Jon Heyman: Rangers emerge as suitor for Andruw

The Rangers could emerge as a possibility for outfielder Andruw Jones, who became a free agent after working out a separation agreement with the Dodgers. “If someone wants to resurrect their career, Texas is the perfect place,” an American League executive said, referring to the hitters’ park in which the Rangers reside.

Jones, who hit .158 with three home runs and 14 RBIs in a disastrous season with the Dodgers after 11 productive seasons with the Braves, also received an inquiry from the Yankees, who have several center field candidates but no set starter. However, the Rangers may make more sense for him. Another plus for Texas is that it has one of baseball’s most respected hitting coaches in Rudy Jaramillo.

I wonder who is Heyman’s source for this….

Yeesh... Heyman's getting savaged in the comments for that article.

Please do it, Texas. The Halos beseech you!

I didn't have a date to the prom either, Texas, but at least I didn't go asking my older brother's heroin-addict dropout ex-girlfriend.

This comment is useless without pictures.

I don't know. Those comments are unusually nasty and personal. I don't mind anonymous handles on the web (obviously I have one or more, myself) but I doubt that people would say that kind of crap if they had to use their real names.

Those comments are all idiotic. SI should fire Heyman for conflict of interest? Umm... what conflict of interest? He gets information from Boras, spin or no spin, and reports on it, generating page hits for SI. That is SI's interest.

The only real problem I have with this article is the title: "Rangers emerge as suitor for Andruw". This implies that Daniels is actively trying to get Jones in a Rangers uniform. The first line of the story is much more accurate: "The Rangers could emerge..." (emphasis added).

Let's face it, this is a BS story, but this has been a weird offseason. In the same vain, sometimes you smoke a few stems and seeds because that is literally all you could scrounge up.

The Rangers just announced that their star Josh Hamilton will be moving from center field to right field, which could possibly open an opportunity for Jones, who wouldn't require much in terms of pay, as he's already receiving $22 million from the Dodgers, with $17 million of that deferred as per the agreement.

Nolan Ryan announced this and then Daniels announced it wasn't so. Boras is probably better off NOT planting stories about Jones in the press. He's better off trying to sneak Jones onto a team's roster before the fanbase of any team gets wind of a Jones signing and revolts. Get him signed and then announce it at 11:30 pm Friday night the week before spring training starts.

He could take a page from the annals of pro wrestling.

I dunno. I had my doubts about Milton Bradley, too, but that acquisition turned out fine. Jones could have something left in the tank.

OTOH I also had my doubts about bringing in Ken Caminiti and Andres Galarraga back in '01, and that was an unmitigated disaster.

Milton Bradley was coming off a season with a 153 OPS+. Jones wasn't quite up to that standard last year...

I don't think it's a stretch to say that Bradley, when healthy, runs circles around any-era Andruw as a hitter.

Sure, but "when healthy" was the kicker. Perhaps there was a better chance for Bradley to be healthy than Jones to be svelte, but ...

An injured Jones is a better player than a healthy Jones. If the Rangers sign Jones you should pray for an injury. And this Jones sucks because he's heavy thing is nonsense. Jones sucks because he sucks. If he loses thirty pounds he'll still suck. If any team actually does the unthinkable and signs Jones then fans of those teams need to pray for an injury and failing that hope he shows up in camp fat. The worst thing that could happen to a team is to have Jones show up looking good because that might convince them to waste a couple hundred at-bats on the worst player in baseball.
   20. phredbird Posted: February 05, 2009 at 06:23 PM (#3068365)
gaelan is right. jones is just plain bad anymore.
but the rangers may be the first team to figure out that it might not hurt to just let him come to camp. he's getting his money from the dodgers no matter what -- thanks a bunch uncle ned -- so the rangers can actually get him for peanuts if it turns out jones has managed to turn himself around. i wouldn't bet on it myself, but i can see the rangers thinking.
since andruw has been cut from the dodgers, the rangers don't even have to pick up any of that contract if they sign jones, do they?

But Boras has promised Jones will get a contract for more than the minimum and not as an NRI! As crazy as that sounds, I'm not betting against him. I'm convinced he has mind control powers.

Gaelan, you seem to have mixed feelings about Andruw. What do you really think of him? :)
   23. zonk Posted: February 05, 2009 at 06:50 PM (#3068398)
Sooo...

Not standing on the front porch of the ballpark with a loaded shotgun and sign reading "NO ANDRUW JONES ADMITTED" qualifies as "emerging as a suitor"?

I guess my softball team is then technically a suitor for the services of Mr. Jones, too.

Just because the tank is the size of Alaska doesn't necessarily mean there's anything in it.

You might want to consider it, zonk. Just guessing, but wouldn't he be better than at least two or three players on your team? He may come cheap too...

He could be decent for zonk's team in a platoon. Maybe.

Not ours. My wife is at catcher, so I don't know where we would put Jones.

Pinch-hitting for Darryl Strawberry perchance?

All I know is that 'immobile light-hitting 1B' is already occupied by myself. We also have "uninterested RF that picks dandelions during the game" covered by a fellow who always picks up the first round of beers after games.

I suppose we might be able to find a spot for him at "backup catcher who's only on the team because his brother is", but we would need a Jones sibling that can really hit to make that work.
   29. Willie Mayspedes Posted: February 05, 2009 at 07:37 PM (#3068452)
He could have a spot on my team. We are 0-19-1 in our last two seasons. At least he could throw the ball from the OF to 2B. He'd hit last and probably buy a lot of cases of beers after striking out.
