Kapler: 75% of the time, line-drive percentage works 100% of the time

And apparently 67% of the time, you’ll get hurt and look like making you that rich was a mistake…

I’m dubbing Nick Castellanos Kid Linea.

“Linea” is Spanish for line. More relevantly, it’s how you’ll hear line drives described in the dugout vernacular. Unless you’re facing Kershaw, an inning won’t pass on the bench without someone uttering, “That was an f’ing linea.”...

“A line drive won’t necessarily be the hardest balls in play, but they do end up being hits at a lofty 75% clip,” according to

In short, line-drive percentage matters. Kid Linea leads the American League as a rookie at 27.3 percent. Of course, this is a small sample size. Those players who have put up top numbers year after year have been amply rewarded by their teams. Since 2010, MLB’s three leaders in line-drive percentage are Freddie Freeman, Joey Votto and Joe Mauer. Those guys are really, really rich.

Be a bit careful when comparing over time. It seems there's been a change in how these things are coded. ML LD%

2010 19%
2011 18%
2012 19%
2013 23%
2014 24%

You don't see changes that big they they're real. Also, BA and # of HR on LD:

2010 722 415
2011 723 417
2012 718 428
2013 674 981
2014 663 1008

In 2012 there were 24,769 PAs classified as LD, in 2013 that was 30,452 (a near 25% increase in one year ... not likely). If you add together FBs and LDs, you get reasonably stable numbers over this time frame. It seems they've shifted coding some fliners from FB to LD.

That said, comparing/ranking within a season is probably reasonably stable -- i.e. the guy rated as the top LD hitter by the 2012 definition would probably still be #1 (or at least similarly ranked) using the 2013 definition. Just don't read anything into a player's BA on LD dropping over this period.
