Certainly a priority.

That sculpture is the only thing the team has going for it.

Philistines.

It has grown on me and I actually like it now.

No, sorry. You bought the team, you should have to live with that abomination for at least 10 years. Besides it only moves when a Marlin's player hits a homer, really how often is that going to happen at home this year? Maybe 65 if they are lucky.

These are all just dubious anonymous rumors! Saint Jetes wouldn't do it.

He's gonna trade it to the Yanks for Scooter's plaque from monument park.

Why did Jeter even sign up for all of this? Should have done something with the Yankees. The Marlins situation is hopeless.

Jetes is the turk. And a bad one.

Can anyone find the BTF thread about that thing when it was first built? Someone asked how gay it was and Sam M. waxed particularly eloquent.

Looking at the sculpture, I can see why Jeter wants to get rid of it. It has more range to it's left than he did.
   12. Bote Man Posted: January 17, 2018 at 02:21 AM (#5607819)
Uhhh, it's not Jeter's to do with as he pleases. It is the property of the taxpayers of Dade County and the State of Florida. Now, if he wants to pay to have it moved to a prominent public space and pay for its ongoing maintenance and upkeep, that would be fine by me. Or he can just sit on it and tell them to activate it, enjoy the ride.

This is really interesting. The article does a nice job of laying out why the Marlins can't just blow the thing up or ship it to Yankee Stadium.
   14. Lassus Posted: January 17, 2018 at 08:35 AM (#5607839)
or ship it to Yankee Stadium.

If I had won the MegaMillions, sacrificing every penny to ensure it would be in Speer Stadium until the sun burned out would probably be worth it.

Ftfa

The stadium itself is county property, and so is the sculpture — purchased as part of an Art in Public Places program that requires builders of county-owned buildings to install art works for the public.

Oh boy, I didn't know this.

So this thing is Loria's #### you response to the fact that he was required to install "Art" by virtue of having the stadium be publicly funded?

What a guy...

Snark aside, I really like the stadium and the doohickey, at least as I can judge from TV. Also, if I ignore the circumstances of their existence.

Eh, it fits. A joke sculpture for a joke franchise.

SABR had their annual convention in Miami two years ago so I had a chance to go to Marlins Park. It very much depends on your mood but I decided that Marlins Park was more "delightfully cheesy" than "over-the-top tacky". It's uniquely Miami, which I like. And the home run sculpture is probably its greatest feature. Certainly, the highlight of the game I attended was Christian Yelich's home run to set the thing in motion.

The home run sculpture is good. The park may have been a colossal waste of money but at least A) it's public property, not completely handed over to billionaires as a gift B) it's uniquely Miami.

And that thread is still open for comments!

I'll leave it to someone else to resurrect it.

it's public property, not completely handed over to billionaires as a gift

The gift is how the billionaires control the scheduling, use, and revenue of the "public" property without having to pay any property tax on it. All the perks of private ownership with none of the obligations.

He could probably hollow it out and stick a love nest/gift basket storage area in there.

What a place to watch the games from, assuming you had any interest in watching the Marlins, which Jeter clearly doesn't.

Not sure what he's looking for as a replacement art piece, but word is that he has a long-time teammate, a Miami native, who would be glad to get him a lovely sculpted statue of a Centaur.
   24. McCoy Posted: January 19, 2018 at 03:27 PM (#5609726)
So what does it look like in video games?

That sounds about right. They hit 96 at home last year, but 53 of those came from Stanton and Ozuna.

Or for hot Miami days, a shower station like they have at Comiskey. Sponsored by Jorge Posada.
