1. Randy JonesC'mon Josh, it's a simple question.
It's as if Dave Kingman became a sportswriter instead of a ballplayer.
There is an LA connection, but that is sort of like confusing Bill Simmons and Howard Bryant.
I always confuse TJ Simers with Stuttering John from the Howard Stern show. Same schtick, right?
1. Provoke Josh Beckett into assaulting me
2. Sue
3. Retire
He's had a lot of practice in Boston. I can't think of anyone in Boston who's quite the same type of ####, but there's several journalists who match up on overall ####### level. Simers may take the cake for being insulting during the interview, but Shaughnessey can write up just as cruel a knife job.
What kills me about Shaughnessy is that when he decides to write a good piece, he absolutely kills it. About 3-4 times a year he writes an absolute must-read piece, typically human interest type stuff, and you realize how good he can be when he chooses that path. Unfortunately he spends the majority of his time on cheap shot snark pieces that aren't worth lining a bird cage with.
I've said this before, but judging from what people who've interacted with him personally have said Shaughnessy is a very nice, considerate guy who will go out of his way to help someone. It provokes some cognitive dissonance in me to know this. But I've gotten to know some people personally who I absolutely despised professionally, and they were ok. Totally wrong and jerks about it, but not bad people. Others, though, were malignant through and through. I guess Dan's not the latter.
Even with what must be a weird glitch in the last graf that is either a transcription error or a sign that T.J. is on the cusp of having a stroke.
Hey...
--No. That would provoke a lot of sympathy for Simers, and that's just a total waste of a precious commodity.
This is neither a Simers story nor an L.A. Times link.
Hmm. Now that I know what he looks like, I find T.J. Simers' shtick moderately less insufferable. I had imagined him as a slick, smug, ex-jock type, not a schlubby grandpa.
It's kind of funny, in a Borat/Ali G kind of way, to imagine a guy like that going into a locker room and asking idiot questions.
the way i saw it was NOT a simers link was i moved my mouse over the headline above, saw that the link was going to weei.com and clicked.
if it says latimes.com do NOT click! and more importantly, stop posting links to his drivel.
The station itself is simply unlistenable, or at least it was the last time I tried to listen to it.
The Big Show was the worst. (I don't count D&C as "sports talk". Their programming is Limbaugh-like.)
4 or 5 guys all blathering at the same time is as annoying as if they blathered separately, only you can't really hear what they're saying when they're all talking at the same time.
you know how i know he's a schlubby grandpa? he's been writing that about himself for about as long as he's been doing his column. also, i've seen him in person. at the nokia theater. talking to sandy koufax and joe torre, who seemed to be fine with sitting around with him and shooting the breeze. he's not nearly as much a problem to the athletes as some seem to think, especially here.
but to each his own.
Put me down for a steel cage deathmatch.
Agreed - Paul Flannery, who covers the Celtics, is also pretty good.
