Jimmy Fund Telethon

Over the span of 36 hours and two Boston Red Sox games, this broadcast will feature compelling stories from Dana-Farber patients, doctors, researchers and nurses, celebrity guests and athletes, inspiring people all over the world to contribute to Dana-Farber’s lifesaving mission.

The Red Sox do a lot of things that frustrate me as a fan but every year this fund raiser is something that makes me proud.  This is a great cause.

First time I ever heard of the Jimmy Fund was when it was known that for a contribution by check of a dollar or more, Ted Williams would personally endorse it with his real signature, not a stamp. I wonder how many of those cancelled checks are sitting in Boston's attics today.

the "Jimmy" of the Fund was 12 in 1948 when it started.

he died too soon - but not WAY too soon, of a stroke at age 65 in 2001.

those who are angry with Shoeless Joe Jackson's batting in Field of Dreams may object to this kid living so long, but I for one am good with this fact.
:)

They were just under 1.7 million last night when the game ended.

$2,018,287 as of now, according to WEEI.com.

I don't want to take anything away from the telethon and/or the Jimmy Fund, but while we're on the subject of fighting cancer...

The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) arranges for bone marrow transplants and stem cell donation, mostly to save lives of people with blood cancers like lymphoma or leukemia. The first step in possibly saving someone's life is to get tested, which you can do online or at a local drive. In 1991 I underwent a simple blood test that added me to their registry. These days they do a less invasive swab inside your cheek.

Early last year - 25 years after I was tested - it was determined that I was the best match for a woman with acute myelogenous leukemia, a condition in which the body produces abnormal white blood cells that interfere with the production of red blood cells. Wikipedia says it “progresses rapidly and is typically fatal within weeks or months if left untreated.” In April of last year I did a stem cell donation, at a time when she had maybe a couple of days left to live. I got a call about ten days ago and learned that the recipient of my stem cells is in full remission.

Go kick cancer's ass. Join the donor registry. Give to the Jimmy Fund. Find some other way to help.

Just got through posting a get-well-soon graphic on a co-worker's FB page; she had surgery yesterday for what appears to be cervical cancer, though the doctor isn't positive about the variety ... or at least he wasn't before removing it. She had to have several inches of colon removed as well & is being tested to make sure no cancerous cells have made it to her lymph or stomach cells. All this at roughly 45. Her mother died of something somewhat similar, though I don't know at what age, but apparently fear of going down the same road kept her from keeping tabs on things. Not smart, but all too understandable.

OK, apparently I've been confusing this fund with the V Foundation for many, many years.
