Juan Soto Makes His Second MLB Debut Tonight

The Nationals and Yankees will share a strange and complicated experience Monday evening when, at 5:05 p.m., they resume the game suspended due to rain with the score tied in the sixth inning on May 15.

But Howie Kendrick, now out for the season with an Achilles’ injury, is due up third that inning. Andrew Stevenson, since optioned to Class AAA Syracuse, is also in the lineup. Adam Eaton and Daniel Murphy, both available now, were not on the active roster that day. Juan Soto had not yet made his major league debut. What are the Nationals to do?

Sean Forman, of BTF Softball fame, remarked in a tweet about Juan Soto's unique situation of completing a game that was started before his physical debut at the Major League level:

Sean Forman @sean_forman
Barry Bonds is perhaps the most famous case of this. @baseball_ref we actually look at the suspended game as not-their-debut. It's a major headache nonetheless.

Sean cites this paragraph from the article, emphasis is from his tweet:
According to rule 7.02(c) of the Major League Baseball rule book, any player who was not in the game at the time it was postponed can be used as a substitute when it resumes. Any player who was not on the active roster when the game began can be used when it resumes. Nationals Manager Dave Martinez said his understanding is that the Nationals must send their lineup changes to the league ahead of time — i.e., who will play in Kendrick’s place, in Stevenson’s place, etc. — and can then proceed with the game as usual. If they want, the Nationals can then replace Kendrick with Murphy and Stevenson with Eaton, or find a place for Soto. If they do find a place for Soto, history will change. He made his major league debut on May 20, 2018. If he plays in a game that officially began on May 15 . . . well, people have dedicated lifetimes to lesser questions.

I must point out that I still have not washed the hand that shook Sean Forman's at last year's Annual BTF Softball game. In related news, I need to see a doctor about a fungal infection in my right hand.

I was desperately hoping Arod would hit his 500th or 600th home run in the completion of a suspended game a few weeks after hitting his milestone homer.

The Yankees' lineup for the resumed game features two changes. Brett Gardner, a pinch hitter when he appeared in the sixth, will be replaced:

Hicks CF
Judge RF
Stanton LF
Sánchez C
Gregorius SS
Walker 1B
Andújar 3B
Gardner PH (will be replaced)
Torres 2B

Not sure about the pitching. Back when men were men, the starters for the regular game would probably have just begun their endeavors a little earlier, grateful for the opportunity to pick up 2 Wins in a day's work.

is it a double header today or are they just completing the suspended game?

Suspended game resumes with bottom of 6th at 5:05 PM; regular game* starts 30 minutes after completion of suspended game.

*Well, not originally scheduled for today, but it was rained out completely earlier.

Thank you. I thought it was just the suspended game. That makes more sense.

Back when men were men, Howie Kendrick would have rubbed a little dirt on his heel and gotten to business.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone wondered if Juan Soto gets a hit today "do we throw this ball out?"

Not if it lands in the hands of the fans!

BREAKING NEWS: Bryce Harper has shaved his beard. Temperature is in the mid-90s today.

Also, the Yankees have called up Clint Frazier, sending Ronald Torreyes to Scranton. They will also apparently have an as yet unnamed pitcher for the 26th man available for the regular game.

Glad to see Frazier back up, sorry to see Torreyes go. Too bad they don't have a second LH reliever so they could dump Shreve.

You can have your pick of Duensing, Rosario, Wilson, or Montgomery for Torres.

It's spelled "Torreyes".

I hope that's not your wanking hand.

So Joe could have him ride the bench in favor of Heyward?

Terrific Teenager Juan Soto makes the best of his retroactive Major League debut and HRs to the top of the right center concourse. I've never seen one up there.

Does he have Bette Davis eyes?

Now the discussion will REALLY get interesting. Did he homer in his first MLB AB - or not?

No.

According to BBREF--no. I looked up Dave Parker who had a similar scenario. He went 0-4 in his first MLB game (actually was 0-10 before getting a hit) then took part in a continued game from before his debut where he went 1-1. His debut is listed as 0-4. His BA was .200 after his debut, though, just for accounting purposes.

Players' debuts are their first time appearing. Intricacies of our statistical accounting (needing to file a game under one day when it was actually played over two, for example) doesn't change actual reality.

Soto is the first player ever to hit a home run in the completion of a suspended game that started before he was called up for the first time.

Barry Bonds was, as far as I remember, the last player to play in the completion of a suspended game that started before he was called up for the first time.
