Jezspin: What’s Your Baseball Walk-Up Song?

The best part about attending a baseball game is eating a hot dog or three and drinking an overpriced beer while wearing a baseball hat and yelling at millionaires. The second best part is listening to the walk-up music—10 to 15 second snippets of songs the baseball men have chosen as their motivational inspiration to hit the ball and run like their pantaloons are on fire.

I’d need a rotation of clips set to different game scenarios, but I strongly recommend reading the comments for much better suggestions than the actual staff of Jezebel and Deadspin offer.

I have so many thoughts on this topic. Right now the best player/song mix might be Xander Bogaerts and DMX's X Gon Give It To Ya.

Hmmm, I was a really bad player with limited musical tastes and growing long in the tooth ... maybe an old Jimmy Buffett song "I can't be your hero today."

Mets fans like the "Friends" theme song used for Wilmer Flores because as a teenager he says that's how he learned to speak English.

Charlie Blackmon has been using "Your Love" by the Outfield for years now, which always seemed an odd choice. But it has become a crowd pleaser, where the PA cuts off the chorus, but the crowd finishes it.

I wonder how he chose it. That song was came out the year he was born.

Perhaps it's a womb thing -- he was conceived to it.

Maybe Blackmon's mom just thought it would be better than explaining it was actually Stevie Wonder's Part Time Lover and all the messiness to go with that.

I'd walk up top the opening riff of "Sweet Child of Mine" which is odd because I'm not much a of a GnR fan.

Gotta think outside the batter's box. No pitcher could ever possibly concentrate after hearing a batter walk up to the plate with this song, so it'd be serving a double purpose.

To really confuse the pitcher, make him expect a song but then give him a picture of Madeleine Albright.

Jayson Werth used to come out to the Game of Thrones theme, which was pretty entertaining

I assumed it was because it was by the Outfield.

We did this for a softball league about 15-20 years ago. Most of the 30-ish crowd chose beat box dance tunes, I chose "Nuclear Burn" by Brand X since it has a really good bass solo at the beginning and would get me psyched up. However, our DJ couldn't (or wouldn;t) find that one, so for me he subbed in the theme from the Grinch.

I believe Austin Hedges with the Padres comes up to Careless Whisper. Everything else is a distant second.

I tried to get my son to use "Closing Time" when he comes in from the pen, though Cell Block Tango might fit more with his HBP rate (he hit one of his own catchers playing for another team in his summer league, who should have known better). I know he picked a song at some point, but I've yet to see him pitch live in college, and I'm not sure they actually play anything for the pitchers at any rate.

I've always said "Hair of the Dog" would be my walkup music. Other songs might work, but that was always a power song for me. (Steppenwolf Born to Be Wild was another)

Anywhere if you tip the guy enough.

It takes about a minute to create a loop anywhere of any track, so there is no reason why they wouldn't play a walk up song from a point that you asked them to.
   35. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 06, 2018 at 08:34 PM (#5721986)
Some players are missing an opportunity to promote themselves, rather than a musician who may appeal to them but not necessarily the fans in attendance. For example, Steven Souza, Jr. would attract more notice if he marched to the plate to the tunes of his homophonic predecessor. If he ever makes the majors, this guy could attract a lot of notice with the right music. After all, the goal is for everyone to know your name.

Born To Be Wild was my psych up song before wrestling matches in HS. I had to borrow a teammate's Walk Man and it was always sweaty after he used it.

It almost got 20 seconds, but I decided it was terrible before it got there. Probably the worst song I've heard this year.
   42. Walt Davis Posted: August 07, 2018 at 02:25 AM (#5722126)
Coltrane's "Ascension" -- all 40ish minutes of it. Maybe by then the pitcher will have thrown enough warm-up pitches he'll have forgotten how to throw above 55 MPH. I still couldn't catch up to it but I'd look less ridiculous. And nearly everyone will have left the ballpark cuz even I don't want to hear that distorted through ballpark speakers at excruciating volumes so nobody will see me embarrass myself except my teammates who will be blaming the GM anyway.

Alternatively, I'm pretty sure there's (at least) one Sonny Rollins' solo that quotes take me out to the ballgame. (No, I do not want Branford's insipid version from Burns's insipid documentary.)

And I always mention the time when the Mets greeted Chipper with "Me and Mrs Jones" during some of his troubles.

"Your Love" by The Outfield doesn't exactly depict a healthy, loving relationship either.

In reality I would probably obnoxiously change my walk-up song all the time, carefully choosing in order to telegraph how cool I am. Today's choice: Ty Segall
