Josh Hamilton Says Holy Spirit Spoke to Him Before 2011 World Series Home Run

Josh Hamilton’s 28 dingers in the 2008 Home Run Derby are forever etched in baseball lore, but the former Ranger has a special memory attached to another famous homer.

Hamilton is set to be inducted into the Rangers’ Hall of Fame on Saturday alongside Texas greats Nolan Ryan, Pudge Rodriguez, Ruben Sierra, Michael Young and more. Ahead of his induction, Hamilton reflected on his career with the franchise in a piece for the Players Tribune, where he said the Holy Spirit told him that he would hit a home run in Game 6 of the 2011 World Series.

“I’m in the on-deck circle, in extra innings, and I’m telling you, out of nowhere….I hear the Holy Spirit talking to me,” he said. “This is the honest truth. For real.

There are thoughts I have on this- but, as a mainliner, I have a feeling that both sides would jump me, so….

This is a very old story. He told reporters the same thing back in 2011 right after it happened. Anyway, I thought Hamilton’s whole born again shine faded when he went on that cocaine bender.

I wonder what voices talking to him after you sign with the angels. Dude really screw things up for my guys, but at least he got paid.

The full article (in the Player’s Tribune) ends in a nice way:

There are just so many great memories when it comes to me and the Texas Rangers.

And a lot of them aren’t even from games. I’ve been thinking about that fact a ton over the past few months, to be honest. When someone tells you that you’re going to be inducted into their Hall of Fame, you can’t help but think about your legacy, about how you’re going to be remembered.

And with me, that legacy is maybe a bit more layered and complicated than it is with some players.

Of course I’d love for people to remember me as a guy who could really swing it and drive in runs and play great defense. But at the same time, you know what … I also really hope that an even bigger part of the legacy I left with the Rangers has to do with the interactions I had with people while playing this game.

I hope that there are thousands of people all over Texas who will always have a cool memory of talking with Josh Hamilton — just Josh, the person, you know what I mean? Or that something about my story — the good, the bad, whatever it may be — resonated for them and maybe helped them get through some tough times of their own. I hope I’ll be remembered as someone who really believed that it was important to treat people well, and listen to their stories, and look them in the eye and tell them that they matter — let them know that whatever they’re going through, they can overcome it.

That’s something that has always been central to who I am, and it’s something that I’ve realized means even more to me now that I’ve left the game.

Too bad the Holy Spirit couldn't have shown up a few months earlier, to tell him "Don't throw balls into the bleachers."

The Holy Spirit spoke to me some years ago.

"Johnny!" it said.

"My name is JOE!"

We haven't spoken since.

He should have asked it whether it proceeded from the Father or from the Father and the Son. Would have cleared up that little issue.

Since Nelson Cruz and Beltre hit two home runs each, did God talk to them twice? I won't consider that go spoke to the apostate Allen Craig.

Craig's foot was smote pretty bad a couple years later, though.

That is dumber than ten dogs.

Religion is orthogonal to intelligence. It is about faith, which is non-rational. That is not a criticism by the way, plenty of great things are non-rational. And also non-rational is NOT the same as irrational.

Josh Hamilton, however does come across as kind of dumb. People are making fun of Josh (obviously). Some of that spills over to religion, but most of that is just acknowledging the obvious - as stated above - religion is non-rational.

huh, god used to post here all the time, back in the day.

or did furtado decide that since you can't post as somebody else he had to change his handle?

was hoping he'd come by and clear up the confusion.

BTW, post 20 FTW

If you knew Davo, or if you'd read his third sentence, you would have been able to detect the sarcasm.

Yeah Davo was sincerely calling out the thread for (to his eyes) implying religious people are stupid.

They just have really, really stupid ideas about movies. And, well, pretty much everything else.
