Jose Contreras ruptures tendon in White Sox game

Barnald, sends this rough news over.

White Sox pitcher Jose Contreras ruptured his left Achilles’ tendon and left Saturday’s game against the Boston Red Sox in the second inning.

With two outs and a man on second, Jacoby Ellsbury hit a sharp grounder to first base. Contreras got a late start to cover the base and couldn’t handle Nick Swisher’s wide throw. Contreras ran past the bag, then fell to the ground at the end of the infield while trying to avoid Ellsbury.

Contreras writhed in pain on the ground, clutching his ankle. He needed help to walk off the field. D.J. Carrrasco relieved him and got out of the inning with no runs.

Ugh. Just terrible. Contreras got to his knees as the trainers were helping him and pounded his fists on the grass in frustration at the injury.

It looked like he may have done it even before getting to the bag or attempting to receive Swisher's errant throw. He took an odd route to the base and appeared to pull up with a limp when he tried to change direction.

It looked to me like it might have happened on the seam between the grass and dirt approaching first base. It clearly looked like he did it before Swisher's throw got there and probably would have made the play if not for the injury. He appeared to be in an enormous amount of pain. He did not appear to be late off the mound to me, his approach appeared textbook (get to the line and then run up the line toward the first baseman) and I think would have been a routine play if he hadn't been injured a second beforehand.

I've watched the video of it about a half dozen times and every time I can just hear a ripping/snapping sounds in the back of my mind right when it seems to tear. I'm getting sympathy pains.

I was at the game, although out in LF. Even from a distance it looked ugly, and he looked like he was in a huge amount of pain. Yuck.

A friend of a friend ruptured his Achilles' tendon playing high-school football. My friend told me his calf muscle rolled up his leg like a windowshade. Since then, I've considered "ruptured Achilles' tendon" to be one of the most frightening phrases in the English language.
