Joe Musgrove gives up six runs in second Grapefruit League start | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Musgrove *looks* like he has the stuff to be effective.

“My ball just didn’t have anything on it,” Musgrove said. “I had a hard time breaking 92 [mph] out there. But I feel good. I don’t feel like I’m hanging it all right now. I feel like I had another inning in me, or two.”

Manager Clint Hurdle agreed with Musgrove’s assessment.

“The two-seamer, when it was down, was really good,” Hurdle said. “The fastball command overall was probably inconsistent. I thought he used his cutter very well today. Pitches were elevated at times.”

I always feel like I have another terrible inning in me.

Ivan Nova has 160 major league starts, more than the rest of the Pirate rotation combined (Kuhl 45, Taillon 43, Williams 26, Musgrove 25). I was figuring that at some point they'd pick up a veteran trying to reestablish himself as a hedge against free fall if some of the kids go backward instead of forward, but it looks like the backup plan is more of the same (Brault and Glasnow).

Is Scott Feldman hurt? Cuz that's like his specialty.

Scott Feldman will have you know that he has been a team's Opening Day starter on multiple occasions, thankyouverymuch.

That's what I'm saying, he's exactly the "veteran trying to reestablish himself" that the Pirates need. He played that role splendidly on the 2013 Cubs. That led to his big contract with the Astros where he was the official "stabilizing veteran presence" but found himself back as a "veteran trying to reestablish himself" with the Reds last year, again doing a fine job but having the bad idea of hurting himself.

I'm hoping he's at least the next Brett Tomko.
