Behold!

I expect the cubs to move a few more players warm bodies by the deadline.

Two players from last year's All-Star game have already been traded during this season: Justin Masterson and Jason Grilli. Which of their fellow All-Stars will be the next to switch teams? Many great candidates! Including.....

Edward Mujica? Travis Wood? Everth Cabrera? Bartolo Colon? Dominic Brown?

I get the impression that Cashman might be fighting for his job this season. If the Yanks fail to make the postseason again, then he gets the ax. So I now expect the Yanks to pick up Cliff Lee and Alex Rios, at least.

I'm getting this sinking feeling that every legitimate N.L. contender is going to get better today, except the Nationals.

Mike Rizzo seems to have the strange notion that the team is flawless and none of our prospects can be traded under any circumstances.

Jeff Passan reports Lester dealt. But where? Early reports say Oakland.

Yanks looking at Dayan Viciedo and John Danks. Yuck.

@alexspeier: Trying to confirm, but hearing Lester and Gomes might be moving for Cespedes

Who do you figure--Bonifacio, maybe Russell, *maybe* Valbuena. I can't think of anybody else who'd have even minimal trade value, other than guys the Cubs aren't about to deal (Rizzo, Castro, Hendricks, Arrieta, Wood [his bad year notwithstanding], some of the young righthanded bullpen arms). Wesley Wright, I suppose, though as someone pointed out in another thread, teams seem to have wised up about trading prospects for LOOGYs.

I don't think Valbuena's getting traded, and I'm fine with that.

@JeffPassan: Final full trade: Jon Lester, Jonny Gomes and $ to Oakland for Yoenis Cespedes and the second pick in the competitive balance Comp B round.

Is Cespedes a free agent after his 4-year contract ends in 2015, or does he still go through 2 more years of arbitration?
   13. DA Baracus Posted: July 31, 2014 at 10:01 AM (#4761179)
He will be a free agent.

And Lester will be a free agent after this year so this is a strange trade.

Does this mean Hammel's days in the Oakland rotation are over? If so, that was quick...

Anyway, not that Cespedes is a superstar, but he seems like kind of a lot to give up for 2 months of Jon Lester for a team that already featured starting pitching as a strength.

Why do we suppose Boston would target a proven player (who's a free agent after 2015) over a package of prospects?
   19. Yeaarrgghhhh Posted: July 31, 2014 at 10:09 AM (#4761195)
I guess it kinda sorta makes sense. The A's are really going for it and get another ace. The Red Sox get a year of a solid player and a pick. But still...
   20. DCA Posted: July 31, 2014 at 10:09 AM (#4761196)
Cespedes isn't that good, and isn't cheap. Vogt/Gomes are an adequate fill-in rest-of-season. Maybe even an upgrade. And Lester >> Milone or Hammel.
   21. Roger McDowell spit on me! Posted: July 31, 2014 at 10:10 AM (#4761198)
Holy ####!!! I guess I'm not surprised Billy pulled the trigger like this, but I'm still shocked. Wow...just wow. Love Yoenis, but he's sometimes a little sloppy in the field and has never learned to adjust his approach at the plate. Gomes will certainly be happy coming back home...he was a big time favorite in the clubhouse and with fans in 2012 and they probably have enough offense to cover Cespedes leaving.

Isn't Cespedes awesome?

NO REFUNDS!!!!

Thank goodness for that. Hell, I said at the time of the deal that it wouldn't totally shock me to see Dan Straily outpitch Hammel in the second half. (Straily's been pretty bad at AAA this year, so maybe that's hyperbole; then again, he was the least important part of the trade.)

Terrible deal for Oakland.
   25. Roger McDowell spit on me! Posted: July 31, 2014 at 10:12 AM (#4761206)
And the A's rotation is just sick now...Lester, the Shark, Kazmir and Gray..matches up with anyone.

Nobody can ever accuse Billy Beane of not "going for it" this year, that's for sure.
   27. Avoid running at all times.-S. Paige Posted: July 31, 2014 at 10:16 AM (#4761214)
Beane is trying to make his $⁢ work in the postseason.

Why do we suppose Boston would target a proven player (who's a free agent after 2015) over a package of prospects?

Also a good question. Well, if Oakland was their trading partner, they don't have much to offer in the way of prospects, having traded both Russell and McKinney in the Shark deal. McKinney was their #2 prospect but isn't even in the Cubs' top 10, so if he's better than everyone left, the A's probably didn't have much to build a package with.

Perhaps the Sox were convinced they wouldn't get what they considered a suitable prospect/package of prospects from anybody (having struck out in their attempts to get Gausman or somebody), so they might as well trade for a guy with pretty good present major league value and perhaps some trade value next year if 2015 ends up being another bust for the team.
   29. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: July 31, 2014 at 10:20 AM (#4761224)
First impression is that I love this for the Red Sox. I don't think the A's are at all likely to sign Lester in the off-season, so the Red Sox are likely to get him back. That's especially true as the A's are giving them a competitive balance pick so the A's qualifying offer won't affect them as much as other teams. Yoenis is awesome and a great pickup for a team that should still have aspirations for next season.

The A's now have probably the best rotation in the majors, and have to be most likely to win the world series at this point.

Aren't both Coco Crisp and Craig Gentry injured at the moment? Who is playing center field for them now?
   32. bigglou115 Posted: July 31, 2014 at 10:25 AM (#4761233)
@29, the As can't give a QO to Lester, he wasn't on the roster all year.
   33. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: July 31, 2014 at 10:33 AM (#4761246)
Ah, didn't know that about QOs. Probably will increase Lester's price a little some. Still, they're favorites to sign the guy and they picked up Cespedes for at least a year on a good contract.
   34. Roger McDowell spit on me! Posted: July 31, 2014 at 10:33 AM (#4761248)
31 - Reddick or Billy Burns. In fact, Cespedes was slated to play CF a couple of days ago but "didn't feel comfortable" and asked Reddick if he would. That might have prompted Beane to offer up Cespedes as well as the fact he'd be gone after next year.
   35. Roger McDowell spit on me! Posted: July 31, 2014 at 10:35 AM (#4761253)
33 - You will love Cespedes, but he's frustrating sometimes...he's so athletic that you expect more, but then has these lapses..everyone remembers the great throw he made earlier in the season - but don't forget that he had to do that only because he misplayed the ball first.

Cherington has already said he'd focus on trades that have the potential to help the team be competitive in 2015.
Is it possible that Boston flips Cespedes before 4 PM EDT?
Yes, but I doubt it. Because of Boston's priority on waiver claims (due to their poor record), they don't need to deal before 4 PM today. They only need to deal today if a player they want is likely to be traded to a contender today. And I'm sure if a team is willing to unload a player to a contender, the fact that Boston can snag him after the deadline will be used by the team trading him away to negotiate a better return from a contender than they likely would get from Boston.

They still would need to make the trade before the deadline unless they think Cespedes can pass through waivers, wouldn't they?
   41. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: July 31, 2014 at 11:01 AM (#4761285)
I haven't heard them say who the Twins gave up to acquire Milone. I wouldn't be too shocked to learn it was for Sam Fuld--that's a trade that makes a bit of sense for both sides (with Oakland's now-weakened outfield).
   42. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: July 31, 2014 at 11:02 AM (#4761288)
OF Sam Fuld going to Oakland for Milone.

   44. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: July 31, 2014 at 11:10 AM (#4761295)
Helluva series of moves by the Twins right there--they snatched Fuld up from the waiver wire back in April (after he was DFAed by the Athletics!), watched him OBP .370 for them, then traded him back to the Athletics for a decent young pitcher.

   46. Yoenis Cespedes, Baseball Savant Posted: July 31, 2014 at 11:14 AM (#4761302)
Milone for Fuld makes me dry heave a little; thought Milone would have more value than that.
   47. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: July 31, 2014 at 11:16 AM (#4761304)
Yea, me too. Royals should have been all over that. I love Jarrod Dyson, but I would have helped him pack to get Milone for him, and Dyson is much better than Fuld.
   48. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: July 31, 2014 at 11:20 AM (#4761306)
On second thought, the Milone for Fuld trade is just awful. Wow, that is a stinker of a deal. How is Billy going to fit Lester/Gomes/Fuld on the roster?

Fuld and Gomes replaces Cespedes and Billy Burns. Hammel (or Chavez) go to the bullpen, Scribner to AAA. Fuld takes over in CF, Gomes is LF while Crisp is out, when Crisp returns its Fuld in LF, Gomes at DH, with Gomes in LF occasionally against LHP.
   51. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: July 31, 2014 at 11:30 AM (#4761318)
So if we just combine their two trades:

Yoenis Cespedes, Tommy Milone, and a 2015 draft pick for Jon Lester, Jonny Gomes, Sam Fuld, and cash.

So the Red Sox are getting 'swarmed' by calls for Andrew Miller, per rotoworld... and want a "top prospect" in return.

Why is there nothing even on the rumor mill regarding James Russell or Wes Wright? I'll grant that Miller has been a tick better than both the last couple years - but JUST a tick and I don't think it would cost a "top prospect" to get Russell or Wright.

Phillies are "offended" at low offers for Marlon Byrd.

Rays have been seen scouting the Tigers farm system.

The Phillies are really gonna make it a third straight trade deadline without trading any of the players they DESPERATELY need to trade, aren't they?
   61. Swedish Chef Posted: July 31, 2014 at 12:30 PM (#4761396)
I imagine it is hard for the Phillies to find willing trading partners. I hear they tried to corner Dayton Moore, but he escaped through the bathroom window.

No, it's not a tick better over that window, and Miller has improved substantially this year. 2014 Andrew Miller is a significantly better pitcher than Russell or Wright. Top prospect worthy? Probably not, but he's really, really good. A 15 K/9 will do that.

Is their pitching really that thin, or are they unsure if and when Wacha will return, or is this insurance against Masterson continuing to suck, or any/all of the above?

Joe Kelly and Allen Craig. I guess technically Craig is "major league ready," but that's not a term that should apply to a major leaguer.

   78. Pleasant Nate (Upgraded from 'Nate') Posted: July 31, 2014 at 12:51 PM (#4761433)
That's a bad deal for the Sox. Craig is owed $26M guaranteed over the next three years, can't stay healthy, isn't a good defensive outfielder, and hasn't hit at all this year. He's also now 30.
   79. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: July 31, 2014 at 12:54 PM (#4761439)
Craig in LF with the Monster could mitigate his deficiencies, no? I mean if you can roll with Jonny Gomes out there, you can probably roll with Allen Craig.

And David Ortiz is going to retire at some point, and there are no long term 1B that I can see.

But Joe Kelly is the prize I would assume.
   80. zonk Posted: July 31, 2014 at 12:56 PM (#4761443)
The Nats should offer Nate McLouth for Marlon Byrn and tell Amaro "Yeah, but Ruben -- despite the shitty slash line, McLouth is on target to log over 200 of those new fangled plate appearance stats everyone's raving about nowadays!"
   81. DKDC Posted: July 31, 2014 at 12:57 PM (#4761445)
Very few prospects trading hands today.

Red Sox clearly think they can compete next year.

But Joe Kelly is the prize I would assume.

Wait, do the Cards have both a pitcher and an OF named Joe Kelly?

EDIT: I'm assuming, having looked at the Lackey trade thread, that I misread this, and that Craig's the OF in question, plus Kelly (the pitcher).

I dunno, that seems like a decent haul for Lackey (though I don't really think much of Craig going forward), no?
   83. cardsfanboy Posted: July 31, 2014 at 12:58 PM (#4761447)
Craig is a solid defensive outfielder. (checks bb-ref to see if the numbers match the eyes.... Yep) Not disagreeing with anything else written, but he's an average right fielder and plays like it, would be better in left because he doesn't have the best arm, but he isn't going to hurt you in the slightest defensively.

Kelly is potential and could grade out to be a solid number three/two starter. He's still rebounding from his injury and is more in line with a guy just getting out of spring training right now as far as sharpness is concerned.
   84. Pleasant Nate (Upgraded from 'Nate') Posted: July 31, 2014 at 01:00 PM (#4761454)
Craig could play 1B after Napoli leaves post-2015, but the thought was to win games in 2015, per the Cespedes deal. And where does Craig play? Does he start over Cespedes, Victorino, Napoli, or Ortiz? Not there. Bench Bradley, leave Mookie in AAA, and move Victorino back to CF so Craig can play LF and have Cespedes in RF? I'd rather the former alignment.

I'm thinking Craig's odds of being a passable first base bat post-2015 (at least, a passable first base bat with more than 400 PAs) are well south of 50/50.

Yeah, I kind of like the Lackey deal. That may put me in the minority, but I don't think Lackey is going to pitch for free next year without some kind of extension.

Craig in front of the Monster doesn't strike me as all that bad of an idea. I also don't think the money is terrible. It is similar to the deal they gave Victorino in that it is short and won't kill a club like the Red Sox even if it doesn't work out.

edit: I'm assuming they are collecting parts that may be moved in a trade this offseason, Craig and Cespedes in the same outfield in Fenway I don't think will happen.

Hm...I was thinking Kelly was better than his track record suggests (probably focusing on his really good second half in the rotation last year). This might not be as good for the Sox as I thought.

Maybe there's a Victorino trade coming that makes this make sense. But even if there is, they've buried one of Bradley/Mookie, and I'm not a fan of that.

I know nothing about Joe Kelly, but there’s not much to like in his stats and he looks like the kind of pitcher who will get killed in the AL East.

Does he have great stuff and maybe is a Jake Arrieta change-of-scenery type?

Or maybe the Sox like him as a reliever?

cfb-any excuses for Craig's bad year so far? Does Kelly throw 96-97? And what was his injury you mentioned in post #83?

The Phillies are really gonna make it a third straight trade deadline without trading any of the players they DESPERATELY need to trade, aren't they?

Second, not third. They sent out Victorino, Blanton, and Pence in 2012, Pence being traded for an actual prospect (who is now a bust).

Also, Cliff Lee will certainly clear waivers tomorrow. They'll be able to trade him if he rebounds at all.

A's aren't done yet. Supposedly looking at adding Kevin Love.

Kelly does have filthy stuff, which would be more exciting if he were 5 years younger.

Royals and Braves are the leaders for Chris Denorfia. But what do they win?

I honestly haven't heard the name "Chris Denorfia" in the sports media in at least five years. Apparently he's played 100 games a season since 2010 for the Padres, the most anonymous organization in sports. Who else is on the Padres? Is Jon Garland still there? Jason Bartlett? Orlando Hudson? How would we know if they were?

The other day he got a hit against the Braves and I thought "damn, he's still in the league?" And now he might be on the Braves. Small world.
