Joel Peralta Ejected Due To Foreign Substance

PeraltaVista search!

Joel Peralta is a valuable setup guy for the Rays, and Tuesday night, he was asked to protect a 5-4 lead over the Nationals in the eighth inning. He warmed up, he took the mound, he warmed up some more, and then ... he didn’t pitch. Davey Johnson came out of the Nationals’ dugout and asked the umpires to inspect Peralta’s glove. The umpires inspected Peralta’s glove, confiscated it, and ejected him from the game.

...Interestingly, Peralta spent the 2010 season with the Nationals, so it’s possible a former teammate decided to use this moment to take advantage of old knowledge. That is, if Peralta used a foreign substance in 2010. This could also be a coincidence.

I was at tonight's game with a friend and we found out what had transpired thanks to a Colin Wyers Tweet. At first we figured there was an injury to Peralta but couldn't figure out why the trainer hadn't accompanied Maddon to the mound.

I think that has got to break an unwritten rule if that is what actually went down. If you are willing to let someone cheat for you then you have to be willing to let them cheat against you.

This isn't the first time the Nats have done this. Frank Robinson got an Angel thrown out of a game years ago using inside knowledge.

Kilgore suspected in another Tweet that it was one of the Nats coaches (Jewett?) who had been at Triple-A Syracuse with Peralta in '10 that spilled the beans.

Carlos Pena seemed pretty ticked about it in a postgame interview.

I'm disappointed though that Maddon showed an unusual lack of imagination in having the umpires inspect the glove of the Nationals pitcher in the next inning. If you're going to do that then it makes far more sense to try to disrupt Strasburg in tomorrow's game.

This just gets more and more interesting:

@illumiNats: Joel Peralta also pitched in the infamous 6/14/2005 #Nats #Angels game that Brendan Donnelly was ejected for pine tar http://t.co/Am1LHyRD

Who needs the Roger Clemens trial? We've got PineTarGate II baby!!

Maddon's close to doing a 180 in people's eyes* with his actions/statements in the last few weeks

It probably happened only last week, but when was the last time somebody got tossed for this?

I mean we've got Dickey doing a Wilbur Wood impersonation, I'd love for the new Gaylord Perry to pop up.

I think a better unwritten rule is, if you cheated FOR a team, and they know your tricks (why?), and now you're pitching against them, don't cheat until AFTER they've inspected your glove.

I remembered that Julian Tavarez got tossed for this*, and it looks like it was 2004. I don't know if anyone's been thrown out since then.

* You can probably find any possible reason for an ejection and Tavarez, at some point, met the criteria.

Same here. I think Maddon may be paying to much attention to his own press. He's in danger of becoming the next Bobby Valentine: a self-parodic clown.

Aside from the aforementioned Tavarez, it happened to Brendan Donnelly in 2005.

Also <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090924&c>here's Dave Duncan</a> making inflammatory and/or cowardly accusations against Bronson Arroyo, and Arroyo's manager retorting by reminding us of Duncan's long association with Tavarez and Steve Kline.
