Kansas City Royals sign OF Willy Taveras

Out of the Majors since 2010, Willy Taveras has agreed to a Minor League deal with the Royals that includes an invite to Major League camp, a baseball source said Tuesday.

Taveras turns 31 on Christmas Day and has a career .320 on-base percentage with 195 steals.

The Royals need someone as insurance in case Frenchy doesn’t work out.

Meh. Spring training invites are nothing to get worked up about (if Taveras hits, good. If not, BUH-bye).

When you can get proven vet Willy Taveras, unproven AAAA player Wil Myers is surplus.

I think that Taveras will literally replace Myers, in that he'll play CF in Omaha. Someone has to. Yem Prades hit 269/288/390 in AA and the other CFs in the high minors are vets, organizational soldiers, and other assorted non-entities. The pitchers in AAA will appreciate having a competent flycatcher out there.

Where did he play last year? B-R doesn't even show him playing in the minors. Was he with some independent league team?

wonder if he can still run/steal bases. last i looked, he was terrible vs leftys. he also has close to zero strike zone judgement.

hard to believe he came up in 05. it seems like a lifetime ago

He was out of baseball completely in 2012.

So much for the "Dayton Moore sacrificing the future in a misguided attempt to save his job" meme. He's now proven he's completely willing to make moves that have no chance of helping the Royals in 2013.

Doesn't he already have Jarrod Dyson? What does he need the older model for?

Guys like this tend to be pretty useful for a bit, but they have this dangerous tendency to start to cost a lot more money right when their effectiveness starts to crater.

Hey, as NRIs go, I've seen worse. Good for Willy.

Hey, as NRIs go, I've seen worse.

You saw the 2012 Blue Jays bench?

Good for Willy.

I agree. As far as emergency CF options stashed at AAA go, he's a perfectly acceptable one.

Not quite. He's playing in the Mexican Pacific League right now.
