Jerome Williams’ perseverance pays off for Angels

Bring it Jerome!

Last June, Jerome Williams was ready to give up baseball.

Players have those kinds of thoughts when their careers fall into a tailspin, as Williams’ had in 2011. All the promise he showed as a 21-year-old kid dissolved into one last chance with an independent league team, the Lancaster Barnstormers.

“I was basically one game away from calling it quits,” said Williams, 30. “I just took the time to say, I’ve got to do it.”

His comeback is nothing short of amazing. Now a starter in the Angels’ rotation, Williams pitched a three-hit shutout against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday at Angel Stadium — his first shutout since 2003 when he was a phenom with the San Francisco Giants.

...“I learned the game. Instead of relying on stuff, now I’m relying on what I need to do to be a pitcher: location, the strike zone, different pitches, different mindset. Back then, I was young. I didn’t want to listen to nobody, I wanted to throw the ball by everybody. But now I’m a pitcher.”

He'll always be linked in my mind with Kurt Ainsworth.

It is cool to see him have a second career. I always liked him as a prospect.

And Damian Moss and Jesse Foppert.

Bud Smith, Brandon Duckworth...all the pitching prospects of the early aughts!

I saw Duckworth pitching a few weeks ago. He looked to my eye like he could pitch at the major league level. He could certainly pitch better than Vicente Padilla.

yeh, jerome certainly fell off a cliff - i know i've seen his name briefly every couple years or so - with the cubs i remember - but i'm glad he has been able to put it together and i'm glad that a team gave him a chance.

interesting that teams will often give a chance to an "old" pitcher but not to an "old" hitter even though it would barely cost them anything

I recall Jerome being somewhat hefty, and I always root for hefty players...

I think this is the third or fourth Jerome Williams comeback story I've seen linked here.

I like Jerome, but I sort of doubt that this is the time that he returns to form. Who knows, though.

You confuse me. What form are you talking about? The guy who was a good prospect almost a decade ago or the guy who wasn't good enought to pitch MLB from 2006-2010?

What Jerome Williams is right now is a pretty good pitcher, going by his record this year, last year, and also his 2011 minor league performance in extreme hitters parks. How long he can stay a good pitcher, I have no idea.

I was just listing all the Giants pitching prospects of 2003!

Travis Ishikawa

Eddy Martinez-Esteve

Merkin Valdez

At the very least, failed Giants prospects have interesting names.

I'd guess its more opportunities because regular starting pitchers get hurt, and its hard to find 5 effective pitchers.

I would like Albert Pujols' perseverance to pay off, too.
