst and will be shifted to radio. In the TV booth next to Chip Caray for most games: Jeff Francoeur.

...

Simpson has made some unwelcome headlines in the past few years for some comments that raised eyebrows. This past season he implied that Nationals outfielder Juan Soto was lying about his age. He also, strangely, criticized Chase Utley for taking batting practice in a t-shirt, calling it unprofessional.

Much like Delta Airlines, Francoeur’s career has had many ups and downs. He’s only 34.

I'm guessing he'll be fantastic for the first month.

He seems to be incredibly well liked and as noted his career had some extreme highs and lows which should give him insight into what a player is experiencing. Whether or not he can use that experience to express it remains to be seen but I won't be shocked if he's very good.

"Acuna got down the line in a hurry on that one. He was flying...as if he was on Delta Airlines."

Or...

Caray: And, low and outside to Swanson, ball four, so he'll take his base...

Francoeur: <stunned silence for a moment>

Francouer: I have no idea what just happened there.

I'm shocked he's only 34.

I put Francoueoeuouer in the same bin as I initially put Michael Morse: looks like a fun, likeable guy who would probably be a good color commentator. I was disabused of that notion when Mikey sat in for Ray Knight a few times this past season on MASN; mostly pablum mixed in with a few humorous or curious anecdotes of interest to long-time Nats fans. Jeffy could be good, or he could just be a warm body to make the VU meter bump when his partner has nothing to say.

Did someone actually use the words "insight" and Francouer in the same sentence?

It happened all the time when he was an active player. "Francoeur might be better if he could just stop himself from swinging at every pitch insight."

This is going to be Joe Simpson's 28th year broadcasting for the Braves. Skip Caray and Pete Van Wieren did for 33 years each, but somehow Simpson doesn't feel like a mainstay the way they did.

Well played, Baldrick. I came here to make the same comment...more or less.

I don't know how Frenchy is going to do. For a while they had active (or maybe it was just retired?) players doing guest spots, like, sitting in for a few innings. A few of them - Al Leiter I remember - were fantastic. Interesting and insightful, and they told you things about the game that only players are going to know. And then the guys that they actually hire are John Smoltz and crew. Here's hoping that Frenchy is more Leiter than Smoltz.

There's little chance he won't suck.

Isn't Jeff as dumb as a pack of puppies?

Jesus, Joe Simpson on radio? At least on TV one could focus on the pictures instead of his drivel.

That's strange? Really?

They were some sort of cancer awareness shirts that were being sold and it was a one time thing. The way he did it was bizarre too. He basically stopped calling the game, had the booth call up video, and then went on a 20 minute rant about it, repeatedly asking the booth to call up the video every time they took it down for the actual game happening in front of them.

edit to add: also, bizarrely, his main argument was that fans coming to see batting practice wouldn't be able to tell who was hitting if they weren't wearing jerseys. Every team has BP jerseys now and almost none have names or numbers, which is kind of a reach since I'm pretty sure the BP session was closed.

Some of ya'll seem to have missed that Francoeur called a lot of Braves games last year. He's no more insightful than Joe. So none. But he does seem to still enjoy baseball, talking about baseball, and breathing air. All things Joe Simpson has long since lost his passion for.
