Jose Canseco signs with Cancun team in Mexican League

Whoever slew Quintana Roo?

The 47-year-old former MVP reports to the Quintana Roo Tigers Monday for the opening of their spring training.

“I am thrilled to be back in affiliated professional baseball,” said Canseco. “Playing and managing for the independent league Yuma Scorpions last year really rekindled my love for the game and facing the veteran players in that league made me realize that I can still hit at the major league level. I am grateful that Cancun has given me this opportunity and I hope to help them to a championship season and demonstrate that I can help a big league team.”

Yup, Jose still holds his MLB dreams. It’s surprising to see the Tigers sign him considering they won the league last year. Are they desperate for publicity or do they actually think a guy who hit .256 in the Golden Baseball League last year will be an asset?

Who is he talking about, specifically? Thanks.

I didn't have HBO until about a month ago. As of last night, I've caught up with the first two seasons of Kenny Powers. Jose Canseco would have been a cool guest star for Kenny to face in the Mexican League.

His twitter feed continues to be awesome.

Never been to mexico before except border towns where i had some issues .can't wait to see mayans and there ruins they were badass

Fenway 350 lifetime batting average 1 hr per every 9 at bats .I am ready to play for Boston give me a tryout

Billy beane please give me a try out

I guess murderers and child molestors get more chances than I do

And here is the candy poem he made for his girlfriend Leila.

Of whom he once tweeted:
I hate when woman try to use celebrities for money or fame .watch out for leila she's a man eater

How can u put a restraining order on someone u havnt seen in 4 months and lives in another state

Let us all give thanks to Sean Forman once again. I did not realize until 10 seconds ago that the Yuma Scorpions are on BBref.

Easy to see the players with MLB experience on Canseco's team, they are in bold.

Brother Ozzie, Willy Aybar, Chris Britton, Tony Phillips (yes, that Tony Phillips, age 52), Joey Gathright, Luis Ugueto, Frank Gracesqui.

Some other pitchers in the league who were once in MLB: Mike Burns, Lou Pote, Jorge Vasquez, Brandon Villafuerte, Albie Lopez, Bart Fortunato, Francisco Cruceta, Dave Davidson.

It's a real hitters league, with a league OPS of .818. Canseco at .798 is a bit below average for the league. So I suppose he'd have to rely on his glove if he were to help a major league team. He played 6 games in the outfield, made 6 putouts and 3 errors.

You forget his pitching experience.

My bad, that should be mentioned. He pitched 25 innings with a 10.44 ERA. But don't let it be said he's afraid to throw inside, in that time he plunked 11 batters (out of 138 faced).

If he faced as many batters as Verlander does with that rate, he'd hit 77 batters. That would break the 19th century record of 54.

I'd make fun of Canseco for his insane belief that he can still make a living in baseball, except I have no idea what skills he could possibly have that would allow him to make a living outside of baseball.

I do think he is right to believe he should have a reality TV show. His skillset is perfect for that.

He hit .312 with a HR every 13 at bats there. Still, the numbers he made up are closer to reality than I'd expect Canseco to be.

Seriously. You can even put Ozzie on the show! What a hook! The juice twins!

Canseco hasn't played in 11 years and he is still a year younger than Julio Franco in his last MLB season.

It's a good thing he's adding "Manager" to his resume.

I never knew there was such a thing as a "Big Hunk" bar.

Learn something new every day, I guess.

Canseco hasn't played in 11 years and he is still TWO years younger than Jamie Moyer, who will be in Colorado's spring training in a couple of weeks.

That candy poem is actually pretty cool. But it was definitely made by a W4M.

So much for Repoz's seeming omniscience -- he seems unaware of this book. Which I'm pretty sure I own, along with the same series' deliciously titled The Marrow Eaters ... though it appears that my copy of The Beast with the Red Hands went away with my first book collection after Divorce No. 1 26-odd years ago. *sigh*

Internet research indicates that a Big Hunk bar consists of a core of peanuts covered by nougat.

Seems like it'd be messy to eat.

I never knew there was such a thing as a "Big Hunk" bar.

It might be a regional thing. It's made by a candy company about ten miles south of the Oakland Coliseum.

My favorite recent Canseco tweet:

I faught Hung man choi I had a bad knee and he's 7'2 370 lbs .I knew I was going to lose but I faced my fears

I think he means Hong-Man Choi. Bad typo there.

It depends on your point of view. From his, probably not.

I don't know. Dennis Rodman is shockingly still alive and not in prison.

Yeah, but he's also kind of faded from view to an extent, hasn't he? Or maybe I just don't travel in the sort of circles that would provide Rodman updates.

Rodman, I think, certainly did the whole look-like-a-nutcase-celeb thing very well, but I wonder if a lot of that wasn't just a schtick to promote/market himself.

On the other hand, I think Canseco is exactly what he appears to be.
