Baseball doesn’t have to be the most important thing in a player’s life but it should be one of the most important things in his life. Remember last year, when then Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett put it out there that baseball isn’t the most important thing in his life?
Not everyone in baseball thinks that way.
Case in point: Tigers manager Jim Leyland. For all he has accomplished in baseball — 21 seasons as a big league manager, including a World Series championship with the 1997 Florida Marlins — Leyland still thinks this stuff is pretty important.
“Just because you’re fortunate to be on a team that won one, I think that’s why you want another one,” Leyland said yesterday, before his Tigers met the San Francisco Giants in Game 1 of the World Series at AT&T Park. “You realize how good the feeling is, and obviously that’s why you’d like to have another one, be a part of another world championship.
