Josh Beckett takes on LA Times columnist T.J. Simers

This is like Generation 9 Noz Bot taking on Desghidorah…you don’t know who to root for!

Did you ever think the ball would ever come down that first batter you faced?

“I figured it would eventually. Yeah, I figured it would.”

What did you think at that moment, Dodgers debut, second pitch and …

“I thought I made a pretty [expletive] pitch. That’s what I was thinking.”

That’s your choice of words?

“Sure.”

...Then my tape is no good then.

“I can’t believe you’re using that tape [recorder] anyway.”

I’m 61 years old, that’s the only tape I know how to use. I never figured out those [digital recorders]. You promised me if I didn’t win the game it would be a better column that it would be a better column and how I’m struggling a little bit. Shouldn’t you pick up a chair and throw it or something or do something? Because these guy have filled me in what you were like in Boston.

“Yeah, I threw a lot of chairs at them.”

Josh Beckett vs T.J. Simers? If there was ever a time to root for the meteor...

yawn.
   3. DanO Posted: August 28, 2012 at 10:26 AM (#4219978)
Wow, never thought I'd have any sympathy for Beckett, but those questions were just obnoxious. I think Beckett handled himself quite reasonably.

Can we please stop linking to Simers columns?
   5. RB in NYC (Now Semi-Retired from BBTF) Posted: August 28, 2012 at 10:34 AM (#4219985)
I still don't understand how Simers has somehow turned showing up and asking ####### questions into a career-defining gimmick. I mean, come on.
   6. phredbird Posted: August 28, 2012 at 10:39 AM (#4219990)
it's not a simers column.

C'mon Josh, it's a simple question.

All this time I had T.J. Simers confused with J.A. Adande for some reason.
   9. Belfry Bob Posted: August 28, 2012 at 10:53 AM (#4220014)
Wow. How does that guy even sleep at night?

It's as if Dave Kingman became a sportswriter instead of a ballplayer.
   10. robinred Posted: August 28, 2012 at 10:55 AM (#4220017)
Simers is a 61-year-old white guy who writes for the LA Times, and who does what you see above. Adande is a 40-year-old jock-friendly black guy who used to work for the LA Times and now covers the NBA for ESPN.

There is an LA connection, but that is sort of like confusing Bill Simmons and Howard Bryant.

   11. bunyon Posted: August 28, 2012 at 11:05 AM (#4220026)
I always confuse Robinred and Red Adair.
   12. robinred Posted: August 28, 2012 at 11:15 AM (#4220054)
I guess the other connection is the J in the initialled names, but it is still funny.

I always confuse TJ Simers with Stuttering John from the Howard Stern show. Same schtick, right?
   14. Slivers of Maranville (SdeB) Posted: August 28, 2012 at 11:31 AM (#4220078)
I don't know that I ever saw a picture of Simers until I clicked on this article. I've only been in L.A. twice in my life.
   15. Benji Gil Gamesh Rises Posted: August 28, 2012 at 12:31 PM (#4220136)
I am positive that Beckett has never been a bigger ass in his professional life than Simers was with that obnoxious line of questioning.
   16. Champions Table Posted: August 28, 2012 at 01:00 PM (#4220163)
Seriously, Simers turned Beckett from heel to face right there.
   17. Guapo Posted: August 28, 2012 at 01:32 PM (#4220201)
T.J. Simers' Retirement Plan:

1. Provoke Josh Beckett into assaulting me
2. Sue
3. Retire
   18. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: August 28, 2012 at 01:34 PM (#4220205)

He's had a lot of practice in Boston. I can't think of anyone in Boston who's quite the same type of ####, but there's several journalists who match up on overall ####### level. Simers may take the cake for being insulting during the interview, but Shaughnessey can write up just as cruel a knife job.
   19. Dale Sams Posted: August 28, 2012 at 01:39 PM (#4220213)
I always figured these Simers pieces were fictional interviews.

What kills me about Shaughnessy is that when he decides to write a good piece, he absolutely kills it. About 3-4 times a year he writes an absolute must-read piece, typically human interest type stuff, and you realize how good he can be when he chooses that path. Unfortunately he spends the majority of his time on cheap shot snark pieces that aren't worth lining a bird cage with.

What kills me about Shaughnessy is that when he decides to write a good piece, he absolutely kills it.

I've said this before, but judging from what people who've interacted with him personally have said Shaughnessy is a very nice, considerate guy who will go out of his way to help someone. It provokes some cognitive dissonance in me to know this. But I've gotten to know some people personally who I absolutely despised professionally, and they were ok. Totally wrong and jerks about it, but not bad people. Others, though, were malignant through and through. I guess Dan's not the latter.
   22. Joe Bivens, Minor Genius Posted: August 28, 2012 at 03:47 PM (#4220383)
I've always maintained that Shaughnessy is playing a role at the Globe. He's the resident #### stirrer, and they pay him well to be it.
   23. Belfry Bob Posted: August 28, 2012 at 07:39 PM (#4220674)
So this is sorta like Godzilla versus the Smog Monster.Hard to know who to root for, but you've got to eventually go with the big green guy.

Folks, please don't click on a Simers link...it just makes the Times think people actually want to read him and it keeps him employed.

Even with what must be a weird glitch in the last graf that is either a transcription error or a sign that T.J. is on the cusp of having a stroke.

Hey...

--No. That would provoke a lot of sympathy for Simers, and that's just a total waste of a precious commodity.

This is neither a Simers story nor an L.A. Times link.

I enjoyed that exchange. But then, I am quite perverse.

Hmm. Now that I know what he looks like, I find T.J. Simers' shtick moderately less insufferable. I had imagined him as a slick, smug, ex-jock type, not a schlubby grandpa.

It's kind of funny, in a Borat/Ali G kind of way, to imagine a guy like that going into a locker room and asking idiot questions.
   29. bob gee Posted: August 29, 2012 at 07:44 AM (#4220908)
#25 - thank you don. i keep begging that for the simers links, plaschke links, and lupica links.

the way i saw it was NOT a simers link was i moved my mouse over the headline above, saw that the link was going to weei.com and clicked.

if it says latimes.com do NOT click! and more importantly, stop posting links to his drivel.

EEI isn't much better.
   31. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: August 29, 2012 at 08:40 AM (#4220939)
Actually I find the WEEI website pretty good. Alex Speier is the best beat writer following the team and Rob Bradford is OK if a bit vanilla. The only one I don't like is Minihane who is working on the Dan Shaugnessy starter kit minus the hair.

The station itself is simply unlistenable, or at least it was the last time I tried to listen to it.
   32. Joe Bivens, Minor Genius Posted: August 29, 2012 at 08:52 AM (#4220950)
It is unlistenable. I stopped as soon as the competition went on air.

The Big Show was the worst. (I don't count D&C as "sports talk". Their programming is Limbaugh-like.)

4 or 5 guys all blathering at the same time is as annoying as if they blathered separately, only you can't really hear what they're saying when they're all talking at the same time.

you know how i know he's a schlubby grandpa? he's been writing that about himself for about as long as he's been doing his column. also, i've seen him in person. at the nokia theater. talking to sandy koufax and joe torre, who seemed to be fine with sitting around with him and shooting the breeze. he's not nearly as much a problem to the athletes as some seem to think, especially here.

but to each his own.

Put me down for a steel cage deathmatch.

Agreed - Paul Flannery, who covers the Celtics, is also pretty good.
