Jose Offerman arrested after attack with bat

Hit the Beech!

Long Island Ducks shortstop and former major league All-Star Jose Offerman attacked Bridgeport Bluefish starting pitcher Matt Beech with a bat in the second inning of Tuesday’s game at Harbor Yard, delaying the game 17 minutes.

Both Beech and Bluefish catcher John Nathans were injured by Offerman, who was struck by a pitch and rushed the mound. Offerman was later arrested. A source said he was charged with second-degree assault and faces a $10,000 bond.

Offerman, a former Bluefish, homered on the first pitch of the game by Beech. An inning later, Offerman was hit on his left calf by an 0-and-1 pitch. He immediately charged the mound, wielding his bat in his right hand. Beech, who had his arms outstretched in an attempt to defend himself, was struck on the fingertips of his pitching hand as both benches immediately emptied.

I would have expected a swing and a miss.

From the comments section...

I was at this game and could not believe what I was seeing. It is a shame that the children had to witness such an an event. I am sure the league will deal with this in a serious manner.

It is a joke that Tommy John was ejected after the stunt Offerman pulled.

If it was hockey, he would have only received a two minute penalty...

First pitching swinging? ;)

The real news is that Offerman was playing SS.
   6. Guts Posted: August 15, 2007 at 04:29 AM (#2485536)
I wonder what his UZR is right now; even in whatever league this is, he can't be a good defensive SS, though I guess he still has some pop in his bat.

Jesus, he did have an 0-1 count on him, maybe he was not actually hit on purpose.

Was Offerman yelling "you, Beech" as he charged the mound?

Will this tarnish Jose's Hall of Fame chances?

Matt Beech is still pitching?

Beech is the first left-hander Offerman's hit in nearly ten years.

Kwik-kwiz: who is Phil Rizzuto's closest comp? Jose Offerman. I kid you not.

The pitcher probably called him Jose O-for-ten.

"Kwik-kwiz: who is Phil Rizzuto's closest comp? Jose Offerman. I kid you not."

They're practically twins, after all.

Good question, Juan Marichal did have to wait a few years but eventually got in.

So I think Jose will have to be patient, very patient.

this will be the last game of baseball that offerman ever plays.

Smacked his Beech up.

A Matt Beech sighting wow! I loved that arm way back when. Had him in multiple fantasy leagues.

All right, Matt Beech is still playing! I bought his BB-Ref.com page when Sean first started the page sponsorship program.

What Offerman did is absolutely bizarre.

Have you guys seen who else is on that Ducks roster? A veritable treasure trove of Primer jokes: Pete Rose Jr., Carl Everett...

And Mike Crudale.

When you are one of the richest guys in the league, you would be well advised not to make yourself a target of lawsuits.

Olbermann on the news: "That's the first time that Offerman has made solid contact on two consecutive swings in over a decade" (paraphrasing)

Yet another error by Offerman
   26. Portia Stanke Posted: August 16, 2007 at 02:49 AM (#2486880)
Alfonso, Everett, Offerman, Rose, Crudale, Damian Rolls, Lance Davis, Danny Graves, John Halama, John Riedling, Ed Yarnall...

It's like the senior/washed-up league never left.

While the Ducks have all these washed-up major-league stars, other teams in the league have to make do with washed-up bit-players like Ramon Nivar, Wayne Franklin, Frank Castillo (York Revolution), Chris Brock, Felix Hernandez (Lancaster Barnstormers), Eric Junge, Matt Perisho, Sean Fesh, Hector Mercado, Quinton McCracken (Bridgeport Bluefish), Alan Zinter, Andy Van Hekken (Somerset Patriots), Craig Paquette (Camden Riversharks), and Jeff Tam (who has somehow agreed to play for the team that plays no home games).

The Newark Bears used to be the team with all the stars (Jose Canseco, Rickey Henderson, Jose Lima), but I don't recognize a single name on their roster now except Jeriome Robertson.

Speaking of the Atlantic League, this guy has been absolutely brilliant as...yes, the closer for an independent league team, but still. He's overpowering. The Phillies should take a chance on him instead of trading for wife-beaters from the Mariners.
