My biggest bullpen hope -- well, team-wise of course, I hope Davis stays healthy and effective and Rondon is over the slump/arm problems that wrecked his last couple months -- is that CJ Edwards gets used in more high pressure situations.

I think that he's the closer of the future. Assuming Davis departs after this year - I would imagine the hope would be Rondon is back to being highly effective, so he's probably first in line to be the backend anchor in 2018 (his last arb year) - but I would suspect he walks after that.

I do wish the Cubs had a better LOOGY option, but as TFA notes - both Strop and Grimm have pretty good track records handling LHBs, so it's not a huge concern.

Any time you're leaning on a couple guys who had worrying injury issues the previous year (Rondon and Davis) and a 42 yo (Uehara), there's risk of course... but a nucleus of Davis/Rondon/Strop/Uehara/Edwards/Grimm has the potential to be a really good bullpen.

Maddon must've read that piece about Andrew Miller being the future's past of relief pitching???

I'm picturing Maddon as Dennis Hopper in Speed.

"Pop quiz, hotshot. Runner on 3rd, 6th inning, none out, tie game, pull-hitting lefty up. What do you do? What do you do?"

Shoot the umpire.

is that CJ Edwards gets used in more high pressure situations.
Every situation will be low-pressure compared to his most recent one...

The headline seems to imply a much greater change in usage than is actually discussed in the article.

Rondon will be used in numerous situations, from perhaps sharing eighth-inning duties with Uehara based on matchups to even closing games when Davis has worked on consecutive days.

Nothing too crazy there and the writer still refers to an "eighth-inning" job. Just with that many possibly good relievers, a team is going to be able to use them in high leverage situations, but that doesn't mean the 7th-8th-9th inning formula is being blown up.

Was there ever any clear indication as to what the problem was with Rondon? It just seemed mysterious since he was so good before.

Yeah, Maddon's not been particularly creative in terms of bullpen usage so far. If anything, his LaRussitis gets triggered pretty easily.

So who breaks camp?

Lester
Arrieta
Hendricks
Lackey
Montgomery

Anderson
Grimm
Strop
Edwards
Uehara
Rondon
Davis

?

Leaving...

Contreras
Rizzo
Zobrist
Bryant
Russell
Schwarber
Almora
Heyward

Baez
Jay
Montero
LaStella
Szczur

Feel like I'm forgetting someone...

Eddie Butler?

Will they break with 8 relievers, since the starters won't likely be allowed to go super deep the first couple of weeks? Or is that offset enough by the usually larger number of off days?

8 relievers means La Stella goes to Iowa? More drama? Szczur has no more option years.

Spamming my thoughts...

Yeah, Maddon's not been particularly creative in terms of bullpen usage so far. If anything, his LaRussitis gets triggered pretty easily.

He rightfully managed the pen differently during the season - especially when it really didn't matter that much, and the playoffs. He also was too aggressive in the playoffs, so I think it's wrong to accuse him of being too rigid.

Was there ever any clear indication as to what the problem was with Rondon? It just seemed mysterious since he was so good before.

Forearm injury. He clearly wasn't 100% after he came back. Hopefully, the offseason did him good, but we'll see.

I won't rule it out (esp in the first week or two of frequent off days) but I doubt Szczur and Almora will be on the roster together very often this year. But maybe Joe will be comfy with 7 relievers most of the year (not that there's a great choice for #13 anyway).

I think it's wrong to accuse him of being too rigid.

I wasn't aware I had accused him of anything. I said he doesn't do anything particularly innovative in bullpen usage (he doesn't) and that, if anything, he's big on matchups. Wood had 18 1-BF and 5 2-BF appearances and roughly 50/50 R/L for the season. It seems unusual to me for a RHR (maybe it isn't) but Grimm had 12 1-BF and 6 2-BF outings. All told, the Cubs had 174 GR of less than 3 outs out of 503 GR compared with the NL average of 155 out of 534. (<3 outs is the closest easy available b-r stat.)

None of that is wrong (and Grimm in particular was awesome in those short outings) but it's pretty standard, LaRussa-style usage.

Rondon is getting lit up in the WBC right now. It's ugly.

I do wish the Cubs had a better LOOGY option

After 108 years Cub fans finally get to whinge about the pithyness of not having a good LOOGY option. Yes, it was a long f*cking wait.

Your team is good. No team is perfect, I get that. But geez, your team is really good.
