HOW WILL SHIN-SOO CHOO REACH BASE TODAY? He's on a 40-game streak -- 336/468/572.

The way their season is going, I shudder to think what this could be.

Mauer's 3 run home was wind aided, only fair that so was Russell's grand slam.

First AB away from DH and back in CF, Trout homers. Never DH him again.

Steve Pearce, 3.000 OPS with the Red Sox. Good trade.

cries of "BINGO!" heard all over the East Coast as Pearce completes his tour of the AL East with his Red Sox debut.

Well this is going to be fun, if mister HEADump keeps on going likes this.
I hope they tell him during replay review from New York that he sucks and that he should call better.
Quick review challenge please.

Difference between Yanks and Red Sox offense:

Yanks' big boppers have more holes in their swings.

Red Sox have more holes in their lineup.

Love ya, Javy, but swinging at a pitch that bounces in front of the opposite batter's box isn't a good look.
   24. Jay Seaver Posted: June 29, 2018 at 08:01 PM (#5702436)
Pearce's OPS with the Sox down to 2500. Ugh.

#22. That's a great point. Yankees great hitters are easier to pitch to than the Red Sox great hitters, but the Yankees have a deeper lineup, especially when Sanchez is healthy.

And I'm leaving Torres out of the great hitter convo only because he's 21, but in time I believe he'll be the toughest out on the team.

Joe, I know there are two outs in the 9th and you have a 5-run lead, but I won't call managering on a pitching change here, I promise. It's the Justin Wilson Exemption. (Rule 7(b)(3)(ii): Removing Justin Wilson from the game under any circumstances shall never constitute managering.)

Mookie's now got 42 ribbies. Just imagine how many he'd have if he were following the bottom of that Yankees lineup.

Man, Molina is a fine player but Posada fell off the ballot after one year. I know Molina was a much better defensive player than Posada, but Posada was twice the hitter Yadier is.

   47. perros Posted: June 29, 2018 at 08:51 PM (#5702463)
I hadn't noticed the Angels stinking it up lately. A's blew right past them for third place.
   48. cardsfanboy Posted: June 29, 2018 at 08:51 PM (#5702464)
Cardinal announcers are looking at Jose Martinez superficially compared to Freddie Freeman
Freddie has an average of .318, Jose .305
Freddie 15 hr, Jose 12.
Freddie 54 rbi, Jose 51 rbi...

and then saying "Freddie is running away with the all star voting, and deservedly so, but Jose isn't that far behind him.."

while ignoring ops .956 vs .875, ops+ 161(league leading) vs 137... rfield + 2 vs -6. which of course figures into their 3.2 war vs 1.0 war difference. I'm a Jose Martinez fan, and I think he's at the bottom swing of his ability right now(meaning that his numbers represent what I think his low performance swing is and argue that players have fluctuations which I know is obvious to anyone who has observed baseball ever) but still he's not Freddie Freeman, I don't think he would be a poor choice for the all star game, just saying he's not really in the discussion of "alsos" when talking about starters.

He'll absolutely be a HOFer. So will Omar vizquel.

I fully get that argument, but it doesn't track at all with the voters who have made comments on the issue. Considering that Posada and Yadier are effectively the same player by war currently, and Posada doesn't have the reputation of being a leader that Yadier does(meaning unsung value that isn't currently incorporated in the stats....and there would be nobody on this planet surprised if a peer reviewed war system that incorporated pitch framing and pitch calling into it's metric gives Yadier another 10+ war or more over someone like Posada) and then add in the in season durability which means less playing time for a pretty crappy backup catcher, and it really does seem possible that the voters will give Yadier a bit more credit than they gave Posada. (and note, I'm a huge Ted Simmons fan and think that the offense first catcher got ripped off by the voters)
   51. cardsfanboy Posted: June 29, 2018 at 09:03 PM (#5702467)

I wouldn't go with absolutes...not with either. But I think Yadier has a stronger case than Omar, simply because Yadier is widely acknowledge to at least be equal if not better defensively than Bench and Irod, but for the most part Omar is acknowledged to be just a tad below Ozzie(with a few notable exceptions) Meaning that Omar doesn't have the best ever defensively at his position argument.

If I had to bet, I would bet that neither makes it, but I think that Yadier will do better on the ballot.

I don't like the Yankees that much, but you have to like Sabathia. And he's adding to his potential hof resume, and yes it's still a very real thing with him.
   55. cardsfanboy Posted: June 29, 2018 at 09:16 PM (#5702472)
Looking at bb-ref, how in the hell does Sabathia have only a .1 waa with 76ip, and an era+ of 132?

Putting up a 70 Game Score in a white hot division race sure doesn't hurt his chances.

OTOH the early bird line for tomorrow should be something like 7-8 or 8-9 Sale over Gray.

Looks like the Angels finally someone their own size to pick on, after finishing their season series with Boston/NYY at 1 and 11.

Damnit, what are they doing to my fantasy team today? (yes I have a fantasy team that is entirely based upon the best Mets players.... yea... I'm not doing so good in that league even though I was able to add Trout to that team, but my other team, the Mariners with a few additions is doing pretty good...best record in the league, but it's tight, and the categories are idiotic to be honest)

entering tonight, Reds RP Michael Lorenzen had a career MLB OPS+ of 88 in 63 PA. tonight, he homered in his 1st AB - his 4th HR in 64 PA, which is what sluggers do (picture 40 HR in 640 PA). also that is his 2nd in 6 PA this season.

bottom 8, tying run at the plate, Lorenzen due up - and they pinch-hit 2018 OPS+ of 83 Duvall for him (who whiffs). huh
   69. cardsfanboy Posted: June 29, 2018 at 10:02 PM (#5702495)
It was a little bit funny, the other day, Matt Carpenter was on first base to lead off the inning and Greg Garcia bunted, and every saber friendly fan of the Cardinals, and every Matheny hater made a big deal about how dumb of a play it was... The funny thing was that I was actually reading a digital copy of "The Book" by Tango and MGL and I was actually on the chapter of the sacrifice bunt at the time, and they specifically talked about that situation and their conclusion was that you if you do it once in a while, it's not a bad thing. Arguably they pushed that if it's a speedy bat, but it boiled down to that the sacrifice in that situation is not a wrong move, provided you do it rarely enough that the defense isn't prepared for it.

Some Cardinal fans on here pointed out that the Cardinals are in the top five in sacrifices this year with 22... of course the real story is that the Cardinals have had 7 sacrifices with non-pitchers this year. So it's not really an issue, but the Matheny haters will try and grasp on anything to justify their own idiocy.
   70. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 29, 2018 at 10:44 PM (#5702505)
Nationals Terrific Teenager Juan Soto has 4 hits tonight, including 2 HRs. Now at .336/.446/.621 in 116 ABs. Might have to find some All-Star roster room for him.

Lorenzen doesn't hit any doubles to keep rallies alive, and he doesn't walk. Just homers a lot.
With a homer in 5 PA in 2016, one in 12 PA in 2017, and now 2 in 6 PA - maybe look for an excuse to get him more PA.
