Johnny Damon excited to join Indians

3000 hits to the head.

Johnny Damon is leaving one team and readying to join another—the Cleveland Indians.

As for the team he’s leaving, the 38-year-old Damon played in a soccer game on Wednesday night before sending word that he expects to sign with the Indians soon. While a deal seems imminent, there is not yet an agreement in place.

“Cleveland has always been great to me,” Damon texted CBSSports.com Insider Jon Heyman. “And I’m looking forward to reuniting with teammates.”

Former teammate Derek Lowe is currently on the Indians roster.

...According to a tweet from FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal, Damon will have a full no-trade clause and an out clause in his contract with Cleveland that allows him to leave the team on a specified date after Grady Sizemore returns. Sizemore is not eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list until June 3.

Why does Damon hate Sizemore?

"Listen, Sizemore, there's only room on this roster for one former star who occasionally fakes center field."

I think the idea is that if Grady returns, Brantley moves to left and Damon rides the pine. The out clause allows him to find a better situation for himself elsewhere, and allows the Dolans to not have to pay him.

Well, yes. Sizemore better sleep with one eye open.

I can see it now: "Sizemore out for season with blurred vision after sleeping with one eye open."

Can someone explain why Juan Pierre is leading off for the Phillies while Damon went unsigned? There's been so much pissing and moaning about the offense here in Philly (it's borderline panic, regardless of last night's win), signing Damon was a no-brainer for me. Yes, he's no All-Star, but he's a good bit better than Pierre and would come highly motivated (i.e., he wants his 3,000 hits). Saying "Well, when Howard comes back, Mayberry would move to LF..." isn't a good reason not to do it, as Damon could well be on par with Mayberry (granted, as a LHB).

TE, in a symbol, $.

The Phils are behaving as if they are trying to stay under the cap this year. The trade of Wilson Valdez for a nothing LH reliever to save 500/600K when your replacements are the 1 tool/0 skills Michael "MiniMart" Martinez or the 1 tool/1 skill Pete Orr, points to a close concern for $.

EDIT: The trade of Valdez with a starting infield of Faberge eggs, that is.

Is this a unique clause? I have never heard of an in-season opt-out clause except for veterans who can opt-out if not called up from the minors by a certain date.

I love that every time Damon joins a new team, he finds angles to praise some aspect of the organization.

Tigers, 2010: "This is where I wanted to be from Day 1," he said at the microphone. "I'm sorry it took so long."

Rays (and Manny Ramirez), 2011: "We wanted this to happen ever since my departure from Boston years ago," said Damon, who played with the Yankees from 2006-09, helping New York win its most recent world title.

"We always felt great about each other, about what kind of teammates we were and we know we can bring a lot of experience -- and playoff experience also -- to these guys," he added. "I think that's why this move is very intriguing. Manny's ready to go, and so am I."

Indians, 2012:

Following his release, Damon -- like Roy Oswalt -- could package himself to the highest-bidding contender for help down the stretch.

Damon is still a reliably good hitter who doesn't cost much on short money. I'm a little surprised he went unsigned given who's being trotted out at DH across the AL. Heck, even the corner OF positions and accounting for his noodle arm.

So that's how it happened!

I'm surprised Derrek Lee and Vlad Guerrero are still unsigned while Raul Ibanez is DHing for the Yankees.

Shelley Duncan was also a teammate.

Yeah, it's pretty amusing. That said, perhaps it means that Damon isn't quite as stupid as everybody thinks he is. Old players who are league average at best don't get to hang around the league in their dotage if they're perceived as dicks or troublemakers. By playing the nice, positive guy, Damon increases his chances of getting a job for another year, drawing ever closer to his 3k hits.

Because Damon isn't black, fast and scrappy?

Willy Mays Hayes could have an OBP of .310 and he'd still lead-off for 15 teams.

I imagine Juan Pierre as a pretty solid comp for Willy Mays Hayes, actually.

I hate how white players get jobbed by never being considered "scrappy".

He's the Robbie Keane of this continent.

You sayin' Damon doesn't have "the essentials?"

Johnny Damon excited to join Indians

but is he as excited as Tim Tebow is?
   23. Arnett Mead (Arjun) Posted: April 12, 2012 at 03:06 PM (#4105098)
He's the Robbie Keane of this continent.

My first thought was also "he's the Robbie Keane of baseball!".

As was Casey Kotchman.

If I was half as clever as Repoz, I'd post something amazing that referenced Kotchman's eye pus, Sandy Duncan's glass eye, and the Rickey Henderson "I used to play with a guy who wore a helmet in the field" story.

But I'm not. So I'll just give you the building blocks.

I think those were the ingredients they used to grow Joe West in a test tube.

My views are just about the same as Casey's eye pus.
   27. Der_K Posted: April 12, 2012 at 04:27 PM (#4105191)
I thought of Hayes as being more like Alex Cole.
