From Bill Deane to Buddy Deane and back again…
What’s more interesting to me isn’t so much what Giambi will bring to the team as what he represents. When Moneyball came out, those who failed to understand the point of the book ranted and raved about Billy Beane’s lust for guys who walk a lot. They questioned what would happen to the A’s when high-OBP guys stopped being undervalued.
Of course, OBP was never the point. Moneyball provided a snapshot in time of the baseball world and its inefficiencies. At the time that the book came out, OBP was plentiful and cheap (the Red Sox’ signing of David Ortiz, Bill Mueller and Kevin Millar for dryer lint and a couple of buttons being prime examples of this inefficiency back then). Since then, we’ve seen the trend shift numerous times. In the current climate, with analysis of defensive contributions becoming more common and more robust, teams are increasingly targeting well-rounded players who contribute both offensively and with the glove. They have, in turn, heavily discounted big, lumbering dudes who walk a lot, hit home runs, and can’t catch a ball if it dropped on their head during Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve.

1. GregD Posted: January 07, 2009 at 05:43 PM (#3045423)Well, Emil Brown and Mike Sweeney were certainly inefficient.
Jeez, I don't think Willie Mays in his prime could have caught a ball if it dropped on his head during Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve.
Is he referring to the giant ball? If so, I think any player would be lucky to survive having it dropped on his head.
If he's referring to a regular baseball- most players would not expect to have a ball dropped on their head in that situation, particularly during the offseason, and they likely would not be wearing a glove since it is not a game situation. While some might recover in time from the pain and shock to snatch the ball out of the air before it hit the ground, I can't believe that the cumulative fielding percentage in that situation is greater than .005.
In conclusion, I am hungry and want some lunch.
Harrr!
And speaking of Dick Clark, he shouldn't be on the air. It's just sad to see him try to talk, poor guy.
Meanwhile, over on CNN, that zany Kathy Griffin said that one of her New Year's resolutions was to get into Miley Cyrus' pants. I kid you not.
Meh, she went to OPRF HS. I'm not shocked by anything stupid she might say.
Then unsubscribe from Deja View.
Best Regards
John
Can you imagine the outcry if a male host had made the same comment whether about Miley or one of the Jonas Brothers?
The more we ignore Kathy Griffin, the better, no matter what she may do to get our attention.
I wouldn't call it a resolution, per se, but I wouldn't mind doing that myself.
If that's the case, she's going to need to lose some weight. Miley's pretty skinny, even by 16-year-old girl standards, and Kathy's pushing fifty now.
What?
Speaking of New Year's Eve, did anyone else think this year's coverage was atrocious? Not just the Dick Clark unfortunateness, but ABC barely showed the actual ball dropping. I was watching it with my kids, and I'm not sure any of them had any idea what the hell was going on.
Like last year, I watched Robbie Maddison jump over something in Vegas. What can I say? I loved Evel Knievel as a kid.
Kathy Griffin and I have something in common. Wait, how old is Miley? And more importantly, which one is Miley?
...needless to say I was a little confused.
Yeah, like when Russell Brand made all those dirty jokes about seducing the Jonas Brothers and introducing them to anal sex at the 2008 MTV Awards. That thread here at BTF was like 700+ posts long.
