Joe Ortiz breaks foot after being hit by a motorcycle

Er, um, it was a pickup basketball game.

Lefthanded reliever Joe Ortiz has, according to the beat guys on Twitter, suffered a broken foot after being hit by a motorcycle in Venezuela.  He has had surgery, and will be out for about three months, which eliminates him from consideration for the Opening Day roster.

Ortiz was not likely to be in the major league pen to start the season, with Neal Cotts in place, Robbie Ross likely to stay in the bullpen, and Michael Kirkman out of options, but we said that he wasn’t likely to make the team last year, too, and he made the team anyway.  This reduces the amount of bullpen depth the Rangers will have in April, though if Ortiz comes back healthy, this shouldn’t be an issue long-term.

I think what everybody really wants to know is how this affects the chances of David Ortiz getting a new multi-year deal.
