Dempster was getting squeezed a bit/just missing but he has settled down and looks like the "good" Dempster so far. 6 strikeouts through 5 innings. Hopefully he can keep that up all season long. Either that or the weather stays like this all year long.

Vicente Padilla is still around?

In my disgust at the Phillies' putrid offense, I completely missed the fact that, after giving up two singles to open the game, Halladay has held the Pirates' hitters to 0 for 24 with 2 HBP.

So is it too early to say that scoring is way down?

Strasburg just ###### with De Jesus....

So how long have you had that one queued up?

December.

That was a pretty play.

Think Halladay will come back out for the ninth? I'm a little surprised that Verlander is not.
   212. zonk Posted: April 05, 2012 at 03:42 PM (#4098507)
...Just wait till June when he hits his HR.
   213. McCoy Wilfong for Money Posted: April 05, 2012 at 03:44 PM (#4098519)
Dempster is going to be giving the game ball to the wind after this game.

The first homer of the day was hit by Jack Hannahan??

Over/under on people on ESPN or MLB Net dubbing this the "Year of the Pitcher" by this time tomorrow?

McCoy, your Hippo page is submitted but not up yet.

Edit - nevermind, it is posted now.

Strasburg appears to no longer be sucking... or the Cub bats have started/returned to sucking.

The Red Sox use of their 23rd best pitcher in a one-run game in the 8th inning may
a) hurt them
b) not bode well for day 1 of Bobby V
   227. zonk Posted: April 05, 2012 at 03:55 PM (#4098565)
I was a bit mystified as to why Mark DeRosa is starting in LF for the now-suddenly world-beating Nats... then I looked at their roster and discovered the other OFs appear to consist of "Him?" and "Him, really?"
   228. Lassus Posted: April 05, 2012 at 03:57 PM (#4098566)

Two NL games are 1-0 finals and the other in-progress is also 1-0 in the 7th.

   233. Gamingboy Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:00 PM (#4098582)
Tie ballgame. Verlander would have won this game 10 minutes ago.

Does the scorer have any discretion to award the win to Verlander rather than Valverde? I don't think so, but he really should.

Wood.
   245. zonk Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:20 PM (#4098669)
Wood in...

Beaut of a game by Dempster, even with the wind aid -- 10 Ks, 3 BBs, and 2 hits in 7 2/3 is nothing to sneeze at.

Trivia from the Indians-Jays game: Four lefties have started on Opening Day for the Blue Jays. Name them.

Key's gotta be one of them. David Wells. Roy Lee Jackson?

EDIT: Jackson was a righty. (Also, he started all of 4 games for the Jays.) Hmm..
   247. Neutral Milk Dotel (Dan Lee) Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:21 PM (#4098677)
Key is one. Wells, yes. Jackson is not.

Does Romero count?

That Halladay fellow looks quite good.

David Wells?
   252. Neutral Milk Dotel (Dan Lee) Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:23 PM (#4098685)
Romero, Key, Wells, all correct. The other was their Opening Day starter in 1979.
   253. zonk Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:24 PM (#4098687)
Leiter?
   254. zonk Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:25 PM (#4098689)
Not Jim Clancy... was he left-handed?
   255. Neutral Milk Dotel (Dan Lee) Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:25 PM (#4098690)
Leiter's a really good guess - I never even thought of him - but it's not correct.

edit: Clancy was a righty.
   256. Neutral Milk Dotel (Dan Lee) Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:26 PM (#4098693)
Colby Rasmus just made a great catch to rob Hannahan of at least a double.
   257. McCoy Wilfong for Money Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:26 PM (#4098694)
I think the Cubs should have stayed with Dempster.
   258. zonk Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:26 PM (#4098695)
Ahhh... I know it - but I cheated, so I won't spoil it. But I think it's a pretty tough one if you don't BBREF it/aren't in your 40s...
   259. Gern Blanston Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:26 PM (#4098697)
Sirotka never made it to an opening day in one piece while with the Jays, I don't think...

I'm thinking the last two have gotta be nobodies who pitched when the Jays were just starting out, unless I'm missing someone obvious. Flanagan never started an opener for the Jays, I don't reckon...
   260. Gern Blanston Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:27 PM (#4098699)
Leiter would've been one of my guesses if I'd have thought of him. I'm about ready to go look it up.
   261. Davo Mastroianni Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:27 PM (#4098701)
The Marlins are really starting Chris Coghlan over Logan Morrison? In the second game of the season?

   262. Gamingboy Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:28 PM (#4098702)
Hey, Bautista hit a homer. On pace for 162!
   263. JJ1986 Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:28 PM (#4098703)
I thought Werth just struck out.
   264. Gern Blanston Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:29 PM (#4098704)
Ah yeah--I remember that guy, vaguely. Wouldn't have gotten it in a million years, though.
   265. Neutral Milk Dotel (Dan Lee) Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:29 PM (#4098705)
The missing Jays lefty won 13 games for the 1980 Yankees as their third starter. Won 14 games with the '75 Phillies as a 21-year-old rookie. I'm 36 years old - I've heard of him, probably even seen him pitch, but he's not someone of whom I have clear memories.
   266. McCoy Wilfong for Money Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:30 PM (#4098707)
Geezus Christ!!!

Is Wood going to be this year's Latroy Hawkins?
   268. Gern Blanston Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:30 PM (#4098709)
Oh, ####'s sake, Kerru.
   269. zonk Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:30 PM (#4098710)
Helluva a game by Wood.

He wanted to retire as a Cub... can that happen in the next few pitches?
   270. Neutral Milk Dotel (Dan Lee) Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:30 PM (#4098712)
The four Jays lefties to start on Opening Day are Key, Wells, Romero, and this guy.
   271. Gamingboy Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:31 PM (#4098713)

I kind of thought Kerry Wood would only retire once his arm literally fell off on the mound.
   272. Gern Blanston Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:31 PM (#4098715)
And Dempster gets charged with that run. #### that.

Looks like we have two Carlos Marmols now. Thank god we got rid of Sean Marshall.
   277. Stretch Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:33 PM (#4098723)
LaRoache and Werth come through in the only way they can.
   278. zonk Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:35 PM (#4098726)
What we need is a hotheaded, large-boned Venezuelan in the dugout to beat some strikes into Kerry Walks.
   279. Neutral Milk Dotel (Dan Lee) Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:36 PM (#4098729)
Tyler Clippard's gamecast photo makes him look like he should be a member of Weezer or something.

His brother Pat pitched for the Tigers briefly. If memory serves, Pat's first ML start was against Tom and Pat pitched a gem.

   282. McCoy Wilfong for Money Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:38 PM (#4098736)
Politics. Have the government spend hundreds of millions of dollars and through fun accounting turn it into billions of dollars of debt and you get the first game of the season at your park.

Am I misreading the scoreboard? Why are the Marlins playing the Reds after playing the Cardinals for one game?

The had last night's game to give the Marlins' new stadium and the defending champs a spotlight. Now, originally the Marlins/Reds series was then going to start on Friday, but Cincy apparently threw a mild fit about being kicked to FOURTH Opening Day, so...
   284. Yeaarrgghhhh Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:45 PM (#4098746)
But why not just have the Reds play the Marlins on Wed. night? And why did the A's and Mariners play two official games in Japan and then come back and play more exhibition games? The scheduling is bizarre.

$$$ And the Reds couldn't play the Marlins on Wed. Night because then they wouldn't have been home. And Cincy always needs to have their season opener be at home. It's been that way basically every year since 1880 or something (with one or two exceptions).

In other words, just one of those quirky things about baseball where modern economics and ancient traditions have weird babies.
   286. Yeaarrgghhhh Posted: April 05, 2012 at 04:48 PM (#4098751)
I'm normally not that much of a traditionalist, but to me opening day should be on Monday.

What they should have done was just switch some stuff around. Like, why not have the Reds open up against, I dunno, the Astros or something. Then they could have had the day off for the Marlins.

Brad Lidge does not have the fastball to beat good lefties. He looks like a roogy miscast as a closer.
