With 2 HRs last night, Gary Sanchez now has 45 HRs in 144 games since being called up last August. The record for HRs in a season while playing predominantly at catcher is 45 by Johnny Bench in 158 games in 1970, a mark Sanchez may soon challenge if he can approximate his current pace over an injury-free season.

HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

Hard to say. I have never heard of their starting pitcher so the forecast is full of mystery.

Rangers' starter Andrew Cashner, quite good in the first few innings this year, predictably disintegrates the third time through the order. Hang on for this transformation.

Heaney's a top prospect who went through TJS and is making his way back. Rough first outing. There's no chance the Angels hit Cashner, though.

Zimmermann is 3-0 1.33 in 4 career starts vs. Yankees. Bet that won't last.

Oh, another dinger by Sanchez..............
   11. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 23, 2017 at 07:17 PM (#5519773)
1st inning solo HR by Gary Sanchez, #26. That's 46 HRs in 145 games since being called up last August.
   12. LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 23, 2017 at 07:21 PM (#5519776)
Zimmermann's been so bad this season, it's almost hilarious. That last start against the Yankees was greatest aberration in history, and that's not gonna happen twice.
   13. Tim D Posted: August 23, 2017 at 07:24 PM (#5519778)
Yeah, Zimmermann is pretty much throwing BP. Only three more years and $66M left on his deal.

[8] If it makes you feel any better, Howie Kendrick kind of sucked for the Dodgers, too, so meh.

No mystery. Rajai Davis.
   16. Random Transaction Generator Posted: August 23, 2017 at 07:43 PM (#5519788)
Red Sox get Rajai Davis, but had to wait to announce it because Davis was the only player left on the bench during extra innings.

2-run single by "Mr. August" gives Yankees 3-0 lead over Tigers.

EDIT: For his career, Sanchez is .354/.422./793 in August, before tonight's game.

Man, watching Corey Kluber pitch is so much fun right now. He has a fun nonchalance to him while he knows down the best hitters on the planet.

Hard to believe he was considered a fringe prospect/starter before he broke through.

Didi Gregorius' 19th HR of the year puts Yankees ahead 7-0. Remember, he missed the first month of the season, too.

How do you feel about that FA signing now?
   29. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 23, 2017 at 08:53 PM (#5519827)
There seem to be an inordinate number of advertisements for plaintiffs personal-injury attorneys on the Tigers broadcast (carried by MLB Extra Innings™ tonight).
   30. Chip Posted: August 23, 2017 at 08:59 PM (#5519832)
Pomerantz, coming off a bout of back spasms and over 100 pitches through 5.3, gets removed in the 6th by Farrell. Dave O'Brien ignores the recent history and says, "well this is a bit curious." Then comes back from commercial and doubles down on his incredulity.
   31. villageidiom Posted: August 23, 2017 at 09:00 PM (#5519833)
And now Pomeranz is out, even though he's still pitching well. Boston bullpen gets 3.2 IP of work. I hope the extra rest from yesterday does them some good.

A bit of a gift there after not giving him a couple of borderline pitches.

Pretty terrible called strike three on the 3-2 pitch to Rodriguez there, and the perfect game stays intact through eight.

Not sure if it's bad data entry or North Korean saboteurs, but they have just about everything wrong, including the score. You'd think they'd be alert enough to quickly fix such mistakes, but . . .
   46. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: August 23, 2017 at 09:23 PM (#5519857)
So if Hill stays perfect through 9, will the Dodgers let him pitch the 10th? He's only thrown 87 pitches so far, so I'd guess they would.

Dammit, I was just about to say he won't make it through, but the Pirates beat me to it. Or I should say Forsythe beat me to it.

Padres crew shows a graphic comparing the career numbers of Yadier Molina and Ted Simmons, and the graphic shows Molina with a .285 avg, which seems right, but Simmons with a .262 average, which seems at least 20 points too low. A knowledgeable baseball announcer should notice that immediately.

EDIT: Simmons's career avg is .285, same as Molina's. His career average during his 5-year stint as a Milwaukee Brewer was .262, so I guess some flunkie made a booboo. UNACCEPTABLE.

The sad thing is that the Dodgers would have gotten a run if Hill had gotten a bunt down earlier (assuming Seager still gets the single when he did). 0-9 w/RISP and 11 LOB. They had a ton of chances but this was the least clutch game they had all year.
   95. Heart of Matt Harvey Posted: August 23, 2017 at 10:17 PM (#5519954)
I'm still stunned by that game. Again, Hill tied the mark for second-best game score for nine innings... while the juggernaut offense* wenr 0-for-9 with RISP.

No Bellinger, Turner, or Grandal tonight -- the Dodgers are a 90-win team, at best, without them.

Mike Trout's just 3-17 with 4 walks in the last three games and tonight. He's visibly frustrated — he's had several PAs the last few games just shaking his head in annoyance at umpires. I know that's not a very long stretch, but he's so consistently good, it's strange to see him have even two bad games in a row.
